PAUL SOLO/POST BEATLES' ANTHOLOGY
-
Hey guys and gals. I've pretty much exhausted my comments and lists for a "New"Post Beatles and Solo" Compilation Package for Paul. My Lists are on the previous pages of this Thread. For this Package, I'm talking about a Possible Release Date in June of 2022 or even the Christmas Season of 2022. Paul will be 80 years old by then and in my opinion he needs this for his own Legacy. Pure McCartney, his last Compilation, was released on June 10, 2016 and by the time my idea for a new Compilation would be out, the existing and his last Complation, Pure McCartney, would be at least 6 years old.
As I have stated several times here, Paul needs an "Updated Compilation" because "Pure McCartney" has become "Outdated" and doesn't reflect his entire Career anymore. Here is why "Pure McCartney" is an outdated Compilation:
McCartney 3 Album - Not represented at all (0 tracks)
Egypt Station Album - Not represented at all (0 tracks)
Flowers in the Dirt Album - Not represented at all (0 tracks) Nancy...I know there was a reason at the time "Pure McCartney" was released but I'm just looking at the current facts and this is another reason for the "NEED" for a NEW COMPILATION
Driving Rain - Not Represented (0 tracks)
Run Devil Run - Not Represented (0 Tracks)
Off the Ground - Not Represented (Only 1 track "Winedark Open Sea"; Where are all the OTG tracks including the OTG Complete Works (extra Disc and all the B-sides)
Press to Play - Not Represented (Only 2 tracks "Press" and "Good Times Coming/Feel the Sun"; Where are all the other tracks, B-Sides and Unreleased songs)
Electric Arguments - Not Represented (I think only 1 track was on Pure McCartney)
Flaming PIe - Represented fairly generously but...(Pure McCartney doesn't include Young Boy, Somedays, Heaven on a Sunday and really good B-sides like Love Come Tumbling Down, Same Love, Broomstick, Squid etc)
New (the Album) - only liminted representaton (Pure McCartney doesn't include "Alligator, On My Way to Work, I Can Bet, Everybody Out There"and extra tracks like Turned Out, Demon's Dance and Get Me Out of Here)
Memory Almost Full - very limited representation (Only 2 tracks on the Pure McCartney 4 CD Deluxe Edition; where are all the other great tracks, B-sides etc)
Chaos and Creation - very limited representation (only 4 tracks on the Pure McCartney 4 CD Deluxe Edition); where are all the other great tracks, B-sides etc
Tug of War - very limited representation; where's "Take It Away, the title track, Somebody Who Cares, The Pound is Sinking etc and the good B-sides
WITH ALL THE EXAMPLES ABOVE...I THINK I'VE MADE MY POINT. If Paul releases a NEW COMPILATION sometime in 2022, DUPLICATION WILL NOT BE A PROBLEM! Macca has so many songs (B-sides, Extra tracks, Demo's, Unreleases songs) that my proposed UPDATED COMPILATON will be filled with tracks that have never appeared on previous Greatest Hits and other types of Compilatons. Paul also has a ton of "Live Versions" so that on a few of the bigger hits, this New Proposed Compilation can use "Live Versions" as a means of not duplicating the same studio versions.
Yes, Duplication is not a Problem. The next hurdle involves the "Costs" and how to make this type of project affordable? Personally, I would be in favor of a "No Frills" type of Package. To reduce the costs for the average fan or consumer, I would vote for a Package that just includes the CD's themselves. For this type of proposal to work, it would be the "opposite" of the expensive type of "Archive/Remaster Packages that Paul has been releasing... No Books, No DVD's for completests and collectors. This is a Compilation with only the best songs of Paul's complete Career. In total, we are talking about a 10 CD Package. Better yet, you could release an "Initial" 5 CD Starter Package (1 CD each for the 70's, 80, 90, and the 2000's Decades). I like this idea of a Part 1 Package where the initial 5 CD Package could hit the retail market at a $49.00 Price as a "sale" price at a big Retailer like Target. If the initial package sells well, you then have Part 2 (the 2nd 5 CD package) selling itself.
The key would be the "publicity" for this New Package. You have to emphasize all the extra songs in this Package compared to past Compilations. You have to emphasise all the B-Sides, Demo's, LIve Versions, the Unreleased etc. This is what would sell this package. Songs covering Paul's complete Career and Era's that are "not on" previous Compilations. It is all about "convenience" for Paul and Beatle fans. And of course the "Publicity" would be all about Paul's 80th Birthday and his 5 Decades of Making Great Music after the Beatles.
Target Date, in my opinion, needs to be 2022 at the time of Paul's 80th Birthday. As I said, it could be in June (his exact Birthday) or the end of the year surrounding the Christmas Season of his 80 Birthday Year. Now is the time! This would be a package primarily for Older Fans, Baby Boomers (people my age in their 70's or fans in their 60's or 50's) while they are still alive. These older fans still buy CD's on a much more prevalent basis than younger fans. I would love to see this
type of "true representation" of a "Great Music Icon" happen while Paul is still alive. Hopefully, someone from Paul's team (or even his Family) will read these Posts and possibly help make it a REALITY.THANKS FOR YOUR ATTENTION!

While I don't really disagree, there is a danger of people saying....."He has another compilation out? How many does he need? I believe Yoko has done that too many times with John's solo work. He doesn't have that much to begin with, so to remix and/or remaster the same songs over and over with a different cover photo of John has become"ho-hum." Maybe it depends on the best marketing technique.....for Paul. Maybe if he were to release an album of songs he has never before included on any proper album...including demos such as "Goodbye" and "Wings of a Nightingale" I would sit up and take notice!

This is a great idea and I think the timing of it to celebrate his 80th birthday would be perfect. Like you stated, there has been several new albums since "Pure McCartney" and there are no songs from the excellent FITD. I also agree that you make this a "no frills" type of package, just the CD's and some cover art like any other release. I think it would be cool to have pictures of McCartney from each of the decades. The publicity to sell it would be easy, emphasis on songs never on original albums/compilations which includes B-sides, demo's and unreleased songs. I would make this project a initially "Limited Release" just like his "CHOBA B CCCP" album many years ago. If it does well, make it a broader release. Making this compilation a "Limited Release" would also give it some publicity. Announce McCartney will sign some of them for additional cost. Older fans will still buy CD's, they are just more careful what they spend it on.
Finally, even if this is not a big money maker it is something the McCartney team should do IMO. You wrap a nice bow around his 60 years of post Beatle songs for his legacy. Will they do it? My first thought is no because there is probably more money into doing re-issues. If it ever does happen IMO, it will happen many years from now when the estate may want something to make a few bucks on.

As BJ noted, there are a bunch of new albums since "Pure McCartney" and there is album like FITD that did not even have 1 song on "Pure McCartney. Like you noted, songs from B-sides, demo's and unreleased songs (love the songs you mentioned) need to be included to make the complation more attractive. As for John, he had so little post Beatle music in comparison to Paul so those compilations are a bit much.

Thanks for your imput "4Forever". The one thing about Paul is that he really has never stopped since 1970. He's been so prolific in every Decade including the latest one with McCartney 3. I know not everyone loves it, but it sereously has 5-6 really good songs.
As I have tried to prove above, Paul really needs an up-to-date Compilation especially looking at all the albums (not just McCartney 3 and Egypt Station) that haven't been represented well at this point. I think you make a great point about the need for the best marketing techniques. Fans and consumers are really intelligent for the most part. I think a fan like me didn't buy the 4 Disc "Pure McCartney" for one main reason. It was purely "ill-conceived" in my opinion. Look at all the albums like Electric Arguments, Flowers in the Dirt, Driving Rain, Run Devil Run, Off the Ground, and Press to Play that were hardly represented at all. Even great albums like Chaos and Memory Almost Full were represented poorly at best. I considered buying the 4 CD "Pure McCartney"Package but when I looked at the Tracklist, I was very disappointed. I was happy that Pure McCartney contained a lot of tracks (67 for the 4 CD Set) but some of the selections like Big Barn Red, Bip Bop, Press, Winddark Open Sea, and Girlfriend were not even the best deep cuts on those respective albums. And as a big fan, I didn't need another copy of Say Say Say, Ebony and Ivory and We All Stand Together. I also never liked Temporary Secretary but they included that one although I liked several other tracks on McCartney 2 a lot.
I think the reason that Pure McCartney didn't sell well was because of the overall "selction" of the tracks despite of the rubbish Paul was putting out there about the Package being so complete and so well researched. The fact of the matter was that it wasn't researched at all and it was the record company that was pushing the Package. I think people and Paul fans specifically didn't buy it in the masses because they were disappointed in general. Where are the great B-Sides, the great unreleased, the great demo's like you mentioned and the great deep cuts like Little Lamb Dragonfly, Single Pigeon, Somebody Who Cares, Footprints etc etc. Even the 70's Decade which was well represented on the whole (with Wingspan, All the Best etc) still had some great missing tracks like "Give Ireland Back to the Irish, Best Friends, The Mess etc etc. This is my argument for why Paul needs a final "great" Compilation that covers his entire career and era's. Even the 70's have enough good to great "rare" tracks not on other previous Compilations that would make this project very worthwhile for big time fans like us. Just my thoughts.

Thanks Yankeefan. The funny thing is that after I did this last exercise over the last 2-3 weeks, I feel even stronger there is an ABSOLUTE NEED. Besides the big 3 big albums that you mentioned (Egypt Station, McCartney 3 and Flowers in the Dirt) that aren't at all on Pure McCartney, You can't blame them on Egypt Station and McCartney 3 since the Pure McCartney Package was released before they were released but how about the rest of the Tracklisting. When I started to analize the 4 CD Compilation with 67 tracks, I couldn't believe how many good to great songs were MISSING from PURE MCCARTNEY. I'm referring to albums like Flowers in the Dirt, Run Devil Run, Driving Rain, Memory Almost Full, Off the Ground (Both albums including the Complete Works Package, ,and Press to Play. Even a few of the Solo Albums that had a decent # of tracks represented on Pure McCartney like Flaming Pie, New and Chaos were still MISSING KEY TRACKS. As I pointed out, the problem with releasing an "Updated and Complete Compilation" BY DECADE Would NOT BE A DUPLICATION PROBLEM AS LONG AS IT WAS DONE PROPERLY. I hink I have given them a great blueprint in this thread. Just also think of other "surprises" Paul and MPL has in their own VAULTS. In retrospect, I think MPL did a very poor job with their research when they released Pure McCartney. As I said, where are the B-Sides, Unreleased material, rare demo's etc. etc. How could they miss so many good to great songs! I think MPL understood the need at the time but where was the research. Big time and more "true" fans could have easily told them the songs that they failed to include.
The real problem and CHALLENGE for this kind of Project is in the "PRICING." Paul already has the "material" so the costs would be in the Packaging. That is why I'm suggesting a "No Frills" type of Packaging which is the exact opposite OF what they have doing in their Archive/Remaster Series. No need for all the fancy Packaging imo. No Books, no DVD's etc. Just give us the CD's and Music with the right Tracklisting. And do it by DECADE so you don't miss Songs and Era's. I have to think that many of the people that work for MPL are not true fans. That's who and where the "Research" needs to start.
Hopefully this will eventually come to fruition. If they do it right, I think many of us on Maccaboard will be first in line.

You guys sure went above and beyond expectations. Some interesting choices and good reading.
As a lifelong fan I would like to have and hear the rarities. The B-sides and the extras that I don't have because I don't have the re-release deluxe version or the Target/ Walmart extra track. I like hearing cuts that didn't make it and the changes. Bootleg type of stuff and the why didn't he use this song thing about it. That's because I have a lot of the songs and like when I am surprised by something completely unexpected. Usually they like to aim these albums at the Maybe I'm Amazed listener. (For The Beatles it might be the Hey Jude fan or the fan of 5 songs) ... maybe they know Band on The Run and My Love. I get it from a marketing and mass sales goal.
I even thought of a hybred - the expected hits, rarities, different versions, and well done live material. Throw some B-sides or extra cuts and I am interested... but I have bills to pay and trying to do some extra travel or other priorities on where the money goes. Hundreds of dollars is tough to come up with, yet I used to find a way to do so in seeing multiple Paul concerts in the same year with the same set list. If something like this is done, hopefully it won't be a rehash of what I have with one new song. Thanks for all your effort.

Also, I would LOVE to know what Paul has "in the vaults, I started a thread on that subject a little while back. I'm sure there is a lot, and not just alternate takes, but full unheard songs as well (like When Winter Comes).

McCall...you are 100% "Correct" about what just might be in Macca's Vaults. I was just using what already exists on Youtube when I was putting together my Lists for each Decade.
Just yesterday, I found a Youtube clip of Paul's version of "Wanderlust" from the "Give My Regards to Broad Street" Movie when Paul and George Martin "redid" his Vocals as part of the "Yesterday-Wanderlust-Here There and Everwhare" Medley. Youtube just isolated the "Wanderlust" part of the clip. To my ears, Paul's lead vocal was not only "different" than the Tug of War Studio version but it was slightly better. The lead vocal was softer and not as harsh. Not only that but the clip keeps the short snippet of Here There and Everywhere at the very end the video (music only snippet of Paul's beautiful melody line). As a fan, that's the kind of "surprise" I would love to hear on a "new and fresh"Compilation Set I'm talking about.
In a similar fashion, the "live version" of the song "1985" that Paul did on one of the tour shows in 2010. In this version, Paul scrapped the little "Band on the Run" snippet at the end of "1985"(that you always hear on the studio version). This version also included a great Rusty Anderson guitar solo to end the song. Since it was done in 2010, Paul gives a different but still very good vocal compared to 1974. These are the little differences (and Surprise!) that big time fans notice and appreciate rather than using the exact same "studio" version that we've always heard. This is what the 2016 "Pure McCartney" Compilation constantly did and used. The package didn't take the time to give fans a different Version or take. The exact same version you've always heard.
These subtle differences wouldn't cost more to produce. You just have to "dig" them out. They already exist. And as we have pointed out...there are many, many good songs that aren't on any of the previous Compilations including the last one "Pure McCartney".
Thanks again McCall for your imput.
PS I remember hearing the "Take it Away" Podcast from Ryan and Chris. In the "Off the Ground" Episode, they played a live version of Paul and Elvis Costello doing a very good Demo of "Mistress and Maid". This is exactly the kind of thing we would want in a New Compilation...just a different verson rather than using the same "studio" track.

The other thing I would like to mention is I bet they got some neat stuff from all the soundchecks they have done over the years, would be cool to include a few of those on this compilation. I am sure there are a bunch of unreleased songs and 50's covers that they have recorded from these soundchecks. The people who have attended soundchecks could weigh in here and tell us some of their favorites they would like included.
-
Great points Yankeefan. You are so right about stuff from "Soundchecks". I still remember all the hogwash that MPL was spouting out about all the "research" they had done for the "Pure Mccartney" Compilation. To me it was just quickly done/rushed with little research. They just used the same studio tracks for all the songs they had duplicated from earlier compilations. Yes, they added some songs in the 4 Disc Set from the "New" Album, Chaos and Flaming Pie but even on those, they missed some "key" tracks.

Correction
On Disc 2 Above...I should have included "Do It Now" as Song # 6
Looking at the 2011-2020 List above, I've been listening to the Youtube "live Versions" of the 2013 New Album songs that placed in the Deluxe Edition that followed the original Album. Specifically, The "live" songs at his Tokyo Dome appearance are very well done. This was in 2013 when Paul's voice was still at a top level. I noticed how good "Everybody Out There" and New (the song) was produced. In my proposed 2 disc Set for this Decade, I would defintely use the "Tokyo Dome" versions rather than the "studio album" versions that the "Pure McCartney" Compilation used. And the "Live Version of Queenie Eye" at the Tokyo Dome was better than the album version as well. Finally, I still can't believe that "Turned Out" was a bonus/extra track and didn't end the proper album instead of "Road". I also like the little piano snippet that ends "Turned Out". I also think that "Turned Out" needs to be on a separate Disc from "I Can Bet" because of the similarities in both songs. Both are great imo but should be on separate Discs. Just a thought.
Still like the choices above for this "final" Decade. When I say that Paul never stops form making music, this is what I mean.

Just a quick FYI - 1985 was recorded in September 1973, but released June 28, 1974.

Nancy...Thanks for the original recording and release dates of the song "1985". I was just pointing out the existence of a 2010 youtube video of Paul and Band playing and singing "1985" at one of his shows in 2010.. As far as Paul releasing a new Compilation Set in 2022 (or even beyond next year) I would rather a different version of that song (or other Big Hits) rather than having the exact same version you hear on the radio or from your own original CD. Give us a "new version" as long as it is very good. In this case, the Youtube 2010 video of this "live version"had subtle differences from the oriignal album version. Paul and the Band didn't include the ending "Band on the Run snippet" (the song) and Rusty Anderson played a great guitar solo at the end which ended this specific performance. As a fan, those are the kind of subtle differences I would greatly appreciate and I'm sure other fans would too.

Nancy...Thanks for the original recording and release dates of the song "1985". I was just pointing out the existence of a 2010 youtube video of Paul and Band playing and singing "1985" at one of his shows in 2010.. I have to agree with Yankeefan. This might be Paul's Best Solo Decade. By doing 2 Disc, I love the Bonus and B-Sides on Disc 2 above. When you look all the songs Paul wrote since the beginning of the 2000's (See my 2011-2020 List --2 disc Set --on this page also), it's pretty amazing imo.
