Beatles covers
-
On this day 16th Jan in 1969, Marmalade were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with their version of The Beatles song ?Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da?. It gave the Scottish group (who were formally known as The Gaylords after the notorious post-war Chicago Gaylords street gang) their first and only chart topper. Covering a Beatles song was good sport in the '60s; artists scrambled to try their versions and interpretations of the latest Fab Four offerings and some were more successful than others. I?m sure someone somewhere has counted how many artists have had hits with Beatles songs, and it will be dozens. McCartney?s ?Yesterday? is one of the most covered songs in the history of music with over 1,600 versions recorded. More http//www.thisdayinmusic.com/pages/come_and_get_it

There is nearly no cover that is better than the original Beatle-song. Maybe Joe Cocker with his version of "With A Little Help...", but otherwise.

One thing that has helped spawn the recording of covers was the early decision never to licence Beatles recordings to the "party compilation record" market. The most well known series being the "Now That's What I call Music series, but these types of collections were commonplace before they moved so dominantly into the market. Not even so-called definitive collections of 60's and 70's music have Beatles songs licenced for the records to demonstrate their dominance in the market. The songs do appear - but as seen - are represented by the many cover versions that were released. Martin

I quite like Bobby Womack's cover of And I Love Her, (or "and I just love her").
It's very different. Not saying it's really better than the original, but I do like this one. I think a beatles cover has to be quite different from the original, and try something new, to be really enjoyable. -
Cheap Trick has done the entire Sgt Pepper live...great DVD! she's leaving home
Getting Better A dat in the Life and a fan spliced together Paul & Cheap Trick -Golden Slumbers -
Are they blankets with Beatle Pictures on them? It would be great to cover up under the beatles at night. love doris

I kind of like when various artists do something different with the song (while keeping it tastefull)...for example, here's an example of a different interpretation of Paul's 'So Bad' which I like a lot
-
I think parts of Booker T. & The MG's "McLemore Ave." Are quite enjoyable considering Idon't usually dig covers of Beatle songs.

Actually, I find this more appealing than Paul's version...this proves the song does have a quiet but yet beautiful essense to it that gets lost by Paul (and it further proves my prior point)

Great version, I like it too. And I can't listen to the cover of "And I Love Her" you postet earlier in this thread, 'cause I live in Germany and this video is blocked here.

heard Ray Charles version of Eleanor Rigby on radio 2 last week.
-
steven tyler made a great cover of abbey road's medley take a look
-
Sinatras covers but the best I can think of is Roxy Music/Bryan Ferry's Jealous Guy tribute, even if it's a lennon solo. Or does the stones I wanna be your man count? (even thought they released it first)
