New album by Ringo, titled Postcards from Paradise

"Yes his name is Billy Shears. You know it has been for so many years..."

So I did revisit "Rotogravure" last night, and it's not bad. It doesn't quite have the zing of the two prior albums, but it's an entirely pleasant listen -- and certainly doesn't approach the depths of "Ringo the 4th." That said, there's nothing on it that stands out. I'd totally forgotten that it had compositions from all 3 other ex-Beatles on it, perhaps because they're all okay but forgettable. They all sound like tunes that John, George and Paul wrote that didn't quite make the cut for their last album, so they gave them to Ringo. But I have to say, "Las Brisas" is a guilty pleasure. Still, I'll take "Postcards" by a considerable margin.

It's like my opinion on Bad Boy and Ringo the 4th... Bad Boy being forgettable, and The 4th being a guilty pleasure... Postcards wins over all 3 any day though

I love 'Ringo The 4th'. One of the most underrated albums in the Beatles canon. I like it more than 'Postcards', which is okay but a bit repetitive. However, 'Postcards' is an improvement on the lacklustre (and criminally short) '2012'.

Heeeeeeeey, someone else who loves The 4th.... I can't call it better than Postcards. Oh no no no no no no no no no. Not by a long shot

OK. New topic regarding Postcards. Time to get the music lovers thinking. Ringo has released 18 albums. How does Postcards compare to the other 17? Which albums are better than Postcards? Which are worse than Postcards? Which are at about the same level of enjoyment? For me, I consider it to be better than: Goodnight Vienna Rotogravure The 4th Bad Boy Stop and Smell The Roses Old Wave Ringo Rama Liverpool 8 Ringo 2012 It's about the same as: Choose Love Time Takes Time Y Not As for albums, that are better than it, all I can really think of is Ringo (naturally) and Vertical Man, that last one is a tricky one, cause I'm not sure if it's as good as or a bit better. I have a similar dilemma with Y Not. I love that album to bits. It has some really fun tracks, including my personal favourite title track Ringo has ever recorded... but is it better than Postcards? I'm not too sure

It is always hard to rate a new release in comparison to an artists overall body of work, but I would rate the incredible "Ringo" album as superior to Postcards. "Goodnight Vienna" and "Ringo Rama" are marginally better than Postcards. "Time Takes Time" is easily the equal of Postcards and maybe "Ringo 2012" which I think is a good one too. Perhaps "Beaucoups Of Blues" but that's difficult to assess as that's the only C&W album he's done. Tough to compare. All the rest of Ringo's albums are (to varying degrees) slightly below the standard of Postcards. .......and count me in as someone who enjoys Ringo The 4th. It's like a guilty pleasure that I spin every once in a while. The decadence of the disco era is perfectly (or imperfectly?) on full display on that album. And any album with Wings on it is a winner for me.

I remember buying "Ringo the 4th" a few days after it was released and instantly loving Wings. The strongest song on the album. It was also a surprise to find that Ringo had co-written 6 of the songs on the album which was highly unusual for Ringo back in those days. On the Ringo album he'd been credited with 4 songs, Goodnight Vienna with 3 and Rotogravure with just 2 (excluding spooky weirdness). So to have an LP with 6 Ringo songs on it was a pleasant surprise. Gypsies in Flight and Gave it All Up could have fit nicely on the "B of B" LP.

Wings is an interesting specimen. If I could have my way, it'd be a regular part of Ringo's touring setlist. I think Ringo 2012 really did improve it though. Super fun song, way up there with the likes of Oh My My and Back Off Boogaloo por moi

From "Ringo the 4th" I'd choose "Gave It All Up" as a favorite. Ringo sounds kind of tired on it but it fits the song and mood. On the other side of this I'd choose "Tango All Night" as my favorite uptempo number. "Wings" is a nice enough song I think, but I've never been hooked on it to an extent where I have to play it three times in a row, as nowadays with "Rory and the Hurricanes"...

Yeah, Rory is that kind of song. You play it a zillion times a day, and it doesn't get boring . As for Wings, You probably won't get a massive hook for it if you're looking strictly on the 4th. You need to listen to it from Ringo 2012. That's a much better version. Worked for me at least
-
Yep, thanks for the tip, I'll put on "Ringo 2012" now. It's been a while since I played it. It is perhaps not the one I reach for most often in my Ringo collection. At least not so far... But I'll listen to it now!

I'm not sure exactly how I'd rank "Postcards" in relation to Ringo's other albums, but I'm feeling pretty sure it belongs somewhere in the top 25% at least. Now, a question about those '70s albums we've been revisiting (and sorry if this has been asked and answered before): On most of the tracks Ringo and Jim Keltner are both listed as drumming, but most don't sound like there are 2 drummers. What's up with that?

They play that well together, they're in total sync? The first song with 2 drummers that leaps to my brain is Photograph. Doesn't sound like 2 drummers. They work that well together

Good morning class, How was your summer vacation and life with this album almost 6 months later? The title track and the kick-off song grew on me over this time. The album is solid and feels like a companion to R2012. Your thoughts? This thread had some much momentum until the first week in May.
-
I really enjoy the album. I hate the autotuned vocals. Can't get past them. Most of the songs though are very solid, but there's always that constant almost preachiness in the songs (ie) "I used to be a party guy, learned the error of my ways and I am now living a full and rewarding life, and I am telling you all to do the same!" And that irks me.

"No No No No, I don't smoke it no more. I'm tired of waking up on the floor!"

One year + one day later; how's this album holding up in people's album collection rotation? I think its the top post Hudson produced album thus far.
