New - Track-by-track thoughts

Give it a chance. Give it a few more listens, and hopefully (I'm sure!) the songs will connect with you.
I agree, all Paul's albums have always been "growers", it takes a little while for them to seep into your psyche. Better that way round than instant "Old Grey Whistle" pop hits that begin to grate after a few listens. With mp3 player-fulls of tracks and shuffle play I find modern day listeners don't apply themselves to an album in the manner we did when we had a vinyl copy, only one place to listen - at home where the record player was - and years between album releases. I accept it's a challenge these days when one mp3 player can carry an artists complete discography to shuffle.... Martin

Just listened to Alligator for the first time - wow!

this album is super best tracks for me: 'save us', 'queenie eye', 'new', 'appreciate', 'everybody out there', 'i can bet' (with that nicely blended-in disco-esque riff ), 'turned out' and 'scared'. very pleased with the tempo of 'everybody out there' on the album versus the live versions thus far hope when he does it live henceforth, the tempo will be the album tempo thank you Sir Paul (and band and producers) for making this album you are amazing as always

I think is his best production since Flaming pie, I love almost all the songs! The only sad thing for me is that I can't believe "Turned out", one of my favorite, is not part of the official album. It's kind of frustrating. Despite that, is new, kind of different, young and a very fresh album. 5 stars, definitely.

I can't stop loving this album! My only complaint? It's too short!!!!!!!!!!

This is a very coherent album flows lovely I like it from the beginning to the end. Its like McCartney 11 and Electric Arguments have been filtered through the mixing desk to come up with something that sounds experimental but more polished and finished off than they are . I like the funky and sexy "Appreciate" pity Marvin Gaye is no longer with us this song would have suited him down to the ground . Save Us , Queenie Eye , Hosanna , Alligator and the SPOOKY "Road" I really love . Like David Bowie's The Next Day from earlier this year Paul proves with NEW there's still a lot of life left in these old dogs

One of the best solo albums released by any of the 4 former Beatles.

I love the album but one thing it isn`t is coherent. You can tell there are 4 different producers at work here, the weakest being Giles Martin with all the filler tracks ON MY WAY, I CAN BET and LOOKING AT HER. My favourites are ROAD, ALLIGATOR, SAVE US AND QUEENIE EYE. Funny that DRIVING RAIN hasn`t been mentioned so far, because that was a brilliant album widely ignored by the record buying public. And in terms of refreshing the typical Macca sound it probably is more similiar to NEW than any other Paul album. Also it rocked just like NEW does.

"I Can Bet" imo is one of the top four songs on the album, along with "New" , "Queenie Eye" , and "Save Us" . I'm not sure what my running order is with those three, but I think "I Can Bet " is the most obvious next single on the album - cracking chorus... Apart from the songs mentioned, I'm not sure if there is a song on this album as good as "From A Lover To A Friend" , "Fine Line" , "Mr . Bellamy" or " I Want to Come Home". It is early days though, and my only my opinion. Speaking of "Early Days", the song reminds me of "The Songs we were singing". Love the lyric "there but for the grace of god go you and I - do some good before you say goodbye " from "Everybody Out There". Very poignant My early impression is that Paul Epworth's overall production is the most effective and impressive. Good drummer too... Paul is on a hiding to nothing. If the new sounds are "edgy" , he is accused of trying to hard.If He sticks to tried and tested methods, he is accused of not trying hard enough .... jeez ! Finally , at 71 - his voice is great. Very little evidence of autotune here, and some fragile moments, but apparently Ethan Johns for one was using first takes! Can people just accept that his voice is not the same as it was when he was 25 ? How could it possibly be? Unlike other guys his age , Paul actually works hard , and performs constantly . Wear and tear is inevitible , and on this album , he still manages some wonderful vocals - (not least the soaring notes on Alligator) These are my initial (disjointed) thoughts . They may evolve !

Well, I'm a tad underwhelmed. New is a combination of Chaos and Creation and Memory Almost Full. Queenie Eye is simply superb; New is really, really good; Save Us rocks a bit; and I Can Bet is a Wings-like rocker. Unfortunately, some of the tunes just don't do it for me; Road goes on forever; Hosanna is tedious; and Early Days and On My Way To Work are just boring. The other tunes are simply okay. Oh well. The early reviews got me excited; but this happened before when they went crazy over Chaos, which I didn't care for very much. I REALLY loved MAF and still play it almost weekly. I give NEW a solid B-, but was praying for an A.
I could not have put it better myself.......................i feel a little sad as I was so looking forward to this...............

I'll do a song by song review later on, this really is a fantastic album! I think I could start a thread for every song!

It's perplexing, dismaying to read that a few are underwhelmed by the New album. I read once (not here) that someone found the Flaming Pie album just a big bore and wondered about their soul, sense and sensibilities...perhaps they'd just not given the songs a chance to grow on them. Which they would have done, spectacularly, I think. It's not such a bad thing for an album to provoke such different, opposite reactions--that can augment the mystery, make you wonder about it more. Want to hear it yourself, even more

I think the album is fantastic, "Album of the Year" for me easily and perhaps Paul's strongest since Flaming Pie!
-
Loving Appreciate, very sexy, totally different direction for Paul. Wouldn't have thought this was Giles Martin? Alligator is fantastic, great vocals. Hosanna very Chaos style. Stunningly beautiful. Very Poignant. Love It. Gorgeous tape loops. I think this is my favourite. Need to listen again for some further thoughts.

PS Road is absolutely fantastic, sort of brooding, fireman style. Very atmospheric.
-
Turned Out. Melodic and catchy. Pop sweetness..
-
The thing is...and perhaps this is true for all his albums...his albums have been hyped up so much it appears that the current album is a little underwhelming...however his albums age very well. MAF and EA after 6 and 5 years respectively, are great albums! Thus they are growers to some ears.

I have more where that came from. Paul has pot holes in his road.
