Hadn't really thought of it that way, but I like your train of thought. I've always enjoyed RDR - especially his version of Lonesome Town.
Took me a while to warm up to his version of that song. Didn't care for the falsetto at first, but like he said.....Rickey Nelson's straight-on version could not be improved on, so something different was needed. Love that entire album Paul was in great voice, his originals fit perfectly with the cover songs....and absolutely loved "No Other Baby"! I was totally unfamiliar with the song prior to Paul singing it, and it is one of my favorite "Paul" songs!!! The band Paul put together for that album was...well, could not have been any better. I did want Gilmour to have a bit more showy guitar parts, but he was great nevertheless!!
Yes, best band he could have had. I was surprised that David Gilmour could do this style so well; he certainly hadn't done anything like it in decades!

As I've said on here before ( a while back, and I have no idea in what thread), I've always regarded Flaming Pie, Run Devil Run and Driving Rain as a trilogy dealing with Linda's illness, death and Paul's process of recovering and reengaging with life. RDR is simultaneously a great rock 'n' roll album and a musical walking tour of the stages of grieving. If any one doubts that, just compare Paul's version of No Other Baby with the original:
I totally get that. "Somedays," "No Other Baby" and "From A Lover to Friend" tie them together the most.
-
I was very disappointed with driving rain and it's toward the bottom of Paul albums for me so I have trouble tying it to the other two which I love.
-
Driving Rain is a flawed, but worthy, return-to-form. Too many tracks and a few lines that begged for a re-write.
-
Well, I think he was in love with Heather when he made 'Driving Rain', right? I don't think it can be part of the same category. FP and RDR express pain and strength, DR means that Heather lighted a new flame in Macca
-
That's what makes "From A Lover To A Friend" significant. And on top of that, "Magic" is unquestionably about Linda.

I love the way "She Said Yeah" just bursts out of the speakers. KOTB was fine, and so was CHOBA B CCCP, but this album blows them away.
Yep, that song is a beauty. Can't believe I have not listened to this album for years and years. I haven't really got into Kisses on the Bottom, even though I quite like the style of the songs and the sentiment. Might be the lack of a musical instrument in Paul's hands. But Run Devil Run is good old fashioned raw stuff. It's getting a new lease of life on my car stereo.
-
Movie Magg has always been my favorite on that album. I don't know why. It's generally not my type of music, but Paul sings the hockey sticks out of it.

Let me guess, "1,2,3,4,5 Let's go for a drive" - lol. I really like DR but it could have used a some trimming. For example, "Rinse The Raindrops" needed 4-5 minutes cut from the song. I would have eliminated "Tiny Bubble", "Spinning On Axis" and never included "Freedom". The standouts songs to be were "About You" and Lonely Road".

"But Run Devil Run is good old fashioned raw stuff. It's getting a new lease of life on my car stereo." Would have love to see Mr. McCartney to have done a complete tour with the RDR band. Play the entire RDR record and then do a 10-15 Beatle/Wings song which IMO would have been a great concert.

"Driving Rain" reminds me of Wings "Wild Life", a new band, a new start, it's underworked, more like a jam session (or audition) than fine-tuned. I also hear both sorrow and optimism in it, both Linda and Heather. "Flaming Pie", "Run Devil Run" and "Driving Rain" documents a phaze perhaps, kind of like a trilogy. "Flaming Pie" is artistically the most successful to mye ears. "Run Devil Run" is a great rock & roll hommage, "Driving Rain" has unfinished (and disjointed) written all over it but not without merits.

WingsOfMacca:
Am I the only one who believes RDR is an extension of 'Flaming Pie'? I don't mean musically because FP has original songs and RDR has a lot of covers. I mean about Paul's moment in his life. When I hear FP I feel that Paul is preparing for the hardest punch in his life, and when I hear RDR I feel he's showing how strong he is. I heard a lot of artists talking about his admiration for this LP. He could made a soft-sad album about the things he lived with Linda, a kind of Off The Ground but with sad and tragic colors... songs like 'Somedays', 'Jenny Wren' and stuff like that. But instead he made a cover of 'No Other Baby' (one of the best covers I've ever heard, a song that made me cry the first time I heard it), 'Lonesome Town', an aggressive version of a sad feeling (the 'Run Devil Run' song)... come on, is amazing. If I lost my wife, the mother of my children, the woman who went with me for 30 years... I couldn't do something like that.
Bingo.

No way!!! I love 'Tiny Bubble' I don't like 'Freedom', but 'Lonely Road' is one of my favorites tracks of Macca's 21st century

Me too I love Tiny Bubble...one of my favourites of Driving Rain. In fact I love the whole album , my favourite of the 21st Century, only Spinning on an axis is the one I love less

Indeed! But I would add that "I'll be feeling blue" from 'Your Loving Flame' MUST go.

That whole song needs to go.

At the time, I thought: Wow! Paul has written a new "Maybe I'm Amazed." I think "Your Loving Flame" is an epic rock-ballad. And the video is vastly under-appreciated. Of course, for obvious reasons, this song is nowhere on Paul McCartney's radar anymore. However, the song made its public-debut a few years before Driving Rain was ever released, so I listen to the song with that in mind.

listened to RDR this morning. Got to say I really love the vocal on shake a Hand
-
Vocally, Macca was positively on fire the whole album.
