How loud are Billy's shows compared to Paul's?
Having seen them each at Nationals Park, I'd say Billy is actually a bit softer. But not dramatically....
Billy just announced a gig at Nationals Park. Are you going?
You bet!hahaha Dad wants to see him this year too so *hopefully* we'll be going. I hate the stadium with a passion but, we'll just get cheaper seats and sit back and enjoy the show. Going on the floor there is a headache...hell, getting in there is a headache. I'm not taking the metro this time. I almost died after the macca show...not kidding either.

Haha... I took the subway from Barclays and everyone was drunk. I buttfucked some old woman when the train moved by accident, she had no idea I was there! It was hot, cramped, crowded, and I had the great opportunity to be standing right next to Seinfeld's biggest fan. He almost fell into the gap! He was so annoying, wished I pushed him If I like the show in April, I'll go see another at MSG, or in DC. I'm guessing you're also attending the One Direction concert at Nationals Park, too?
-
Earlier this week, it was announced that Billy Joel will play at Fenway Park in late June...no word on when tickets will go on sale
-
Saw that! Very cool....we've decided against Nationals Park. Not worth all the s**t that comes with nationals park to see him twice in one year.
-
Just got back from Billy at MSG. He waved at me and made eye contact twice. The sound was quiet, it rose during the encore, but not dramatically. Billy brought out 9/11 Survivors on "Goodnight Saigon" (I was an emotional wreck, everybody gave a standing ovation) He played all the songs I wanted. Gavin Degraw was AWESOME too. He's about as loud as Billy. If you're seeing Billy soon, the opening act comes on EXACTLY AT 8. He played till 8:35. Billy comes out at 8:50 and plays till 11. What a show. It feels like a dream. However, I hated how so many people left during Where's The Orchestra. I LOVE that song.
-
I had no idea there was an opening act! Oh well. Sounds like you had a spectacular experience! We won't be close enough for eye contact, but we have a sign about the birthdays in common so hoping for some attention....and special guests! Maybe our boy Paul.... Just looked at the setlist....that's a great one. A few I could go without, but nothing I genuinely do not like....very little of that exists from this man. I love Where's The Orchestra too! Would love to hear The Nylon Curtain from beginning to end live....

Agreed. Just wish he played a bit longer, like the Shea gigs. I keep on forgetting how lucky we are to see Paul do 3 hour shows, it's great but unfortunate in a way because no artist will ever top Paul. Billy was great. Just the sound was too quiet. I was shocked he did Goodnight Saigon though. The first time in like 5 years. I was just saying to my mom "shame he doesn't do it anymore"... And what do you know. After I save for Paul in Albany, I'll be checking out another Billy gig. PS Wix, you are allowed to enter the main square at MSG before 7 and wait inside. You don't have to stand outside.

Goodnight Saigon is very powerful live, or so it seems....hope it sticks around. Billy keeps a much more fluid set than Paul, each method has its perks. If I'm really pleased with the setup in NYC (which I think I will be) and he continues into 2015, I'll probably consider a return trip next year if the timing is right.
-
Yeah. I saw him. I camped out overnight, bleacher bum-style, at The GRAMMYS at The Shrine Auditorium, Los Angeles in the late 80's-early 90's...can't remember the year for sure...it was a New Kids on the Block year.... and on the day of it, I walked around the block to the side parking entrance to take a look, and he was in the parking lot talking to Bill Murray, about 50 yards away. There were cars going in and out and people all around. He was not an expected performer that year. They both stopped and turned to look at me from that distance. I don't know why. Yeah, I would camp out for him.
-
A buddy of mine saw the show last month (different section as me) and claims that Billy lip-synced Uptown Girl (1st song of the encore.) Wix, can you confirm this tomorrow night (based off of sound... If you can see he is then please check but if not judge from his vocals.) Thanks! I personally don't think he did.

Tomorrow is our day! VERY excited.... Thinking about possible guests since this is his birthday show after all: -Paul McCartney (He was in Liverpool yesterday, but that never stopped him before!) -Tony Bennett -Elton John (These two have had some words lately, so I dunno...) ....I'm ready to be wowed by Billy and his band, and hopefully surprised by anyone else who decides to drop by! King Macca- Maybe Frankie Valli is backstage singing it for him

Funny you should mention it, Billy dedicated Uptown Girl to Frankie Valli at the show! Have a blast tonight.

Back at our room now after a day about town, gearing up for the show....we journeyed about the park, taking in the zoo, some statues, museums....and walking right through Sarah Jessica Parker's film set

EXCELLENT concert....easily, taking the cake as the best show I've been to that Paul was not at. Gavin DeGraw began his set exactly at 8pm, and it was superb. I was very impressed with him and am glad I had the chance to see him. He was done at 8:35, and then Billy's tour manager came out and told us that there was a celebrity guest introduction for Billy, and that we would all sing happy birthday after that. The celebrity guest was Howard Stern who came out at 8:45, then by 9pm Mr. Joel was into his set! It was the perfect blend of hits and deep cuts, but what I applaud most about this set, is Joel's ability to leave out BIG hits, and still deliver and outstanding concert. He did NOT play "We Didn't Start The Fire" or "Only The Good Die Young" which I would imagine most people seeing him for one and only one time, would think they need to hear. Anyway, about halfway through Jimmy Fallon came out and seemed very nervous and twitchy. Him and Joel did a pretty awful accapella version of The Lion Sleeps Tonight (without the iPad) then he brought out a barber shop quartet and they did a barbershop-reggae song in rasta barbershop suits....it was hilarious! Billy was done at 11pm and didn't hold anything back, I'd go see him again in a hearbeat! Maybe next year.... 5/9/14 65th Birthday Setlist My Life Movin' Out The Entertainer The Ballad of Billy The Kid Everybody Loves You Now Zanzibar Goodnight Saigon (w/ NYPD) Allentown The Lion Sleeps Tonight (w/ Jimmy Fallon) Sweat (Jimmy Fallon Barbershop Quaret) New York State of Mind Scandinavian Skies (First time played since '82) Sometimes a Fantasy She's Always a Woman Don't Ask Me Why The River of Dreams A Hard Days Night Scenes From an Italian Restaurant Piano Man ENCORE Uptown Girl It's Still Rock and Roll To Me Big Shot You May Be Right
-
King Macca- To answer you question, there is no way Billy was lip-synching anything. He had two lyrical flubs that Friday night on "Don't Ask Me Why" and on none other than "Uptown Girl". So there's your proof! Also, Billy sings almost all his songs down about two steps. He's been doing this since like 2006.

Hey Wix, sorry it took so long to reply. Billy was fantastic at MSG. What did you think of the sound quality though? The acoustics at MSG are great, but I thought Billy could've been louder, especially compared to Paul. Goodnight Saigon is the kind of song that should be played near the middle/end of the show, not in the opening salvo. It's just more emotional. Also, SO JEALOUS you got SCANDINAVIAN SKIES!!!
-
I was very impressed with the sound quality and thought the volume was fine. That's the first show I've seen there though, so I don't have any to compare to. It's definitely the best of any other major arenas I've been to...Verizon Center (DC), Wachovia Center (Philly), Scottrade Center (St. Louis) Scandinavian Skies was a massive surprise and highlight for me. However, it was the only song all night that people were noticeably leaving for bathroom/concessions etc. But it was also a pretty hits heavy set, in my opinion, and compared to others he has done recently. I was expecting more deep cuts, but it didn't effect my experience at all. Everybody Loves You Now and Scandinavian Skies were the only two songs my grandmother didn't know!

More artists should change the key songs are sung in as they age,we all change its just life so if you want to hear Piano man live but in a lower key you can because Billy owned up to life and clearly isnt trying to fool anyone,if you dont like it stick to the records of him and avoid the live shows, simple really. Me i'd take a live version of any song any day of the week.
