Sgt. Pepper re-issue
-
As I mentioned earlier, have SSF & PL replace Kite & Within You/Without You respectively. The flow is much better & that's what John and Paul had in mind from the beginning. George Martin said that WYWY was so out of place with the rest of the album, the only place to put it was to lead off Side 2. John pinched the lyrics from Kite from a poster. Easily the worst 2 songs on Pepper, imo.

I walked past Town Meadows (the site of the actual show on the Mr Kite poster) this afternoon, and surprised to read it's not liked! Musically alone even if no the pyrics Mr Kite is a great track that fits on pepper perfectly. I don't get whey people here are even debating which 2 songs to take off pepper to fit strawfields/penny lane - it's clear they are being added to what is already there, not taking away. And whats with the lack of love for good morning good morning?! Worth it for the guitar solo and pacing alone!

Pepper on vonyl lasts what about 40 minutes? But a single vinyl album can hold about 55 min - so technically they could have had those 2 on AS WELL as the rest of the album, so no need to kncok stuff off (And of course CDs hold 80, but we're talking the original vinyl.) Whay am i so bothered? I dont know! Its not even my fave album! Sleep deprived and winding down with 5 minutes onlinem sorry!

Yes, that is our Paul playing the guitar lead on Good Morning Good Morning! Love that song! No need to remove any songs! Depending on my mood, I may skip Within You Without You, but it has grown on me over the years.

I'd be happy to get rid of Good Morning it has always been my least favourite song in the album I always skip it.
Wow. I LOVE "Good Morning, Good Morning." It makes me feel like I've just been dropped into the middle of the swinging London scene circa 1966-67, more than any song I've ever heard. While I don't normally favor the death penalty, I think I'd make an exception for anyone who would actually f*** with the track list of Sgt. Pepper.

"Good Morning Good Morning" and "Within You Without You" are two of their most rhythmically interesting songs.

I agree. Within You Without You is one my favorite tracks on the whole album. Awesome lyrics. Personally I'd rather not rewrite history at this point. The album is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most important albums ever as it is. If they want a 50th anniversary edition with demos/outtakes and want to include Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane on another disc, that is fine.

Saw this 8/31/2011 while on Beatles walking tour in London

I assume they just need something to make this reissue "special". I can't imagine they would cut anything out. That said, they can't tack Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane on as bonus tracks at the end. A Day in the Life has to be the closer. You can't follow that with anything.
-
If they do add SFF & PL then they may as well go the whole hog and add Only A Northern Song as well, since that was recorded for Sgt Pepper too.

Why? That isn't a given. There is space enough for everything.

That's true, especially on cd. But if the idea is to re-write history and put back the two songs that were originally left off, then their replacements should now be left off too. We will then be left with the Sgt Pepper album as originally intended.

Yes but no one knows what would have been left off to fit them - not even The Beatles. As they never got that far as prioritising a track list that included those 2. How can you know what "they replaced" when they were released as singles 4 months before the album was released. All that happened was in the middle of recording a bunch of songs, 2 got put out as singles instead.
-
Sgt. Pepper is an icon. They're not going to mess with the tracklist. My bet is any extras will come on a 2nd CD. To do otherwise would be like painting a moustache on the Mona Lisa.

That's true. But who knows which songs would have been left off? I doubt even the Beatles had thought it through at that time. They were just recording songs for a new album. They may have ended up with too many as they did for "The White Album." I doubt they just reached a point where they said...."We have enough; we can stop now." But, we'll never know. (I would never chop "Good Morning." It's a rocker and leads directly into the reprise and "A Day In The Life"...the rooster crow matched with the guitar lick were genius. I can't imagine one without the other.) If anything, I would say "When I'm Sixty Four," but then Paul had it recorded at the same time as the first two that were released as singles and left off the album. So.... Years ago, I personally ended side one with "Strawberry Fields Forever," and opened side two with "Penny Lane".... Now, I can't imagine the album any other way. That's been my album for years....

Sgt. Pepper's 6CD reissue? http://www.masslive.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2017/04/the_beatles_reportedly_readyin.html

No, you don't drop two songs to add "Strawberry Fields" and "Penny Lane." If the Beatles can release "Let it Be Naked" I don't see Sgt Pepper's (the greatest album of all time) as so sacrosanct that those two songs can't be added. The question is where? You don't just add them to the end of the album. "A Day in the Life" is the only proper way to go out. (Yes, I know about the gibberish in the inner groove). Announce the reissue already...oh, and shut up and take my money.
