Taking a Closer Look at Paul McCartney’s Sneaky Great Late-Period Album ‘Chaos and Creation in the Backyard’

Actually, I think it is his best solo album ever. It was not very commercial album and the mood for the most part is somber. Usually, a McCartney album will have a clunker or two no matter how good it is, this album is flawless IMO. Kudos to Nigel Godrich for getting and demanding the best from Paul. He had the guts to stand up to Paul and tell him the truth when something was not good. Sadly, too many people don't even know this great album exists which is a shame.

I agree, this album is very special, a wealth of melody and lyrics. It would be great if he would work again with Nigel Goodrich. Thanks to the late George Martin for steering Paul to him and to Paul for doing the great work.

@yankeefan2 Even the songs he recorded during the sessions, but left off the album deserve to be there to make it even stronger, particularly "I Want You To Fly." Love that song, the overall feel of it, the soaring sound. "Too Much Rain" packed an emotional wallop that really got me!!

I loved "Summer of 59" also which was the B side to "Jenny Wren".

"Chaos" is excellent, but I tend to go back and forth as to whether I prefer it or the followup, "Memory Almost Full." They're definitely different sides of Paul, with "Chaos" being mostly Serious Paul while MAF has a heavy dose of Wacky Macca. These 2 are among the reasons why I think the period from "Flaming Pie" forward is the strongest of his post-Beatles career.

I think it depends on your mood when you are listening to albums. MAF is fun and quirky (Mr. Bellamy) and makes you want to dance tonight (pun intended). CHAOS is a thought-provoking reflective album and nice to listen to with a nice glass of wine -lol
