Elvis Costello Thread

Just discovered him a few days ago, had heard of him before through Geoff Emrick's book and my dad mentioning him a few times. But now I have listened to him for the first time and I'm hooked. I bought The First 10 Years record and I must say every song is perfection. Now I want to start buying his studio albums in order. And I saw there is so many different choices and it's making my head spin. Which do I get? Also what do you think his best album is?

Armed Forces!

His early stuff like Imperial Bedroom. I have a soft spot for Spike, which has a couple of Macca collaborations on. Oliver's Army is a great song of course and check out Girl Talk as covered by Dave Edmonds, it is on youtube and the song Elvis 'let get away'.

That is really hard to tell you where to start. As someone who has his whole library, it is hard to find an artist so varied. The obvious starting point would be his first album, 'My Aim Is True', which usually ranks in the top 100 albums of all-time lists. The follow-ups of 'This Year's Model', 'Armed Forces', and 'Get Happy!!!' are all outstanding. His recent stuff is really good as well, however. It's like he decides to go a different direction with each album. His mellow albums 'Painted from Memory' and 'North' display his really expressive singing style. In short, there might be a couple of the 80s that are subpar, but they are all interesting. He is an amazing writer.

You can't be a fan of both? They like each other's work and have collaborated together many times. I first got into Costello because of his collaborations with Paul on 'Flowers in the Dirt' and 'Spike' in 1989 - it didn't mean I liked Paul any less.

Question about the different versions of the albums. The 2 disc Rhino sets are going for around $20 used. Is it worth it. I think I'll just buy the new Hip-O releases for $10. And maybe if I like them enough shell out for the old Rhino discs? And now I see the Hip-O releases are in digipack. Defiantly going to get those, I'm a sucker for a nice digipack case.

Purchased My Aim is True and This Years Model. Both great records but I think TYM is stronger album all the way through. And I don't know if it's just me or does TYM seem like a sort of rock opera. Telling the story about "This Year's Model" and all she goes through while being TYM? I might be crazy over analyzing this but that's what I think. Next: Armed Forces and Get Happy!!

Get Happy!, This Years Model, Armed Forces, Trust,My Aim Is True, King Of America, Brutal Youth, Spike, all great places to start..

I would definitely pick up The Right Spectacle The Very Best of Elvis Costello The Videos. I know it's not an album, but really highlights his career from 1977 to 1994. Also great to see how his songs, look, and videos in general evolved. I can recommend Blood and Chocolate as a great album. Also have a soft spot for Goodbye Cruel world, but that's just me. If you can find his 2001 2cd greatest hits, it's well worth it.

I've only just discovered his music too. I was so impressed with The first 10 years album, I've ordered his first 3 albums!

My favorite Elvis Costello song: Elvis Costello - 13 Steps Lead Down (Letterman 1994):
-
Talk about a musical chameleon. Elvis is absolutely fabulous! I saw him way back in the day at The Bottom Line in NYC in 1977. He was unreal! The whole band was kicking ass! I saw him 5 more times in and around the New York area. One of my favorite tunes....."Sulky Girl"!

Sulky Girl is a great tune, and Brutal Youth is a fantastic album. Calling him a musical chameleon is right on. Every album is so different, and he keeps putting them out more regularly than anyone else does. He is truly a songwriting genius. I listened chronologically today to his albums today from North through National Ransom, and the range in styles in those 8 years is incredible, from hard rock, easy listening, blue grass, jazz, folk, etc.

I agree Iowa Hawkeye! "Brutal Youth" is one of my favorite Elvis Albums! I also love "13 Steps" and "London' s Brilliant Parade" !!
