Knocked out today thinking of John's sadly intoning "My mummy's dead" and then launching into "Mother, you had me/ but I didn't have you/I wanted you, but you didn't want me/so I, I just have to tell you/Goodbye ay ay ay" from Plastic Ono Band album. The melody to that is very beautiful I think. The anguish in his voice and lyrics are astounding, so raw and immediate. Lennon is so open with his pain. Then you have "Let it Be" by Paul with his "Mother Mary comes to me," also a gorgeous melody with utterly moving and compelling words. The two songs are so different... Yet bear the same theme, to an extent. Paul's sounds more like a hymn. Perhaps I've posted on this before, here, years ago. Don't like repeating myself. Maybe I didn't, though I wondered if you have a preference, which mother song do you like best, and why. "Let it Be" is regarded as more of a classic than John's, isn't it. I favor both almost equally. John's is a great deal more "edgy." And even more personal.

"Julia" is lovely and folksy. Thanks for reminding

The first song Paul wrote at age 14 in 1956 about his Mother Mary: I Lost My Little Girl

            John's song for Julia: Julia
            Peace and Love!

John's mummy song makes me want to cry longer and harder than Paul's "Let it Be" although the latter produces some tear duct action at times. So maybe John's wins...no...I feel it's actually a tie to me, now, formerly I automatically assumed it was "Let it Be." But why should two pieces of art have to compete, when they are each true art

I agree. Julia. Let it Be, for me, is a better song, and one of my favourite Beatles tracks, but for the sentiment and the pain being conveyed, and the subject matter on hand, Julia.

Love Let It Be. I think Mother is great too, just that last minute or so when he screams "mommy don't go, daddy come home" with increasing intensity is quite harrowing. I could see why some would not like it.

I was referring to Universal Love for all beings. No matter how great or small. The love of a child and Mom or Dad is one kind of earthly Love. John's and Paul's songs for their much loved Dearly departed Mothers being one example. Of course this love transcends the earth eternally.

(Whisper) "For the other half of the sky..."

John wrote Woman for Yoko. He called Yoko "Mother." On a macroscopic level it is about Mother Earth. The essence of woman. Just that realization was so heavy it made me cry...❤️ Looking for interview...

Chairman Mao's quote. I believe John expanded thusly: "It's to Yoko but it's for all women." Plain and simple really.

Here is the excerpt from John's last Rolling Stone interview about the song "Woman." "Carl Jung once suggested that people are made up of a thinking side, a feeling side, an intuitive side and a sensual side," I mention. "Most people never really develop their weaker sides and concentrate on the stronger ones, but you seem to have done the former." "I think that's what feminism is all about," John replies. "That's what Yoko has taught me. I couldn't have done it alone; it had to be a female to teach me. That's it. Yoko has been telling me all the time, 'It's all right, it's all right.' I look at early pictures of meself, and I was torn between being Marlon Brando and being the sensitive poet -- the Oscar Wilde part of me with the velvet, feminine side. I was always torn between the two, mainly opting for the macho side, because if you showed the other side, you were dead." "On Double Fantasy," I say, "your song 'Woman' sounds a bit like a troubadour poem written to a medieval lady." "'Woman' came about because, one sunny afternoon in Bermuda, it suddenly hit me. I saw what women do for us. Not just what my Yoko does for me, although I was thinking in those personal terms. Any truth is universal. If we'd made our album in the third person and called it Freda and Ada or Tommy and had dressed up in clown suits with lipstick and created characters other than us, maybe a Ziggy Stardust, would it be more acceptable? It's not our style of art; our life is our art.... Anyway, in Bermuda, what suddenly dawned on me was everything I was taking for granted. Women really are the other half of the sky, as I whisper at the beginning of the song. And it just sort of hit me like a flood, and it came out like that. The song reminds me of a Beatles track, but I wasn't trying to make it sound like that. I did it as I did 'Girl' many years ago. So this is the grown-up version of 'Girl.'

Well, regardless of which way the cookie crumbles, I gotta say that "Woman" is one of my all-time favourite John songs.... Actually it goes beyond that.... it's one of my favourite songs. Of anyone. I just adore it.
