LEFTOVERS AND RARITIES (NEW ALBUM FOR PAUL TO RELEASE FOR HIS 80TH BIRTHDAY

" Only Bob Dylan has continued in their old age to be that prolific with "new" good songs. "
I would add Springsteen to this list and while not as old as Dylan and McCartney, he is 72.

If you could do me a favor...could you look on Youtube for Hope of Deliverance and put the "live" video from the Ed Sullivan Theatre in NYC. One view I think shows how good Paul's Band was and in my mind the song (Hope of Deliverance) done "live" is much better than the studio counterpart. I think that Paul's vocal on the album on many of the tracks sounded so more bland. In the live version, you also have Hamish and Linda providing back up vocals that you can clearly hear. I think the boardies will like seeing thel video. thanks
What year is the Ed Sullivan Theater from? I found this live one, but is concert from 1993:
Found it! It is the entire show, 23 minute:

Thanks Nancy. You have the right one. And Yes, that is Judith Light singing backup with Linda. Great ballad imo.
A wonderful ballad, indeed!... I think I still prefer the album version.... but now, I am on a Press to Play listening kick!
I'll be in the minority, I presume, in how much I like this album.... give or take a couple of songs...
But.... I think we are all agreed.... we all have our differences on the merits of all Paul's albums.
The sum of them all is, however....
EPIC

Thanks Nancy!! You're right the first video is from one of the concerts on his subsequent World Tour. Hope of Deliverance here is just as good as his performance at the Ed Sullivan Theatre. Once Paul got out on tour, his performances on the "Off the Ground" songs (as well as his whole band) were so much better than what you hear on the album. Paul and the Band (Robbie, Hamish, Wix, Blair (the drummer) Linda and of course Paul) got used to each other and really did a great job on the "Off the Ground" songs.
Thanks for finding the whole Ed Sullivan Theatre show...a great find. Great to hear some of the versions of his old Beatle songs. The version of "Can't Buy Me Love" is radically different than the Single you always hear on the radio but I still like it. It's like a bluegrass version. Once I heard it a couple of times, I really like this version. I also liked Fixing a Hold, Michelle, Penny Lane etc. here.

You're so right Yankeefan about Springsteen. Another of the "classic rock" artists that is still writing good songs.

Thanks, I enjoyed watching these again. Good memories and a good band for the tour. He does do a good job on the Off The Ground songs.

The show I saw in Charlotte NC in 1993 was the one FOX televised. This is the show that also had "Robbie's Bit" that was on the "Paul Is Live" album. I assume it was done to allow FOX time for a commercial break -lol. If my memory is correct, this was the last show of the US tour and I sadly believe the last performance of Linda McCartney in the US. Paul did quite a few songs from "Off The Ground" and they got pretty good reception in Charlotte.
Ed Sullivan show was fantastic and it was cool seeing Paul "rock" the mullet back then - ha ha.

Great point Yankeefan about the Charlotte Show being the last show on the tour. And I belive that would have been Linda's last concert show. So Sad. I know she was involved and sang on some of the Flaming Pie songs but Charlotte would have been her last Concert as a member of the Band. I saw the same Concert at an earlier show in Philadelphia. I loved the show as a whole.

Thanks so much Nancy for posting the whole Ed Sullivan Show to Promote the Off the Ground album. Like "Fool" I watched the whole video. Since it was a televised MTV show ( On December 10, 1992) it was a little frustrating to watch because they had the "make-up artist" come out 2-3 times to make Paul look his best. It interrupted the Show a few times which I found annoying. But the show itself was great. Paul's vocals at this point was great because it was before the 1993 World Tour to promote the Off the Ground album. Paul's vocals here were top notch and it was great to see this Band. .Hamish was Paul best back-up vocalist imo and he was great as well as Robbie's fantastic guitar work. Wix did his usual magiical things on the Keyboards and Blair is an excellent drummer.
It was great rewatching this TV Concert. I forgot how good Paul and Band played that night. They should come out with a Remastered version of this Concert without the interruptions. I'll write later about the Concert.
As far as I'm concerned, Paul did 2 Great Concerts for TV in the 90's. This was the first one and then later like in 1998 I believe Paul and his "new" Band did a prmotional TV Show from The Tavern in Liverpool to promote the Run Devil Run album. I later bought the DVD for that Show. Both shows were incredible and really spotlights how great his voice was even in the late 90's.

You're welcome! Glad you guys enjoyed it!
P.S. B J, I know you meant the Cavern, not Tavern, and it was 14 December 1999: (I have the DVD too)

Thanks Nancy. I knew you would know the date. It was late so I was pretty tired. I never have a problem with buying a DVD of one of Paul's concerts. Yes, the Cavern Concert was also a great one. I also bought the Red Square DVD which was equally fantastic too.
The Cavern Concert was amazing in that Paul, as you know, had a totally different Band. Those guys and Paul singing so many of the early Rock songs along with a couple of his originals from Run Devil Run were equally as good. As I said, I would love it if Paul and team put out a DVD of the Ed Sullivan Concert back in late 1992. I couldn't believe how terrific Paul's vocals were for that show as well.

For those who didn't watch the last video that Nancy posted, I would highly recommend it if can get through the annoying interruptions of the "make-up" artists sprucing up Paul's face. Paul and team should do a remastering of the music on this show. It was a combination of terrific of new songs (at the time Paul and the Band were promoting his new songs from Off the Ground) and old Beatle classics.
Here is my brief review of this old MTV TV Concert (from December of 1992):
First the Off the Ground songs that Paul and Band did that night. I had seen a couple of the Off the Ground songs individually on Youtube...Hope of Deliverance and I Owe It All To You. I couln't believe how much better they were than their studio counterparts you heard on the actual album. Watching the whole concert, I couldn't believe how true it was for the rest of the "Off the Ground" songs (and there were plenty of them performed that night). In retrospect and my theory as to why so many Paul fans didn't care for the Off the Ground Album in general. My theory is that Paul was "oversinging" with the vocals. The final mixing from the album didn't show the wonderful back-up vocals that Hamish Stuart was providing on the "live" MTV Show. And I think Paul vocally was trying too hard on his "studio" vocals. I never cared for his vocals on songs like C'Mon People, Peace in the Neighbourhood and Biker Like an Icon etc. On the live show, Paul was relaxed and wasn't overtrying. And when it came time for Hamish to come in, it was beautiful. The concert also showcased how good the rest of the Band were (e.g. Robbie's great guitar work and Wix's fantastic keyboard work). It also showed how good of a acoustic guitarist Paul is (especially on Hope of Deliverance!) is!. I also loved the fact that Paul did one extra song not on the Off the Ground album that later became a B-side for one of the OTG singles....Big Boys Bickering (you know the protest song), where Paul threw out a few F-bombs. The song itself was fantasic. As I mentioned I liked C'Mon People, Biker Like an Icon and Peace in the Neighbourhood so much better. I loved Wix's intro on Peace in the Neighbourhood and I loved, loved Robie's solo guitar on the ending. I also equally liked the "live" OTG songs like Get Out of My Way, Looking For Changes (Paul's singing was fantastic on this one) and the title track "Off the Ground". This is the way the songs should have sounded on the album.
As far as the Beatle and old Wings' songs, I found them fascinating. First of all, when have you heard "Fixing a Hole" done live? It was fantastic. And I loved the "bluegrass" version of "Can't Buy Me Love". I also loved Penny Lane, Michelle, Sgt. Peppers (again fantastic guitar work by Robbie) and Live and Let Die. I was surprised how much I liked "My Love". Paul brought back his "Soul" vocals for "My Love" just liked he did on Wings Over America and the RockShow DVD. I even liked "I Wanna Be Your Man" (a Beatles' song I never really liked) because of Paul and Band's singing of this one. It was a more soul and blues version. Finally I loved the bluegrass version of "Can't Buy Me Love". Paul and Hamish really did a good job on this radically different version. I would be interested what others thought. Even the "jingle bells" track was interesting (Yes this concert was during the Christmas season) so it was great seeing Paul having so much fun and being so spontaneous. As I said previously, Paul's vocals were top-notch and it would be great if Paul and team could produce a finished and remastered version of the concert without the annoying interruptions.
Thanks folks.

To summarize this Maccaboard Post, above is my suggested tracklist for Volume 1 of my proposed new CD package called
LEFTOVERS AND RARITIES Volume 1 - from 1970 to 1997 (The Release of Flaming Pie)
Release Date: June 18th 2022 to conincide with Paul's 80th Birthday
I hope that either Paul, his close advisors, or his family sees this List. I'm also proposing a Volume 2 for LEFTOVERS AND RARITIES which would contain songs from 1999 (Run Devil Run) to this current year.
The Tracklisting would focus on many of the B-Sides and extra songs from the Paul McCartney Album Sessions that didn't make the final "Album" cuts. Because many of these B-Sides and "Leftover" songs are relatively UNKNOWN anyway, I believe this would be a viable idea for a 2022 CD Package. The 2 Volume Set would contain in total about 80 Songs. Each set would contain 2 CDs each.
By releasing a CD package like this, consumers and regular Paul McCartney fans would get to know many more Paul written songs that to this point have been relatively unknown. I believe that with good publicity (newspaper and magazine articles describing the project and CDs) this kind of inexpensive package would sell. In researching these songs, I believe in all honesty, these are not just "throw away" type songs. They are very good extra and leftover songs that are just unfortunately and relatively unknown.
How many of today's music artists can introduce approximately 80 songs that are good but not on original albums and generally unknown. This kind of Package would indeed sell and get more people familiar with so many good songs that they haven't heard. It's like 80 "new" songs released at the same time. Only a handful of Artists like Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and Taylor Swift are this prolific.

Actually, one of my favorite OTG songs that night was "Get Out Of My Way" which has a 50's rock style and great guitar playing my Robbie. This show is another example why it is mind blowing "Hope Of Deliverance " was not played regulary on more tours. It seemed Paul would only do it in certain South America countries after the 1993 tour. Another favorite of mine is the title song from the album, good rocking song with some excellent guitar moments from Paul and the band. "Biker Like An Icon" is one of my guilty pleasure songs, I know most people hate it but I just like it and it is much better live. I was never big fan of "Peace In The Neighborhood" or "Cmon People" and this show does not change my opinion. I was never impressed with "Big Boys Bickering " either, only reason it is ever mentioned is because he used the "F" word.
"As far as the Beatle and old Wings' songs, I found them fascinating. First of all, when have you heard "Fixing a Hole" done live? It was fantastic. Like you, I loved hearing "Fixing A Hole"and the different version of "Can't Buy Me Love". I always loved "My Love " and Paul's vocal was wonderful. That being said, "My Love" is like "Maybe I'm Amazed"and that Paul should have stopped singing them when it was obvious he could no longer do the vocals well anymore. "I Wanna Be Your Man" is another early Beatle song that I always liked and this version was very good. The other songs you mentioned were also very good but they were also done well on tour with this band and Paul's current band. Finally, this was great show in a small venue and if Paul was ever to perform live again this is they type of show he should do. Play in small venue and play about 90 minutes.

It is such a shame he never did a small venue tour in the UK with the RDR band. He could have just added a few old Beatle classics from their first two albums and it could have been quite a show. I understand this was after the death of Linda but might have been good for him to get out in public and have some fun - oh well. Small venue tours are low key and I am sure it would have been a success.

Thanks Yankeefan for your imput. Like you, I really liked watching the complete concert/video of the televised MTV show way back on December 10th 1992. The main purpose for that show was to "kick-start" the new Off the Ground Album with Paul and his complete Band.
I have to agree that I loved almost all the "Off the Ground"songs done "in Concert" that night. Glad you mentioned the small venue where it was held. It made the Concert seem very "imtimate" which is always a good thing.
As far as the songs you mentioned, I also loved the rocker..."Get Out of My Way" early in the setlist. I also loved the studio/album version of "Get Out Of My Way" but to hear and see it "live" was even better. But from that point forward in the show, I felt that the "live" versions on the whole were much "better" than their counterparts on the actual album. I noticed that "Hope of Deliverance" was done at a faster pace so that alone made it better than what you heard on the album. I especially loved Paul and Hamish's vocals on "I Owe It All To You". Again, much better than the album versions. The big factor, in my opinion, was that Paul was so relaxed the entire night so his vocals were effortless so he didn't "oversing" like I thought he did on some of the actual album tracks. I have to admit that I like both "Peace in the Neighbourhood and C'Mon People"a little better than you do but these 2 tracks vocally in my opinion were so much better than what ended up on the album. I also enjoyed Paul and the Band doing the title cut "Off the Ground". Like the others, it was way better than the Album version. Even the track that some critics crushed in their "Off the Ground"reviews sounded so much better "live". All in all, a great Video and something that Paul and his Team should definitely consider releasing a fully finished and remastered DVD. They would just need to cut out some of the annoying interruptions like the "make-up artist" coming out on stage and taking her time to try to make Paul look his best. Those interruptions were definitely annoying in my opinion.
Like you said, the Beatle and Wings' songs done "In Concert" were also fascinatiing. I loved the rare version of "Fixing A Hole" (I don't remember ever seeing it done "live" before) and the "bluegrass" version of "Can't Buy Me Love" was radically different but good at the same time. The Band as a whole seemed very seasoned and could change on a dime while giving excellent perfomances.
Finally, what I loved about this "Live and Up Personal" MTV Concert was how spontaneous Paul was during the entire show. This was so different than many of his "regular" concerts where Paul can be a little too rehearsed giving the same stories after many of the songs. He was so personal and spontaneous that at some point he started doing an "off the cuff" rendition of "Jingle Bells" between a couple of songs on the Setlist. Since this show took place on December 10, 1992, it was actually Christmas time so I guess Paul wanted t get the audiience in the Christmas Spirit early.
Thanks Yankeefan...loved your imput and opinions on the songs and album.

Paul did do Fixing a Hole later in concert:
Live performances
Paul McCartney performed the song live for the first time by any Beatle on his 1993 New World Tour. He later reprised the song on his 2005 US Tour.

I was doing this post late in the evening. The Off the Ground song that I mentioned that some critics loved to "crush" was "Biker Like an Icon". Like you, it was a "guilty pleasure" type one for me too and I love the "live" version with Paul and the complete Band. I also liked the "Big Boys Bickering" done at this show. It's not as good as some of the other "extra" OTG songs done later on the 2 Disc Set of Off the Ground...The Complete Works like "I Can't Imagine" and "Sweet Sweet Memories", "Long Leather Coat" etc but I like the guitars on "Big Boys Bickering" so the music on this "live" verssion" was pretty good imho. It was just nice seeing Paul surprisingly bringing this rare one out. How often have we complained about Paul being so rigid about his setlist choices.

I have to say that I love both Volume 1 and 2 of this proposed album "LEFTOVERS AND RARITIES". I don't know which one is better...Volume 1 or Volume 2. I'll post the 2nd half of my Volume 2 (bringing up the Tracklist choices to around 40 Tracks) in a couple of minutes). I still think it would make a great project to release around Paul's 80th Birthday in 2022 and when all this "hoopla" about the "Let It Be" album, book, movie etc is over. If Paul doesn't have a new album of brand new material ready by June of 2022, this would be a very viable package to release next year around Paul's 80th Birthday. So many of these songs (all the B-Sides and Unreleased material) would go over very well and imo would sell well with the correct publicity. As I have said, these aren't just "throwaway" type tracks. They are imo high quality songs that should be heard and that many fans only vaguely know. For example, just look at the "Leftover" songs here that didn't make it on the Chaos and Creation or Memory Almost Full albums. People who really like Paul McCartney would love to buy this type of inexpensive CD package. Even if they have bought most of Paul's Solo and Post Beatle albums, this is be a collctlion they would love to own since so many aren't on the original albums.
So I have said as much as I can say about this topic. I just think it would be great for Paul's "legacy" to have so many of thise very good but unknown songs in one collection. I just hope some of Paul's close advisors read this proposal. It's not only viable, it would "sell" well.
