Did Paul's Voice Really Change?

"The peak of his prime!" I agree! (I should have said 1964-1976 was his prime.)

Yep...Wings era

His voice on Wings Over America is his best/his peak, IMO.

Everybody's voice changes with age. Its an unfortunate fact of life. Why bring it up? :

Why not? There's nothing wrong with bringing it up, it's a very interesting subject to talk about. Nobody is putting him down for being human. I'm totally fascinated with the changes he has gone through. I have found that it is not just his voice that's changed, but in 72 years you're bound to go through a lot of changes physically and mentally. I guess he is just one of the few people where we, the public, get to see a 52year change since he first became famous. You only have to listen to this:
then this: To spot the difference. But, no matter what anyone says, it is Paul, and everyone here on the maccaboard loves him. -
Well said, Rupert!

Paul's voice is certainly not what it once was. I think the negative changes outweigh the positive ones, but still, there are some good things that came from his change in voice. The most prominent feature is that his smooth, young voice wouldn't have worked for a song like Early Days, where I pocture an old man singing to his grandchildren about his life. The voice was old, weathered, time worn, and I LOVED it. It showed the vulnerability that he also was trying to convey in his songwriting. That song, as well as You Tell Me, also show that he can still sing in the high registers. And though I'll admit there are people who say that he shouldn't sing high anymore because it doesn't sound good, I would have to disagree. Yes his voice has aged, but it has aged well

That particulare sentence makes me shiver. But i suppose i'm the kind of fan who'd prefer to hear yesterday sung by him with a flue instead of the best Kate Perry's version As to his ability of being still able to get the high notes i really don't get what the point is since Paul is singing a lot of beatles song in the original key. Oh well, of course his voice has changed. But he's doing much better now than 4 years ago.

Sounded just fine at Petco Park last night. Better than fine actually!

He is not singing better now than 5 or 10 years ago, certainly not better than 20 years ago. He is singing well for his age and the songs he sings, given they are in a high register because he was a natural tenor when he was young. His voice is just going to get older, not younger. It's the natural order of things. It is up to him whether he wants to sing in public until it gets to be too much, or change certain things to keep going longer, like changing the keys of songs, and not singing things like Helter Skelter, which can be brutal on anyone's voice. I think things like "New" sound good now because it fits his voice and he still can sing that type of song well. But trying to belt out Long Tall Sally in the original key, while very cool and fans REALLY want to hear it for nostalgic reasons, really does not sound good nor is it good for his vocal chords. Maybe, at this point, he could care less and just wants to have fun. And what's wrong with that? I'd like to know!

Of course it changed!!! he's 72 and is not Glenn Hughes!! The first "dramatic" voice change I perceive is around 1983, in PoP. Comparing with ToW, his voice doesn't sound like a canary anymore, is a little deeper. Compare Wanderlust with any PoP's song and tell me if you can hear that difference. Another comparison: Lucille's 1979 version (Kampuchea) vs Lucille's version from CHOBA CCCP. I know it has another tempo and is essentially different, but don't you feel his voice got deeper? specially in the chorus, when he tries to reach the higher tone (I asked my friends about her but all their lips were tight) Is curious... how many songs did Paul sing in high tones during the 80's? The pound is sinking? Figure of eight? any other? I don't count So Bad because is sung in, how do I say it... falsetto? is that the right word? in fact, he reaches his limit in Figure of Eight, and is a little lower than, I don't know, Old Siam Sir. I feel another voice change in Flaming Pie. I don't know if is real or is a sensation, but I feel his voice is more nasal in this time. In the song Flaming Pie, in The World Tonight, in Heaven On a Sunday... Anyway, I think this: during the 70's he was one of the best singers in the world. After 1982 he lost his magic touch and got a deeper voice. And it's rare, because a like his voice in Back To The World Tour more than in Tripping The Live Fantastic (which I think his voice was really bad... Jet and Band On The Round sound horrible!!).

Who is Glenn Hughes?

He never lost his magic touch and that's exactly what's so special about him

You probably are talking about this guy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glenn_Hughes And not the guy who was the original biker in The Village People.

I think he sounds better now than he did 4 or 5 years ago. When I saw him in 2010 and 2011 his voice sounded rougher than last year. It has improved over the last year or so, but no where near what he was capable of in his prime.

Fair enough. But is he not a better singer at 72 than he was at 52. That's all I'm saying. Given his age, he sounds pretty good!

Hehehe that's true!! but I'm talking about his voice, just that I think his last great vocal performance was in Wanderlust, or maybe in No more lonely nights... that doesn't mean he became a bad singer after that... in fact, i think that Flaming Pie has a great vocal execution in every track, but in a different way. About Hughes, he's the only one who keeps singing just like in the 70's (or almost). His throat is a miracle, because he's a metal/hard rock singer since he was young.

Being an avid Paul listener, I have noticed the change in his vocals, but I don't think it is necessarily bad. He doesn't have the vocal range of his Beatles and Wings days, but I'm starting to grow accustomed to his more bass sound. I still think he is a brilliant singer and that won't change. --------------------------------------------------------- R.I.P John Lennon 1940-1980 R.I.P George Harrison 1943-2001
