Hi all, I'm just about to start my second listen of the New CD, and I thought I might post my thoughts on each track as I hear them to start off a track-by-track discussion. Cheers, Andrew.
Andrew, Thanks for an absolute great post. You should be a music critic. You would be a breath of fresh air...someone who actually listens to all the songs and is objective. You have got me really excited about this album. If "Everybody Out There" is one of the weakest tracks, then this is a very good CD. PS. I actually like "Off the Ground". Granted the production could have been better but there are several really good songs in my opinion. To each his own
Hi BJ, Thanks very much for your kind words. I hope you enjoy the album as much as I do! I've got it on repeat again, and "Everybody Out There" happens to be on again at the moment. It's really grown on me actually (as have all the others that I wasn't QUITE as keen on), so my list of "weakest tracks" is probably only one song long now - just "On My Way to Work", which I like a lot more than I did at first. By the way, I didn't mean to be rude about "Off The Ground". I rather liked it at the time, and it has happy associations for me because the 1993 tour was the only time I've ever seen Paul live (because I live in Australia and he has only toured here once in my lifetime). There are some tracks on it that I love, and others that I think are pretty good, but I just can't get over "Peace In The Neighbourhood", which I would rank as one of his worst lyrics ever,. I can remember people flocking out to buy drinks each time he sang it (I went to two concerts).

Yes, I did find your review interesting, since I've not heard any of these, really, and your well thought-out opinions added to the mystery of wondering what these sound like and are about.
Thanks, Susy!

Having listened to the complete album....not sure how you have a copy of it already, ...I'm curious as to which producer, in your opinion, made the biggest impression. They must have different styles; (Johns more stripped down.) The Epworth songs, based on 'Queenie Eye' in its entirety and the snippets of the other two, give me the impression that he might be the more adventurous. (Road sounds a bit epic!!) Thoughts??? I noticed he co-wrote the three songs he produced on the album, had Paul had him produce the whole album...it no doubt would have been completely different...but then that could be said about the other producers as well. I wonder if each producer viewed the project as some sort of competition...who could be/do the best!!! :
Hi Beatles4Ever&Ever, Fantastic question. I'll have to list the songs by producer before I can get my head around that one. Here is the list. The letter in brackets is my personal rating compared to the other songs on this album (where "A" means it's one of the best, "C" means it's one of the worst, and "B" means it's neither one of the best nor one of the worst...all just in my opinion, of course)... Epworth - Save Us (A) - Queenie Eye (A) - Road (A) Ronson - Alligator (A) - New (A) Martin - On My Way To Work (C) - Appreciate (A) - Everybody Out There (B) - I Can Bet (A) - Looking At Her (A) Johns - Early Days (B) - Hosanna (A) So, it looks like, on average, I appreciated Paul Epworth's and Mark Ronson's work the best (they both have straight A records). However, I'm not sure how meaningful this is, for a few reasons: 1. Giles Martin also has 3 "A" tracks (as many as Paul Epworth and one more than Mark Ronson). 2. Mark Ronson produced at least one more track that didn't make the album, so I don't know what rating that would have got. 3. Ultimately, the ratings above are partly about the production and partly about the songs that Paul brought to the party. So, if I had to choose one producer for the album, it would be VERY tough...so I can see why Paul didn't!

Good thoughts mate! I'm just going through listening properly after listening to the songs that grabbed me first last night. Seems a really good album!
Thanks, Chriska!

i'm on my 2nd listen right now, and usually have about 5 or 6 listens before forming deep opinions (i know from the past things ive not liked much on first few listens become faves after a week!).... but on 2 listens my faves are hosanna, save us, appreciate, queenie eye. There's a couple im a bit meh on, but i'm sure that'll change
The three you mentioned are all great, and the rest are definitely growers!

So what's the packaging like for both editions on CD?
I got the Deluxe CD. It opens gatefold style with 2 full pages of liner notes by Paul, and it's addressed to YOU! Some black and white pics (you've already seen some on the site) in the middle booklet pages, with very detailed notes re: each track and of course, lyrics as well. It's not a plastic CD case but the thick cardboard stuff. And Paul sounds ENERGISED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey moptops! Your description sounds the same as the standard edition, though I'm sure I read something that suggested there was some difference other than the colour of the cover. Are there two folds in the cardboard, or just the one (like the standard)?

.not sure how you have a copy of it already,
The album NEW was offically released for download via iTunes Australia and iTunes New Zealand on Thursday 10th October. Obviously some very happy fans in that region I wonder if the choice has something to do with chart reporting weeks - are they different in that region? In the UK we do Monday - Saturday which is why our release date is Monday 14th. Martin
Hi Martin, Yeah, I think that's the reason!

I heard the album once in a car with people who were talking over it The teaser link is just making me crazy http://www.allmusic.com/album/new-mw0002578565 Especially when people on here, are praising songs that I don't have yet!! This is so GREAT!!! Love that Paul is doing all of these promotions too! YAY
Hope you enjoy it!!!!

Maybe it was released a few days earlier here in Oz as some form of tokenism to compensate for the fact he hasnt played here since '93! Get here Macca!
It hardly makes up for DrivingOzGate, but I'm over that now... I think. In all seriousness, though, I think most of our major album releases (regardless of artist) are the Friday before the worldwide release date. I think they sometimes used to be the Friday after, but the availability of overseas CDs on the internet has killed that silly idea thankfully.

Fly Paul Fly to Australia:
New is a master work and yes I am an Aussie. I hear the best of Tug of War, McCartney 2 and Flaming Pie on this fresh and interesting sounding album. Do not miss this album!!!!!!
Quoted for truth!

I can remember people ****ing out to buy drinks each time he sang it (I went to two concerts).
How odd! I definitely didn't swear in this post, but the system has inserted the "****". The word was "f l o c k ing" (I just checked) - you know, like a flock of birds? When I first saw the above, I thought that maybe I'd meant to write "walking" and that there had been a typo involving an "n", but the "n" key isn't even next to the "l" key, so that was always unlikely! How odd! I've even Googled this word but I can't find a "rude" meaning. Any ideas why this happened? P.S. Edit: Why is it that flock is ok, but flocking isn't?

Not just iTunes, but we've also had (both) the CD's in store too.

I haven't got the standard, I think that has a more red cover. Mine is the deluxe with the blue cover. The CD opens with 2 folds, one on the left, and one on the right, and both these pages contain Paul's liner notes.

In 93 Paul actually took over the radio station in Perth, Australia loves Paul it was the press and a few other disappointed fans who still love him but sacrificed more that he who wore the ring in Help to get tickets to a show we hope returns, Paul is better than ever and we are confident that he will take our country by storm and rock one and all

I love "Off the Ground"--it's got quite a different production sound from his other works, was recorded at his home studio (in Scotland, I think?) where he felt at home and cozy and very happy, and that shows. I appreciate "Peace in the Neighborhood" for its wonderful over all sound (would have changed a couple of lines here and there) and its (to me) understated subtext of a "pink" or "socialist" subtle theme that some live in mansions, some in the ghetto, and everybody ought to get to have a decent place to live. I hope Paul tours Oz! Y'all have got me praying that, I would love to experience that vicariously, you love him so much

OTG was recorded at Hog Hill (Paul's private studio in East Sussex) where parts of the 'New' album was recorded but I think you are right Suzy, Paul did feel comfortable not having to work in a commercial studio.

Thanks, right after I wrote that I thought "or it could have been at his English place"

Like most of us in the US, I won't have the album until this Tuesday. On my local Breakfast with the Beatles radio Show this morning (Andre Gardner - Philadelphia), I heard studio versions of Queenie Eye and Save Us for the 1st time. They both sounded very good on the radio. I thought that Queenie Eye sounded so much better than what I heard off the internet. Lots going on musically on Queenie. To me, it sounds like something that could have fit well on Seargent Pepper. I think it will be a great album cut (not a commercial pop song like the title cut). It's the really good album cuts that give an album substance and I hope there are a bunch of them on NEW. I also liked the studio version of Save Us. Great rocker and should be a teriffic album opener. Can't wait for Tuesday. I'm an album type of guy. I especially like listening to a CD in the car with a good sound system. The key for me will be how the songs jell together. In Paul's past good albums, I could hardly pick a favorite as I liked so many of the songs and the favorites change with repeated listens. I'm hoping that "NEW" gives me a similar experience.

Well, I'm a tad underwhelmed. New is a combination of Chaos and Creation and Memory Almost Full. Queenie Eye is simply superb; New is really, really good; Save Us rocks a bit; and I Can Bet is a Wings-like rocker. Unfortunately, some of the tunes just don't do it for me; Road goes on forever; Hosanna is tedious; and Early Days and On My Way To Work are just boring. The other tunes are simply okay. Oh well. The early reviews got me excited; but this happened before when they went crazy over Chaos, which I didn't care for very much. I REALLY loved MAF and still play it almost weekly. I give NEW a solid B-, but was praying for an A.

Give it a chance. Give it a few more listens, and hopefully (I'm sure!) the songs will connect with you.
