Paul McCartney has officially become an oldies act.

Trotting out the same old chestnuts everywhere...but they're very special beloved chestnuts, but seems like the audience would get even more of a huge thrill from more novel less familiar less often performed treasures...some would (many would) but some mainly want to hear "the biggies"--is that what the majority wants, it must be or it wouldnt be happening so often. The more adventurous & musically knowlegable would love to hear more of something different, I'd be in that group. Macca loves most all his songs so that's why he doesnt mind performing the same ones so often, that must be part of it, too.

I like to see more from "Band on the Run" Helen Wheels(US version I think)JET,Mrs Vandebilt and 1985 is a verymuch underrated Paul song, absolutely love that one. Magneto/Titanium man will get things going.
-
Well as I posted, if McCartney just keeps dragging out the same basic songs, the same basic setlist, his live performance legacy will be a big dissapointment to me! So many missed opportunities to really do something special on stage!
-
Anything he performs will sound very, very good. Seems like audiences would be thrilled with anything he wants to sing, anything at all. Why not?

I just want to say that I personally will go see Sir Paul and enjoy every minute of it no matter what he sings! With John and George gone, we only have Ringo & Paul left to give us joy. Ringo has his All-Starr Band, and Paul will always be the gifted, talented, effervescent, glowing star that is PAUL McCARTNEY!!! Let's thrill to the beauty that he has given us, and wait expectantly for the jewels yet to come---and STOP BICKERING!!! OK---maybe he could rock a little harder or play all 3,000+ songs he has in his attic just for all the nit-pickers and stroppy-ass gripers out there! But let us not DENY the joy & beauty of the songs he gives us, and ponder the fact that this is a 65-year-old man up there busting his tail EVERY NIGHT for TWO effing HOURS while singing in that ageless angel's voice!!!

Your point of view is not relevant here. The reason : you seem to accept everything which comes from Paul, so You don't use your judgment ability (assuming you have one...). This thread is for people who although there love and appreciate Paul music, they allow themselves to think, to judge, to make comments, to "bicker", to think what could be better, to think that Paul could present himself better live, we're the true fans, active ones with minds of our own, not passive who'll take anything and say "Yes, sir Paul...Thanks Paul, we like everything that you say, sing, and do, after all, you're the king, Sir Paul mccartney". I think we're better fans also for Paul because he needs to try hard to please us, he needs to get to the next level, to improve himself, while fans like you everything which will come from Paul, you'll be pleased with, because it came from the glowing star ! If you don't want to judge, to think, you don't see any problem with anything that Paul does (you know, even Paul isn't perfect) so don't, but don't dictate other people what to think and how to express their ideas and thoughts. At least people here gave reasons, explained themselves, what reasons did you give for Paul maintaining the same set list and ignoring the last 30 years of his creativity, that Ringo and Paul is all that's left to this world, and we should be thankful for whatever comes out of their mouth ? Doesn't make any sense for me. B.T.W - Paul is already 66 for almost three months, and we don't have only Paul and Ringo left, there is a lot great musician around, we can enjoy them all.
-
If for nothing else, the setlist could change for Paul and the bands sake.I'm sure they would love to play a lot of different songs rather than the 5oth version of Band On The Run.Just look at the reaction to Mrs Vandebilt from the band, they look overjoyed to be playing something fresh, and so does Paul. Another thing is real fans try and have some objectivity towards their favourite artist rather than blindly agreeing with everything they do.I love Paul as much as anyone and have done for 35 years, but he hasn't rested on his laurels as a recording artist so why do it as alive act?

Its interesting that two consistant themes have emerged from these forums this past year or so 1) the crap ('loudness wars') mastering of 'Memories Almost Full' which ruined the album for many (myself included), and 2) Concert goers getting fed up with hearing the same old songs being performed. Lets hope that word is getting back to Paul and that he does something about it in future.
-
Kestrel amen to that. The loudness wars don't affect me at all, nothing could ruin the brilliance of Memory Almost Full for me, it's just masterful McCartney! You already know how I feel about McCartney's setlist, and you're right, I seriously hope someone, anyone gets to McCartney and let's him know that it's way way way past time for a change!
-
Paul hasn't toured since 2005 so how can anyone say he is playing the same old songs? It's been 3 years since we have had a major tour.

The French Canadian interviewer asked Paul in the video, "You're going to perform the hits aren't You?" & Paul replied, "Hits, yeah" or words to that effect. The implication was they think the audience likes to hear a lot of big hits. The biggest ones everybody knows so well, for some reason many or most in concert crowds long to hear the familiar monster hits performed live. The overwhelming majority of the audience have not seen him perform live in concert before. That seems to be the reasoning behind it. You're right, he could still sprinkle in lots of other songs, less often or never performed tunes, which would be (seems like) a huge treat for everyone, real crowd pleasers also. Nothing he does is going to sound less than fantastic. He's that talented. Also the band. The fan you criticized for not being "discerning" for loving everything Macca was wrongfully disparaged. Many fans are like that, overwhelmingly loving of their fave star & enthusiastic & pleased with everything they come out with. Such admirers have a greater capacity to love & appreciate...their hearts are bigger, their natural warmth is deeper. Or they just simply love music so much, especially their favorite's music...it was surprising to see that disparaged. Some fans go whole hog & are 100 percent devoted and approving. T hey're still Beatlemania type fans, that much into it, no matter how old they've grown. By B eatlemania I mean that highest level of devotion and approval, not necessarily of the Beatles. Paul has more than earned that highest level of "fan love" all by himself & for himself over the years. It's "Maccamania'-- we love him (yes yes yes!) & you know that can't be bad--!!
-
There are obviously thousands of people out there that love what Paul does. He wouldn't fill the concerts otherwise. I have been lucky enough to see him 3 times and he varied the set list each time. Yes of course he played 'Beatle' songs, why shouldn't he......they are his songs, but also played 'Wings' and his solo's too. If he tours again i will be there again, to see the greatest singer, musician, songwriter we have, while i have the opportunity. Whatever the set list is.
-
Hi, I think everybody's happy that Paul is still playing concerts. And yes, he plays Wings tunes too. But the problem is, that his (solo-)back-catalogue is so huge that it's a shame he reduces it in concerts to such a small amount. I've seen Paul ten times live, and I don't plan to stop going to his concerts, but after the third or fourth concert it got too predictable for me. Isn't it a pity, isn't it a shame?
-
When Paul says he likes to play the "Hits" it is quite a broad church.A lot of the Beatle songs he plays were not hit singles, there are plenty of Wings and early solo songs that were. I do think you can be a devoted fan and not blinkered, even Paul himself has criticized some of his own music as sloppy and unfinished.Normally Suzy and i are on the same page when it comes to Paul's music, but on this occasion i think she's wrong, blinding love is hazardous to your health, sorry Suze.

Hi to all of you. This discussion is a matter of a point of view. There are a lot of people who don't know Paul's solo career as most of the fans here, and they don't go to Paul's concert everytime he perfomes. For them, the hits list is a wonderful songs list. For some of the fans as some of you have mentioned it's not enough because you have already heard it many times and saw him perfomes more than one time. It is very difficult to satisfy everyone in a concert, and each side thinks his opinion is more important and I remind you that everyone has a different taste of music/songs that he likes. In this case Paul needs to choose songs from a very huge list. So any solution of a songs list won't satisfy all of the audience. I'm glad that Paul still performes and I don't see any problem with his songs list. If I want to know someone solo career, I wouldn't have learnt it through a one concert. I probably would have learnt it through buying his albums/cds first. So you can turn the coin how many times you want. it still has another side

I understand why Paul plays his current setlist in locales he doesn't visit very often,if at all,but across the usual territories he can vary it quite a lot.I think fans are not looking for him to play obscurities but a wider variety of his well know music. The last time i saw Paul was in 2004 in Portugal, and he changed quite a bit of his set compared to the year before in London,so he can do it.

Predictable or not, I will go see him anyway. Interesting too that the only songs he's done at every concert I've seen on four tours, are Band On The Run, Jet, Let Me Roll It, Live and Let Die, My Love, Maybe I'm Amazed, Yesterday, Lady Madonna, and The Long and Winding Road. 5 of the 9 are Wings songs, and one solo. Complainers take note.

What in the world do you mean complainers take note, there's absolutely nothing to take note of! Paul McCartney has #1 hits, #1 hits that he's never performed live! There's absolutely no excuse for that! Name any songs you want that he's performed live and there are still #1 hits that he hasn't performed! As I said before, no ones asking McCartney to step on stage and play some deep obscure album track, we're asking for the good stuff, Wings best material, songs that were hits for them all over the world, I'll post that again, all over the world! Wings were huge in the 70s, some of you continue to make it sound like people don't know this music? Paul McCartney was a major hit maker in the 70s, this music is very well known, Wings had #1 albums you know! If McCartney hit the stage with Silly Love Songs, there's absolutely no way you're going to tell me the crowds wouldn't know it! Juniors Farm was #3 here in America, #3 that's a freaking hit, and he's never ever performed it here? people know this music and Paul McCartney should be performing it!

Its like 'Waterfalls'......or 'Footprints'......or 'Distractions'.......three beautiful ballads which are amongst the finest songs Paul has ever composed,.... and how many times has he performed them live? Put it this way,I'm not going to have to reach for my calculator to work that one out.
