"Like a Rainbow" is a lovely, wonderful song, but the rest on their wanna-be-sgt.-pepper album are not so hot. They're pretty much rubbish.

In an interview, John said the Stones did everything they did--six months later.

Agree that The Beatles were on the Stones' minds even during their golden period: Beggar's Banquet to Exile on Main Street. Mick said 'You Can't Always Get What You Want" was influenced heavily by "Hey Jude". "Let it Bleed" was a callous response to "Let it Be", etc. It was only after the Beatles split did they go on with the "greatest rock & roll band" nonsense.

Wasn't "Let it bleed" released way before "Let it be" ever saw the light of day?

Any source? AFAIK, "Let it bleed" was released in December 1969, "Let it be" in March 1970 (Single) and May 1970 (Album).

Hamish and I must have read it in the same publication. Guessing it was an interview with John, but it could have been a Beatles bio book.

'Let it Be' was in the can for a long-time & I think many in the music industry knew about the project throughout 1969. I remember reading that Mick/Keith named the album as a response to 'Let it Be', even though the single/album wasnt released until 1970. I'll try to dig out the reference.

Cant find the reference online, but remember reading many thought Mick was playing with the Beatles again. Too much of a coincidence imo - Let it Bleed , Let it Be. I wonder if Mick was every asked this question directly.

The song Let It Be was recorded during the filming of Get Back during January 1969. The name of the film was later changed to Let It Be. A version of the song was on the album which Glyn Johns put together also called Get Back, but this album was shelved. Mixes were done in January and May of 1969. Another version of the song was recorded by Joe Cocker in 1969 but was likewise never released. It was also released on the first known Beatles bootleg LP Kum Back in Sept. 1969 which was an unofficial version of the Johns album. So the song was around for over a year before the official release (remixed by Phil Spector) of the single, the film, and film soundtrack in 1970. The Stones recorded Let It Bleed in March of 1969 and released in December. It may have been released before Let It Be, but it was recorded after Paul's song.

You had the Stones, Zeppelin, the Who, Pink Floyd, & Bowie all peaking in the early 70s. One of the great "what if's" is if the Beatles had stuck together, what would the pressure of their competition do to their music?

Hi JoeySmith! How are you? That's a good question! If The Beatles topped them all in the 60's and all of these bands, whom I love very much, peaked in the early 70's, The Beatles would have done better and topped them all! Like edcrawf said in one of the previous posts, you have The Beatles, then you have everyone else!

Fortunately, we will never know. The Beatles could have done an amalgam of "Band on the run", "Imagine", "All things must pass" and "Ringo", which would have been a fantastic album. Alternatively, it could have been a blend of "Wild life", "Mind games", "Dark Horse" and "Ringo the 4th", which probably would not have been a masterpiece.
