When I think of great Beatles' great guitar solos, they were done by Paul, John, & of course Clapton. Not to take away from George's legacy or his impact on the group, I would think with the amount of great material he had to work with, he would have many more signature moments than he did. 'Let it Be' is a perfect example. If ever there was a song that beckoned a great solo, this was it. Yet, I was never impressed by the solo on either the album or singles version.

Hmmm...interesting. I've always thought that the "Let It Be" guitar solo is beautifully done and full of heart. To each his own. There's certainly a lack of long solos from George both in the Beatles and as a solo artist. I don't think that John and Paul were into writing songs with long solos, and I guess this affected the development of George's style.

            Old Brown Shoe
            Till There Was You
I'm Down Paul might not know the lyrics, but George knows the solo.
Long Tall Sally Not the best sound quality, but they're all tearing through this song.

That's a great example. People who think faster + louder = better will never appreciate it, but that solo is perfect for that song.

Completely disagree with the original post on this thread with respect. Till there was you Kansas City A hard days night Old brown shoe ( off the scale ) The end ( George's playing is far superior to Paul and johns ) Let it be ( album version) Day Tripper ( one of my favourite ever solos - that tone !) And your bird can sing Roll over Beethoven Hey Bulldog Fixing a hole Real love Something ?!!!!! I could go on and on For what it's worth , I like Clapton and have every record , but think his playing on while my guitar ... is poor . George would have been better doing it himself.

Just for the record, Paul is playing the 2nd lead with George on And Your Bird Can Sing. I agree with you about all the great lead solos! But disagree about Clapton. Love him on WMGGW.

Oh yes, the solo in Something is brilliant!... love George's guitar work.

Interesting about And your bird .... The two theories / stories I'd heard was it was either John doubling , or George double tracking himself. Never heard Paul quoted here before. At the princes trust concert (86' I think) George and Ringo play . Half way through the guitar outro , George signals to someone to turn him up and proceeds to "duel" with Eric. I like what George plays so much more.

In an interview of George that I read, he said it was Paul. Makes sense. Paul was much more proficient on lead guitar (Taxman, Good Morning - later of course than AYBCS) than John. I never read that it was just George doubled.

Exactly. They went for preciseness..to the point. As such, George always delivered just what the song needed. The shimmering guitar on "It's Only Love" the sitar on "Norwegian Wood"....which in many ways makes the song....and the perfect slide guitar on "Nowhere Man" sums up the perfect George contributions. It wasn't easy pleasing John and Paul who had very precise ideas on how they wanted for their songs to sound. And since Paul, essentially, could play any instrument, it was easy to deliver just what he wanted without asking George. George's gorgeous guitar solo on "Something" shows just how flawless he could be. That song perfectly sums up his style and gift for melody. He knew what the songs needed. Ringo wasn't flashy ala' Keith Moon, but was perfect for the Beatles. Same goes for George. His guitar solo on his "Isn't It A Pity" is quite long.
