Lyrics: "HOPE" Some hope for the future; Some wait for the call To say that the days ahead will be the best of all We will build bridges up to the sky Heavenly light surrounding you and I From out of the darkness our future will come If we leave the past behind we?ll fly beyond the Sun We?ll be together, sharing the load Watching in wonder as our lives unfold Hope for the future It?s coming soon enough How fast can we achieve? Hope for the future It will belong to us, if we believe. Hope that rises in the dark Where nothing?s ever seen Lighting undiscovered places no one?s ever been Some hope for the future; Some wait for the call To say that our destiny will be the best of all And we will build bridges up to the sky Heavenly light surrounding you and I Hope that rises in the dark Where nothing?s ever seen Lighting undiscovered places no one?s ever been Hope for the future Hope for the future Hope for the future Think that's right anyway. Not quite sure about the "how fast can we achieve" line. Also I take it that "Hope" is the title based on the credits at 2:31
Thanks for the lyrics! One little correction, I think it's: Hope shines brightest in the dark
Thanks for correction. I also have to agree with Bruce and yourself that these are some pretty poor cliche-ridden lyrics though. Nothing remotely creative or unpredictable there at all. Musically there's plenty to commend it but I can't think of many McCartney lyrics he seems to have put less effort into than these. Obviously Freedom, but I can't think of much else...

I think this sounds epic... I loved it the first time I heard it and each time is better than the last!! Sorry Bruce I disagree with your assessment of the lyrics... what do we have in life and how can we go on, if we don't have Hope? Love the bridges to the sky and flying up to the light and I love it at the end when it goes to the twinkling stars, so so beautiful. Paul is indeed a genius how he is able to make such beautiful music...
All I would say is when I criticise the lyrics I am not saying Paul is wrong to write a song about Hope. I just want something creative and worthy of his talents. It's all cliche. All predictable, and therefore without substance and not any real hope at all. "Hope of Deliverance" on the other hand seems to me a far more genuine lyric that comes from the heart. I just don't like the way he produced that song. With this one though it's the other way round: good production but lazy lyrics.

Another article on the project: http://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2014/09/listen-to-paul-mccartneys-new-video-game-soundtrac.html?utm_source=PMNL&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=140912 It notes some critical backlash for the "schmaltz" of the song's lyrics, while the music and orchestration are praised.

well, some negative about this song or cheesy lyrics, what do u expect? It's a song for the kids game!
-
Funny, I quite like the lyrics.
-
I think the lyrics are perfect. I think people like to nitpick just for the fun of it, even when there's nothing to nitpick about. Crazy.

I agree. It's clearly not a major project, and it's for a kids video game (as Snufkin said), so he's hardly going to make the lyrics complex. I think the song is fine. It won't set the world on fire, but there's nothing wrong with it.

It's not a "kids" game. The "T" on the Destiny game only serves as a warning to parents who want to know the level of violence/sex etc. on the game, and what minimal age the game is appropriate for. It doesn't mean the game is ONLY for teens. It just means teens and up. And in fact, the gamers I know are in their teens, 20s, 30s, 40s. Destiny is not just a "teen" game. I think the negative reviews are mostly because of the cheesy cliched lyrics. The fact that it's a video game means, I think, that a lot of reviewers hoped Paul would have more fun with the track. Be weird with it. Be McCartney II weird with it. But Paul didn't seem to have any fun with it at all and the song sounds serious and message-y. These lyrics are every bit what Paul's worst critics expected to get from Paul and that's the problem. Not that it's a bad song but I wish he'd taken the opportunity to let loose, and produce something funnier, something that surprised, and something more fun.

But funnier wouldn't work with the theme of this game. As you said it's not a kids game.

Does that mean it's a game for big kids? I do know what you mean though. He doesn't seem to be trying too hard, but I don't mind the lyrics, they're ok - but then I like the Pipes of Peace album, so may not be the best judge of these things.

favoritething:
There's a touch of "Once Upon A Long Ago" with the orchestral sweep of it, with a splash of "Lion King"-type swelling drums. Very effective. (But grammar alert: "Heavenly lights surrounding you and I"? No: "you and me." It would be correct to say, "You and I are surrounded by heavenly lights," but "I" cannot be the object of a sentence. Common mistake. All for the sake of the rhyme, I know. Please return to enjoying the song.)
It does sort of jump out at you, doesn't it? I hate when people say "I" when it should be "me". People who give us the news do it all the time...as do politicians, among others. I usually talk to the TV to tell them about their mistake! ops: :

When it comes to Paul, 'critics' are waiting just to describe this or that song as being schmaltzy, too sentimental...or just another of his silly love songs. They have one or more of those descriptions at the ready before they begin to write anything. It's sort of become a given.
-
Well, I quite like it. Particularly the vocal in the 'hope shines brightest in the dark' part - which, for me, is one of his best singing performances in a good few years. It's always the fans who like to moan the most (he says with peace and love).

If it's good enough for T.S. Eliot.

Given the fact that Paul has never written for a video game before, I don't think people had any preconceived notions for what the song would sound like. Now that we know it's a song that plays over the end credits of a game in which you fight to save humanity, I don't think a "trippy" song would have worked at all.

Yes, I totally agree. Plus, you would hear this song only after "beating" the game, after much effort, so it's meant to affirm your triumphant feeling, basking in the afterglow, as it were.

I feel as though Paul has given us a solid amount of experimental, surprising music over the past few years. He's been prolific. This song simply reflects another side of his work. It's a huge, epic ballad. Commercial, lyrically simple and positive, and strikingly beautiful. I'm still loving it.
