McCartney promising a "refreshed" version of 2016'

He is not going to do Little Willow as a substitute for MIA for Linda. That song was written for Maureen Starkey. If he could sing it well, I'd rather hear Calico Skies.
________________________________________________________ Nancy, I also love Calico Skies so that choice would certainly be a good one as a tribute to Linda. Paul of course has had Calico Skies in the setlist previously but it has been quite a few years so bringing it back would at least refresh the setlist. My initial vote for Little Willow was mostly because it is a great meaningful song and Paul has never done it live. Just because it was written for Maureen Starkey doesn't mean that the sentiment of Little Willow doesn't apply to Linda and their children as well. Frankly I would like both songs in the setlist if Paul can still sing them pretty well.

It'd be a great transition into Here Today, which unlike many board members, while overplayed, is an essential concert moment for first timers especially (and I personally still enjoy it).
Yeah he'll never ditch here today, means too much to him. At least it's a solo songs guys! He cried singing it in Liverpool on the last tour
_______________________________________________________ Speaking of "essential concert moments" (or songs), I totally understand why certain songs should and have to remain in the Setlist. They are signature songs that the overwhelming percentage of first timers definitely want to hear. These songs would never keep me from wanting to attend his Show. As a big time Macca fan, I have no problems with why they need to remain. My Suggested List below is the kind of TRUE REFRESHMENT that I would love to see. I based this proposed setlist on what Paul performed at the 3 Tokyo 2017 shows Here would be my list of essential concert songs that should stay: Beatles songs Hey Jude Yesterday Let It Be Blackbird Eleanor Rigby Lady Madonna (while he doesn't have to do it, he loves to play it and everyone knows it) Back in the USSR (similar to above, it fits in so well with the 2nd half sequence) Ob La Di (again fits so well to the rockers/up tempo sequence in the 2nd half) Golden Slumbers (a great closer to the concert) *Love Me Do - good addition primarily because of the state of Paul's voice, easy to sing and the crowd easily joins in * Hard Days Night - great opener and the band really helps in the overall vocal Wings/Solo songs Band on the Run - true signature song and fits so well with the rocking 2nd half sequence) Live and Let Die - gives the concert so much excitement especially for 1st timers 1985 - great (not too overplayed) uptempo Wings song that should stay Maybe I'm Amazed- definitely a signature song but see my notes below Tribute songs Here Today - should stay since the lyrics are so good and Paul still sings it ok Something - should stay since it is for George and Paul/band sing it well Beatle Songs for Paul to rotate between shows Can't Buy Me Love I Saw Her Standing There All My Loving I've Just Seen A Face And I Love Her We Can Work it Out Get Back Fool on the Hill Birthday If I split the "rotation" songs just above in half, that gives a total of 21 Essential songs. The rest of the 15 song or so is where (in my opinion) Paul should try to do songs that he has never done before, rarely done or songs that he hasn't done in a long time. They could be split among Beatle songs, wings and especially Solo songs that he has ignored the most as a whole. The other factor to consider is his current 75 year old voice. He needs to have some songs that are so well know that the band and especially the crowd can easily join in. Certainly that gives plenty of Beatle songs for the 1st timers. **Songs that should "Go" either because he has difficulty singing them or they are non essential songs that he has sung enough by now Maybe I'm Amazed - the only song from the "essential list" above that should go because Paul simply can't sing it anymore. Hate to say this but it just makes him look bad. 4-5 Seconds - not only because it is not an "essential" song, but Paul can't sing it now I've Got a Feeling - not an essential Beatle song and Paul really struggles to sing it New (the song) - not essential and Paul needs to switch it out for another Solo song Queenie Eye - same as above My Valentine - same as above Mr. Kite - again not essential and Paul can bring in "new to the setlist) Sgt. Pepper era songs (see below) I Wanna be your Man - definitely not essential and Paul has far better Beatle songs to add (see below) **Songs that Paul should "ADD" for this upcoming US leg When I'm 64 - not only to celebrate the 50th Anniversary but because (like Love Me Do) it is easy to sing and everyone knows it and will join in. Could be a real nice part of the show Penny Lane - it is a monster signature song that Paul should bring back. It is even included in the Sgt Pepper reissue (2nd Disc) so it is part of the Sgt. Pepper era My Brave Face - A solo song that begs to be played again and he just did the reissue Little Wilow - a replacement to Linda for Maybe I'm Amazed Put It There - an easy song for Paul and Band to play and would be another Solo song Here There and Everywhere - another monster Signature song that Paul should bring back I Will - like above, a monster signature Paul song that he hasn't overplayed For No One - same as above. I'm sure there is another song or two that could be great additions and something Paul can still sing decently (maybe a song to replace My Valentine for Nancy). Anyway, these are the kind of changes that would want me to attend one of the upcoming US shows in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, I don't see these kinds of changes happening but I'll keep my fingers crossed
Why not do Beatle Song "And I Love Her" for Nancy. Lyrics fit and the crowd would love it. I would like "Little Willow" (written in memory of Maureen Starkey) and think it would fit in nicely with acoustic numbers.
_______________________________________________________ Good choice Yankeefan... "And I Love Her" would be a great choice to sing for Nancy. Again, another great Beatle song that hasn't been overdone. I had mentioned before that Paul really neglected Tug of War and Flaming Pie (except for a couple of songs from each album) in his setlist over the years. Little Willow might be one of the songs he could still sing well so it would be a very welcome addition to me.

In all the pepper hype and everything I've been listening to out of the box (and finishing up the PBS special right now)...I desperately want "Penny Lane" live. I've seen this man twelve times...I deserve to hear one of his most gargantuan Beatle songs!
Its special live thats for sure.

He's been doing it since 2009. I first saw him in 2009, before 2013 he did And I Love Her on alternate nights. It's just that every time I saw him before 2013, it happened to be on the nights he did it

____________________________________________________________ "And I Love Her" to me can certainly be considered a "signature" song. I say it because all the crowd has to hear is the first couple of guitar notes and they know immediately what the song is. That being said, I would have no problem with him switching out the song for Here There and Everywhere, I Will or For No One...songs that he hasn't sung as much. All 4 songs are "signature" songs in my opinion. My main point is I want to see a "real" refreshment to the One on One basic setlist. I'm not talking about replacing 20 songs but give us 4 - 6 songs that are real "new" additions. For example, if he added Penny Lane, When I'm 64, My Brave Face, Put it There, Little Willow, Calico Skies and I'm there in Tampa (or NY for that matter in September). Except for When I'm 64 and Little Willow, he has done them before but it has been such a long time. I'm also assuming that with the help from his Band, he can sing all those types of songs fairly well. These are the kind of additions to "One on One' that would truly revitalize the setlist and bring a hardcore fan like me to these shows. I have a feeling that what we might get is a couple of Sg. Pepper additions/changes and that will be it. I'm happy for the first timers because it will be "for them" a great show. For someone like me who has been to many shows, I expect more from Macca for the prices he is charging.

Just realised 'Coming Up' hasn't been played on tour in 14+ years. And only 4 times since a all, on promo tours, plus once as big surprise during a stadium gig in 2011. And this is supposedly one of his absolute favourites, probably as always because there are good instead of bad memories attached to a solo song: Lennon loved it and it was the final creative compliment he made to McCartney in his lifetime. Would love to hear it, he can easily shout his way through that one still, if he doesn't try to go to switch between his shout-voice and falsetto in the chorus like the one-off version from 2013 (
.) Also, this got me thinking: I saw the big resurrection of Liam Gallagher on stage last week. One of the biggest and most distinctive vocalists of all time, he's 40+ now and realises his vocal capabilities will never return to the angelic sounds from his early 20's: all "new old" songs he finally brought back after 10-20 years were at least one step down. McCartney could so easily do this for a lot of songs, and he's 30 years older. -

He plays it often at soundcheck, so it could easily be added to the set should he want it there.

I know! That's why it's weird that it never gets an outing any more, one would've expected it at the fixed "early set rocker" spot by now again.

Like I have said previously, he would have to do at least 6-8 different songs for me to buy a ticket to see him again. That would be easier if his new album is ready and he can do 3-4 from it. I would enjoy a couple from FITD and please Lord give me two solo songs he has never played live before like "Take It Away", "Little Willow", "That Was Me", "I Can Bet, "Dance Til We're High" or "Promise To You Girl".

Very accurate assessments...I can't say I'd be crazy about "When I'm Sixty Four" he's got enough of the novelty types in the show now as it is. "And I Love Her" and "1985" are definitely overplayed now. I was beyond ecstatic when they were put back in for us in the states on the 2010 "Up and Coming" tour, but I have heard both of them every single year since (with the exception of AILH missing in 2011 for me). As always, I know most folks don't go multiple times a year, or even every year, so I shouldn't be complaining. But, take the market of Philadelphia: they have heard both of those songs in 2010, 2015, and 2016 on three separate tours and they aren't mainstay type songs. He's got plenty of songs in both of those styles that could replace them too. "And I Love Her" could easily be replaced with "P.S. I Love You", "Michelle", or an acoustic "Here, There, and Everywhere" (instead of the piano ballad version, even though I LOVED it!!!)...as for 1985, he could do "C Moon" or "Let Em In" again...or if he were feeling adventurous, how about an 2017 piano pop/rock version of "She's My Baby"? I always felt that tune would've been bigger with a better arrangement and production.

_________________________________________________________ WixRocks, I love your posts but we will have to agree to disagree about "When I'm 64". To me, "64" is far more than a novelty song. Now Temporary Secretary is a novelty song that nobody knows. I know the story...Paul heard that some "hip" club in London was playing it and that's why he added it to the set. That's fine but in my opinion it is another song that he has played enough and needs to be dropped. Again, not even close to an essential concert song and almost all the first timers on the upcoming US leg don't know it. When I'm 64 has become one of Paul's (and the Beatles for that matter) most famous songs although it was never a single. Furthermore, it has become beyond "cult status" because it gets sung by millions when someone in the family turns 64. It is the "new" birthday song for "Boomers" and boomers are a large part of Paul's concert attendees. They even have a 64th birthday doll with the song that is sold in countless stores (including Hallmark). I have a cousin who is not even a Beatles fan buy the doll for her husband's 64th birthday. People in our family are still singing the song! I've heard it in American movies and even John Lennon who would often criticize some of Paul's granny songs loved it. The Beatles would play it in the early years even though the words had not been flushed out yet. The melody again just shows Paul's genius...love the way the music just changes direction. The other factor is that I believe Paul needs another song like "Love Me Do" that can help save his voice where the crowd just takes over. Last but not least, he has NEVER DONE IT LIVE and it is a Sgt. Pepper 50th Anniversary song. I kind of agree with you about 1985 although I still love the song. But please no more C-Moon or Let Em In. Why doesn't he do something from Back to the Egg like Getting Closer or Arrow Through Me. Getting Closer was a minor hit and is actually getting airplay on Sirius with both their 70's Channel and their new Beatles' station. Again, Paul just baffles me with his setlist over the last 5 years. He even ignores really good Wings' songs that he has rarely played yet alone his Solo Catalog.

____________________________________________________ Nancy has a great point about Silly Love Songs. Always liked it and I love the fact that Paul kind of wrote it to get back to some of critics who said that Macca just wrote "silly love songs". I would think that maybe Paul never brought it back into the setlist once Linda passed away. Her harmonies were a big part of the song. But it got me thinking that a shortened version would be an excellent substitute for MIA as a tribute song to Linda. I always thought that Silly Love Songs ran a little too long (and dragged a little bit in the 2nd half) even when it was a hit record. For a concert song, I think it would go down very well staying with the uptempo part and keeping it to around 3 minutes. It would/could be a great tribute song for Linda that everyone in the audience would know and sing along to. It again like Love Me Do would save on Paul's voice during an almost 3 hour show.
-
Don't get me wrong, When I'm Sixty-Four is classic!...but in an arena rock concert? A tin-pan alley tune that is outfitted by a clarinet ensemble? I just don't see it. AS for C Moon & Let Em In...I was picking a replacement that was a Wings song and an uptempo piano number. Can you think of any others? "You Gave Me The Answer" is kind of in the same category as 64...
