The Beatles and JFK
-
So, where we're the Beatles when they heard that JFK had been killed? Well 50 years ago tonight they were here: http://www.gazettelive.co.uk/news/nostalgia/50-years-beatlemania-hit-teesside-6327515 They are trying to revamp this venue and relaunch it as a concert venue.

Great pics in the photo gallery! Thanks for posting!

P.S. There is one pic of Paul with a camera that they label as Ringo! And another of all 4 where 2 are misidentified! :

Speaking of JFK, in his 1974 interview with Rolling Stone, Paul is asked about the idea that the Beatles "provided something for Americans they had lost with the death of Kennedy ? youth, happiness, freedom from inhibitions. Does that make much sense to you?" Paul's reply is: "No, none at all."

I'm pretty sure author Bruce Spizer would agree with Paul. It was just a happy coincidence that the Beatles came along a little over 2 months after the assassination of JFK.

Bruce is cool! I exchanged a couple of emails with him some years back.

Yeah he's a great guy! I run into him everywhere when I go to Beatles events--Nashville, Liverpool, Louisville, etc.

This article, written by Bruce Spizer, was posted in another thread. Bruce talks about the JFK/Beatles connection (or lack thereof) http://www.thefest.com/50-years-ago-today-tales-of-triumph-and-tragedy-the-beatles-kennedy-connection/

Thanks, that's good. So he's saying that it wasn't the youth of America that needed the diversion, it was the press and media of America, more or less. That detail about how his third-grade teacher informed the class of the assassination is pretty gut-wrenching.

The only connection I know of about The Beatles and Kennedy is that With The Beatles was released in the U.K. on the same day Kennedy was assassinated. Both occurred on Nov. 22. 1963. With The Beatles turned 50 years old on Friday.

I was also in 3rd grade and the teacher suddenly told everyone to line up at the door, that we were all being sent home. I was near the front of the line and I asked my teacher "What happened?" and she said "The President's been shot." (or "killed" I can't remember which) I also vividly remember all the TV coverage and the funeral procession with the drums. After this had been going on for several days, I asked my mom "When are they going to put the cartoons back on TV?" Hey, I was only eight years old!

I was in 1st grade, came home, and Mom and Grandpa both had tears in their eyes. The gravity of the situation hit fully the next day when there were no Saturday morning cartoons. It got worse Sunday, when we had to go to church twice: Mass in the morning, and praying for the late President in the evening.

Do you remember when Bobby Kennedy was assassinated? Probably not, you were less than 4. I was 13 and it hit me worse than JFK.

Yes, too young for that. I was 16 when John Lennon was killed, though; that was devastating, and it's still kind of hard to believe.

JFK was sad, but when Bobby was killed it was just unbelievable because it happened the night he won the California Primary election, and I thought they were going after the family. And it was just after Martin Luther King. Jr. was assassinated too. The 60's were not all good. I just remember feeling there was a lot of evil going on because there was also the Vietnam War, the Manson Family, and Altamont. Yes, you had The Beatles and Woodstock and the Moon Landing...but the 60's were effing heavy, man.

And urban riots, especially in the last half of the decade. In the summer of 1966, the Richard Speck and Charles Whitman (the sniper at U of Texas) mass killings were just weeks apart.
