The Beatles Mentioned on TV
-
@njr Nancy, I'm going to jump on to this thread.... but it won't be about mentions on TV.... I like an occasional bet on the horses..... and it is amazing how many horses in Australia are named after Beatles' references.... My good mate had a horse called Dig a Pony.... did well. Heaps of Beatles references to horses.
So, I'll reference the "Beatles" horses and let you know how they go..... A horse called "Real Love",,,, won.

This being said, I do run the risk of being admonished by some who don't like horse racing....

@toris That’s cool - I used to own a gelding sorrel quarterhorse named Jonathan Sport (he had papers) that I called Sport. This was 1992/1993. If I could afford a horse now, I’d give them a Beatles-reference name!
P.S. I love horse racing! Watched the Kentucky Derby. Was really into it when Secretariat won the Triple Crown. -
@njr Beautiful!

Jeopardy 6/6/23
RIAA top-selling artists for $200This rock band tops the list with more than 183 million album sales, and that’s all the clue you get.
Who are The Beatles? (the 2-time champ easily got it)
-
Jeopardy 6/8/23
Hairy Styles for $400
Big in the ‘60s, a Beatle haircut is also called by this rhyming name. What is mop top?
NOBODY KNEW IT!

@njr Isn't that aggravating??! I almost hate when Jeopardy has any Beatles-related question or category now because quite often people just don't know.....anymore. I forget which song of theirs it was recently that provided lyrics. Easy. No one even rang in to say what the name of the song was!!!! I believe it was Strawberry Fields....or some other easy song to name. And they couldn't!!!!!
-
We have to understand the name of that haircut originated around 60 years ago. I did not see that show but willing to bet at least 1 or 2 of the contestants were not even born then. Even if they were, when was the last time you heard anybody use that term? Sure, this is easy for people like us, but it is because we are big time fans of the Beatles. Awhile back Jeopardy had a NY Yankee category, and they did not get one question correct. My goodness, these people never heard of Babe Ruth - lol.
-
Like I said to Nancy in another post, these types of questions are about things from around 60 years ago. How old were the contestants? There are a lot more famous Beatle songs that the "everyday" type person might know some of the lyrics than "Strawberry Fields" IMO. Just because these questions are simple to us does not mean these contestants are not smart.

On Entertainment Tonight 6/9/23, they were talking to various celebrities about their kids and one guy (name escapes me) said he had his son convinced that he produced the Beatles for 10 years!

Yeah, I know! It just really cracked me up because one of my good friends has moptops as part of her email address! Of course had to tell her!

See my post here on April 25th (I watch Jeopardy every night!)

We do get Jeopardy on cable TV here in Australia.... and years ago, they tried to do an Australian version which just didn't work out... It was crapola.... Of course Alex Trebek was the long standing host.... Is Blossom (who was brilliant in Big Bang Theory) now the host? Mayim?

We have a TV quiz show in Australia called Hot Seat (Who Wants to be a Millionaire).... and every time a question comes on for a 25 year old, for example, that relates to the 1980's, they say, "Before my time"..... Times have changed. I am typical Gen X..... But, I grew up loving things that were well before I was born. The Twilight Zone, one of my favorite shows. Ended before I was born. Get Smart. 1965. Before I was born. I've got the whole collection. Cost me a grand. A Night At the Opera, Marx Brothers, one of the great movies. 1935.... We had a sense of appreciation for history. The people of today have lost their appreciation of history. Then again, we didn't have multiple streaming devices, the internet, those dreadful dating devices and SMS/email. All distractions from history.

She shares being the host with Ken Jennings. (he is former all time Jeopardy contestant winner)

Being aware of the Beatles and knowing something like "Moptops" or the song "Strawberry Fields" is different things. I did not say you said they were not smart. I was just stating because you are not great in one category it does not mean you are not smart. Actually, I am surprised when younger people today know anything about the Beatles. That is due to these generations IMO don't care anything about any type of history for the most part. I know I did my part (ha ha) as a parent and exposed my daughters to Beatles (classic rock) music and they love it, they are in their 30's. My oldest daughter (dance teacher) one year used instrumental version of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" as a recital song for one of her dances a couple of years ago. She was pleasantly surprised that when she asked the class if they knew the song, most of the 11-12 year olds at least knew it was a Beatle Song.

Agree 100%. These generations have no appreciation of history which is sad. As a young boy who loved the Beatles, I knew about and appreciated the music of my parents' generation. My mother was a big Frank Sinatra fan and had a wonderful collection of "big band" era records. Probably one of my favorite moments with her was when I took her to a Frank Sinatra concert in NY many years ago.

That would've been awesome! The great Frank. I got into the Beatles cos my mum had some records and she went to the 1964 concert in Melbourne.... And then I evolved into a massive Beatles' fan. I know so much more about them than Mum... And when Paul (FINALLLY) came back to Australia in 2017, I took my mum and my daughter. Three generations. It was a great time!
