Aha, so the rapper Q-Tip was there. Maybe that's where the Kanye rumors started. "Q-Tip? Kanye? Who can tell the difference?"

From that Village Voice guy's Instagram: http://instagram.com/p/zG8kImiZz6/ Rose petals during "My Valentine," I presume?
It was red confetti and rose petals. Mostly confetti but a real rose petal fell on me.

Phoning it in. If even for "impromptu" gigs like this he wheels out the "been there - done that" ... well, good luck mate.
Yep, it is disappointing. I like 50's rock as much as anyone but this show was a great time to throw in a different song from "New" or some solo song he has never played before live like "Take It Away". Shows like this are when you can "wing it" (lol) a bit more because it is impromptu show and tickets are cheap.
All true, but really, for only $40? For that price, and in this size venue, I would be deliriously happy with this set. I'm sure that a big reason this was planned was to warm up for the SNL special tomorrow and the Far East tour coming up. I'm sure it gets Paul and the band's blood pumping.
That is part of my point, tickets were only $40 so you don't have to worry about disappointing people because they paid hundreds of dollars. Fine, play the Beatle hits but instead of "Matchbox", do something different from"New". I like "Every Night" as much as anyone but he had done that on tour, try one of the songs I mentioned as an example. My goodness, impromptu show should be time to just do whatever you want.
Yes, he certainly could have, and I would love it if he did exactly what you're saying. In this case, "what he wants" is apparently to do a set that he knew he could nail, and that the band already knew. He seems more likely to pull out odd solo tracks in a loose, acoustic setting; now THAT is a show I would pay hundreds of dollars to see.
You are right, what he wants is stuff he can probably do in his sleep. I agree with you about the acoustic setting and I would pay anything for that type of show also.

I bet board members who were there will have a lot of exciting stories to tell once they wake up. Meanwhile, here is a review by the New York Times: http://nytimes.com/2015/02/16/arts/music/paul-mccartney-offers-guileless-romance-at-irving-plaza.html

"He drew on every decade of his long career." Yes, except the '80s, '90s, and '00s. "the Beatles? brilliant Beach Boys parody ?Back in the U.S.S.R.? Hmm, I'd call it more a pastiche, and it's also mainly a pastiche of Chuck Berry's "Back in the U.S.A." Mostly a nicely-written review, though. Wish I'd been there, and I'm waiting for some firsthand accounts, too!

""He drew on every decade of his long career." Yes, except the '80s, '90s, and '00s" Exactly, you really wonder about the people who write reviews. Is it that hard to do a little research? - lol "Mostly a nicely-written review, though. Wish I'd been there, and I'm waiting for some firsthand accounts, too" Yes, very favorable which is nice with the exception of saying his voice sounded "jagged" on "Jet".

RamblinRed:
That's a cool setlist for a shorter show. You get both Bubby Holly and Carl Perkins. A Beatles song seldom played in 909, a great early Macca gem in Every Night. When was the last time he didn't do Live and Let Die? RamblinRed
And no BOTR, Long and Winding Road, Paperback Writer, Blackbird, and a few other setlist mainstays.
I think I'm most surprised he didn't perform Yesterday. parlance

Matchbox https//
We Can Work It Out https// Paul told us that his original Hofner bass was missing....He joked that some guy has it in a secret room somewhere... He also joked with the couple who got tickets from Jimmie Fallon. The show was outstanding, though it was very hard to see Paul if you weren't in the front area. I think the 2007 show at the Highline may have had a higher stage which made it easier to see Paul and the floor was much wider there. Irving Plaza is more confined, the stage was set at floor level and there were more people there to account for the crowding. But we got a fantastic show..Paul loved being there, and happily interacted with the audience. We were so lucky to be there! Thanks, Paul! -

He does look like he's enjoying himself, and he looks cool, not overdoing it at all. Thanks, Joyce, glad you had a great time!

Glad to share! We knew it would a bit different set list when Paul told us that at these intimate shows he likes to do numbers that are done at soundcheck..and then went into Matchbox and It's So Easy. A lot of exchanges of " We Love ya, Paul!" and "I love ya, too, Man!" article with photos http//www.utsandiego.com/news/2015/feb/14/mccartney-celebrity-fans-celebrate-valentines-day/

See, he can throw the chestnuts in whenever he want. This are the songs which would shake up a regular gig every now and then, no reason to only bring them out for special occasions like this where only a very select lucky few fans can hear them. Very frustrating.
The extras were soundcheck favorites.

Anything Paul does in concert is very well rehearsed including everything he did last night
-
While waiting for Paul on stage at Irving Plaza, we heard via twitter that he was arriving from Brooklyn's Barclay Center having attended the NBA All-Star event there. And so perhaps Paul arrived directly from there..we heard no sound check at Irving Plaza...Paul just came out and started his amazing show.
-
"My Valentine" must have been a wonderful moment, with the confetti and rose petals.
-
Yes, they floated down through the end of the song and the audience gladly collected them. Paul told us that was the "big" special effects bit of the night. LOL We also got small posters as we left. Paul's twitter account has a photo of it https//twitter.com/paulmccartney

He did the sound check before the game.

What a fantastic gift for the NYC fans! I relocated to Chicago eight years ago, but man, I would have been there too, goosebumps and all. I am so glad you all had a wonderful night. Reminds me of the Lyceum Theater gig in August of 1989, but that necessitated waiting in line all day. This sounds like a much more humane way to have done it. His voice sounded wonderful on the YouTube video of Matchbox and I am sure that My Valentine must have been special. Well done!
