The production on the CD is fine. When did everyone become experts on what "better" production is? As if a "punchier" kick drum would result in a big hit. Nonsense! A lot of McCartney's production of Wings stuff, like VENUS AND MARS and AT THE SPEED OF SOUND, was actually not that great, but the songs were. That's why they were hits. Giles Martin knows much more about production than me or anyone else on this forum.
People know what they like to hear. Just because most folks may not know how to run a mixing-board or utilize mixing software doesn't mean that they can't identify what's good production to their ears. In fact, that's precisely why labels hire producers for artists: To make records that will have mass appeal.

Was always rather mystified wondering exactly what George Martin did in the Abbey Road studios, for the Fabs. Some accounts make it sound almost like he was more responsible for their songs sounding good, than they were. It was interesting, intriguing, that Paul chose George's son Giles to work on "New." Kind of like mixing the different eras together (Paul sang he goes back so far "I'm in front of me").

Mass appeal and everyone liking what THEY like are two different things. Yes, people can like what they like, but to claim Giles Martin has no business producing just because THEY don't like it is ridiculous. I trust McCartney's judgment to hire the producers he did over someone here who just "likes what they like."

OK -- there, we agree.

Long time reader, first time poster. In short, New is a winner. Hits the mark. Hits the sweet spot. Sails right over the umpire?s hat. By track: Save Us ? Admittedly, underwhelming on the first listen of a live version off You Tube from a computer at work, the volume a pencil tip off zero. On the other hand, a complete treat on listening to the studio version, ears wrapped in headphones, no prying eyes able to see a hack right handed guitarist playing an imaginary (heavy) bass in his left hand. Great album opener. Alligator ? Whimsical. Can probably see this one on London Town. On My Way to Work ? Didn?t go ape on first listen. But it grew on me, attached itself. A veritable great ?album track?. Queenie Eye ? It?s ?Beatleish? quality has been mentioned once or twice or a hundred times. A rousing song, though. One of the best off the album. The ?sitting in an English garden? interlude (an inferior version, mind you), once done, kicks it off into another gear. The song keeps building. Not sure I would have release it as a single, given it contains so many layers it could confuse most people under twenty five. A wonderful song. Early Days - Don?t like the deeper, croaky McCartney voice as much as others, maybe because it is a none too subtle reminder he is getting older, or more to the point, that I am. This is one of the better ones from that style, however. Very pleasant song. Sung by the younger version, it could have fitted on the White Album. Can imagine this being sung in the black hills of somewhere or in a rocking chair on a porch overlooking the Cahulawassee River, under the watchful eye of a strange looking fellow called Lonnie. Appreciate ? Seems to have fans divided. Fears it was going to be another Pretty Little Head were quickly allayed. Love this. One of the best songs. Funky. Dreamy. That ?ahhhhhh? towards the end hit me instantly as something from Abbey Road. Someone already mentioned it being reminiscent of the harmony in Because. Spot on. A fan of the faint tingle of guitar in the opening seconds (left speaker). Candidate for the third single. New ? Knew New already. In one word, ?jaunty?. Hard to objectively know if it should have been the first single or not, given one already knows it was. Still, the best opening single since probably My Brave Face. Everybody Out There ? Listened to this under the same muffled conditions as Save Us. Not a good idea, but I already knew that. Succumbed to temptation. The studio version is much better than the live version. Don?t think it is ever going to be the big concert pleaser it may be dressing up as, but a good song, nevertheless. A great last thirty seconds or so, in particular. Stirring at times. Hosanna ? Repeated listening has done nothing to lift this above average. Hyped. Disappointing. The screech from dropping a hammer on a big toe carries more melody. As many twists and turns as a laneway. It is the weakest track from the listed set, albeit the only weak track. (* but knowing me, it is possible I could change my opinion slightly over the next couple of weeks) I Can Bet ? Love it. Melodious. Infectious. Hooked me in by the mouth and tickled my tonsils the second I heard the chorus. Then again, coming off Hosanna, perhaps even Loup would have had me dancing in my jocks with a spoon for a mike. I Can Bet brings me back to Tug of War, even if the ?synth solo? reminds me of something off a B-side back in the mid-70?s. Another candidate for a single release. Looking At Her ? Got worried after listening to the first bit, but again it reeled me in (not quite to the tonsils) with the scratchy ?I?m Losing My Mind.? The lyrics have a slight propensity to onset the cringe factor (?wine? and ?refined?), but overall this is a very, very good song. Road ? Wants to be an epic. Not huge on this style, but this is one of Paul?s better outputs from the genre. Tramps all over House of Wax. Might just be me, but I can hear shades of U2 in bits. Not sure about the clunky bits which separate the verses, but all up, this song gets a tick to its name. Turned Out ? Called out already by many as ?Georgeish? and ?Wilburish?, and certainly could have found a home quite comfortably on Cloud Nine. Catchy. Dripping in melody. Wonderful. Should?ve been on the album proper, if not as a replacement, an addition. Get Me Out of Here ? Yeah, Blues. Fun Blues. Liked it at first glance. Should have been on the album. A real winner. Hmm, wonder what song it could have replaced?. Scared ? sounds like a boil lanced off Chaos and Creation. Not really getting into this one. Too harsh to suggest it should have stayed a hidden track? (and again, my view could soften) In conclusion: Best balanced album since Tug of War. Only things missing (apart from the absence of Hosanna): One of those rockers where his voice soars to the raspy high octane heights of Oh! Darling, She?s a Woman, Oh Woman Oh Why, I?ve Got a Feeling, Call Me Back Again, etc (and, yes, I know he is 71, and hasn?t really unleashed one of these for decades)? and a crisp ballad. All in all: A-

Wow. This track by track review so totally expresses my own opinion. I could have basically written/said the same things. I did add "'turned Out' to the album proper, right after "Everybody Out There", to have a bit more energy before 'Hosanna". That one I could end up editing out. I'm wanting to like it and maybe I will. I'm warming to it a bit and feel it adds variety to the album. Just needs melody. How Paul could not come up with a great melody for the words if baffling. Maybe I'm influenced by reading what Paul Epworth said about it months ago...being so gorgeous. I'm still waiting for the gorgeous part. Overall, the strongest album Paul has done in the past 30 years at least.

Okay, I'm gonna stick my neck out. I'm sure the production of New is great, but unfortunately the mastering is so bad (to my ears, anyway) I just can't enjoy it. It all comes down to the fact it's been mastered with lots of compression and so has very little dynamic range. This is understandable as most pop+rock these days is "mastered for the car" rather than for home listening, but I can't get on with it. Still, I'm hopeful that an uncompressed remaster may be released in the future as Paul did recently on a few of his classic albums.

Fly Paul Fly - A Swans man, I see. I am a Collingwood man myself. (The Beatles of the AFL). Not a great year for the "flaming Pies". Next year. Beatles4Ever - Don't know if you are a Seinfeld man, but perhaps Epworth's description of Hosanna as "gorgeous" was akin to the doctor calling the Ugly Baby "breathtaking".

This album is really growing on me. It's been in the car and my ipod non-stop (well, also the new Goldfrapp album "Tales of Us" has been getting a spin too) I'm a long time McCartney fan and collector and I have to say "Memory Almost Full" and "Driving Rain" were very disappointing for me. "New" however really does pack a punch. I love the fact the songs are so different from each other. "I Can Bet" is my favorite so far... it's clocked up the most plays on the ipod. I listened to it over and over at Melbourne airport the other day. I got a few strange looks when I started singing along.... I was in my own little world. I love the line "I what I'm going to next I'll leave entirely to your imagination".... this song needs to be the next single, the lyrics could lead to an interesting video clip. Would be a great rocker live too. I played it for my brother and his comment was "now that's more like it" "Appreciate" has also got me hooked. Interesting layered vocals, I keep coming back to this one too. "Everybody Out There" sounds like it comes from "Off The Ground". It's a great little track. I also like "Looking At Her"... probably because it follows on from "I Can Bet", but it is a good track. Now we just need Paul to come to Australia and play some of album live for us. Ian

Probably! (I did love Seinfeld...and the comment.) Actually, I got the wrong producer making the "comment". It was Ethan Johns, not Epworth!

Guest Post: Lauren Reviews...New http://www.twistandshout60s.com/2013/10/guest-post-lauren-reviewsnew.html 1. Save Us "It sounds like a Foo Fighters song to me. I'm sorry, but it does." 2. Alligator "It's alright. I don't get why it's called 'alligator' though. Does it mention alligators in it? Is alligator a euphemism?" 3. On My Way To Work "It's a grower. I like this one! I like that middle bit. I had it on three times before my interview. Didn't get the job." 4. Queenie Eye "I didn't like this one at first but it's really grown on me. It's alright cos you can go like this..." *dances* 5. Early Day "You know my feelings on this. Get it off." 6. New "Well, I go through stages with this one. I really liked it, then I got sick of listening to it, but I'm really enjoying it again now." 7. Appreciate "I like it. It's really different. I thought it might be a bit embarrassing for him but it's worked out well." 8. Everybody Out There "I really don't know how I feel about this song. I can tolerate it." 9. Hosanna "I'm not one for slow songs but I do quite like this. It's not piano slow. I don't like slow piano songs." 10. I Can Bet "Best song on the album cos I can do my Saturday Night Fever dance to it. It's a bit cheesy 80's and cheesy 80's always wins. It makes me happy." 11. Looking At Her "I like parts of this song and I dislike other parts. It's quite a chilled out song. Actually I like it all." 12. Road "I don't remember this one. The piano bit sounds a bit creepy. Like cartoon creepy walk." 13. Turned Out (bonus track) "Not Fussed either way. It's good for doing hand dances to. It's quite a jolly song. Sounds a bit like pop from when I was young but I like that." 14. Get Me Out Of Here (bonus track) "It's a bit countryfied. I want to be sat on my porch with my shotgun and a stick of grass hanging out of my mouth." 15. Scared (bonus track) "It's crap. It's a bit depressing. Does it get any better? No? Then it's not a winner."

Here are some of my thoughts on Paul?s NEW record. I haven?t read any reviews or the preceding pages in this thread. I?ll go through this thread and see what everyone else thought of NEW, then I`ll check out some reviews. It?s a great rock record, and it really is, for me, the best since Venus and Mars. The majority of these songs could be released as a single and would do well. The first time I heard the CD my reaction was: Is this really Paul McCartney. It sounds so different from anything he?s done. It also needs to be played at high volume in the car. 1.Save Us ?Love the sound of this song, very edgy. This would make a great opener in concert or slot it number two and follow it with Jet. A possible single release. It?s got a good hook. 2.Alligator ?Bonus points for getting the word alligator into a song. Love the middle section. Very 60s. Another Nancy song. 3.On My Way To Work ?SPD Delivery. Somehow I can imagine Paul actually doing this. Another song with a great instrumental break. 4.Queenie Eye ?Love all the use of O.U.T. words. The O.U.T. spells out lyric, I wonder if Paul remembers Christmas Time (Is Here Again). 5.Early Days ?Love the vocals for this song. So very real. First thought as I heard this was these are first take vocals, which was confirmed on the Bang & Olufson interview. He paints a great picture with the line: Dressed in black from head to toe/ Two guitars across our backs. Love the acoustic guitar. Memories versus research, good one Paul. 6.New ?A very upbeat song for Nancy. Love it. You came along and made my life a song. Great lyric. Very Beatley. Love the brass section. 7.Appreciate ?Dance mix anyone. Someone should create a dance mix for this. The elements are all there. Another good single release. 8.Everybody Out There ?Another single release. A good concert opener. Seems to make sense. Reminds me a bit of Hope of Deliverance with the all acoustic guitars. Nice message song: Do some good before you say goodbye. 9.Hosanna ?Love the use of tape loops. Another love song for Nancy? Seems to point that way for me. Very nice melody and lyrics. He seems so vulnerable in this song. Nice to hear. An outstanding track. 10.I Can Bet ?This has to be a single at some point. There are so many hooks in this song. A great beat, and would sound great live. 11.Looking At Her ?Another Nancy song. She takes a great picture and to me seems to draw your eyes away from Paul to her. Another great vocal performance during the verses. He does something with his voice that?s really unique on the ?her? in the verses. 12.Road ?The thing I thought of when I first read the lyrics was the story of the Beatles trying to stay warm in van on a trip back to Liverpool from London, when the windshield broke and let the cold winter air in. The Beatles stayed warm by lying on top of each other. A Beatle sandwich. This is that lost gem of a song that I always rediscover on a McCartney many years later. 13.Turned Out ?Nice slide guitar work on this track. Reminds me of Harrison?s guitar sound. Very nice. The piano outro is very nice too 14.Get Me Out Of Here ?Did Paul watch I?m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here? A fun song. It reminds of a Robert Johnson styled song, but instead of a hellhound coming after him it?s the taxman. Getting tired of paying taxes, Paul. Aren?t we all. Nice blues song and great guitar work from Paul. 15.Scared ?Paul should open up more and write first person songs. Another stand out performance, lyrics, vocals and piano. 16.Struggle ?Glad I got this one on youtube, and didn?t get mail order from Japan. I didn?t like this song the first half dozen times I heard it. It?s growing on me. But I prefer any song from Electric Arguments over this one. Is this a preview of the next project?

West Coast Eagles I mentioned Buddy (still cant believe GWS missed on his signing!) and Kennedy (the Eagles forward) in reference to your "sailing over the goal umpires hat" which I liked. Interesting fact is Paul McCartney has worn an Eagles Guernsey, onstage in 1993 when he last performed here in Perth He may have done the same for Collingwood had he toured here in 90/91 and indeed Eddie McGuire would have got him into a Pies jumper had Macca delievered on his 2002 gig :

Ahh, that Josh Kennedy.... That was a debacle in 2002. Mind you, Colonial Stadium (I think that is what it was called back then) is not the greatest venue. Can't beat the MCG. Went to both those gigs in '93. Three rows from the front the second time... Eddie is so big he probably thinks Paul will be presenting him with his Sergeant Pepper jacket....

I seem to have a habit of liking songs from various albums which seem to be the least liked songs from those albums (by other pm.com members),,,LOL For example, I like 'Motor of Love' (Flowers in the Dirt), 'Freedom' (Driving Rain) and now 'Scared from New...LOL

I like it! Might end up being Shane Watson's theme song.
