It's not just boardies. I shared this guy's YouTube vid the day after the SNL thing; it's got about 20,000 views. That's small potatoes in the grand scheme, but it's worth noting the following comments: ________________________________________________________________ "F-ck Paul McCartney can't sing worth a s**t anymore, makes me cringe whenever he gets behind a mic anymore. But he's old what the **** do you expect? ..." "My type of music is quality vocals this wasnt quality at all " "I am a big Beatle fan but this guy is spot on. A bad performance. I have noticed a bifg drop off in his vocals especially the past couple years. IMHO, it is from perfoming concerts alot. as you get older you need to rest your vocal chords. He played a full concert the night befor and I watched some of the videos, and while again a big decline from a few years back , most were pretty decent. so singers get sick or hoarse perhaps the performance should not have gone on or at least change to an easier song..." "You're 100% right. I thought the same thing. He sounded awful! And Steven Perry IS a GREAT singer. I agree with everything you said. I thought McCartney was trying to sound bad at first, but then realized he wasn't. He needs to retire, I think. Maybe he's been sick or something. Maybe I should give him the benefit of the doubt. But he shouldn't have been singing on TV." "PAUL MCCARTNEY STARTED OFF SINGING BAD BUT<HE PUT IT TOGETHER I THINK HE WAS GREAT HE HAS BEEN ILL ..." "Paul's over 70 years old, he doesn't have close to the same voice he used to. Up until, I'd say around the mid 90's, he had an absolutely incredibly voice with tremendous range. Listen to the original versions of 'Maybe I'm Amazed', 'Helter Skelter', 'Wanderlust', 'I'm Down', or 'Golden Slumbers' and you'll see the type of voice he had. But that's not the only thing that made him a great musician..." "I think his voice was hoarse from the concert the night before." "The song started out with him sounding rough - kind of old man quavery - but when he warmed and got to the hollering parts of the song he could still punch it. He is simply past the age where he should be performing - but he's 1/2 of The Beatles song-writing team (or 1/3rd if you count George Martin) and he had a solid career after them. He is a musical icon. He can still hit the hard notes, it's the lighter tones he's lost to a quaver." WOw ! ________________________________________________________ The point is this: Paul McCartney has been a musical idol of mine for many years now, and when casual fans start making observations like this, it's time to face some hard truths.Playing a concert the night before and then singing live on TV a song that is incredibly hard for anyone to sing much less a man in his 70's makes you wonder about his thought process. Like I said in another post, this is the one time he should have been "Beatle Paul "and sang a fairly easy Beatle tune.
_________________________________________________________ Yankeefan...exactly my thoughts. After doing a late 2 hour concert the night before, he should have done something easy like "All My Loving" where the Band is singing along with him. It's one of those songs that everyone likes to hear. I think one of the problems is that Paul doesn't have a "real" Manager where he has total trust...good or bad. Tony Bennett albeit 10 years older has the perfect manager...his son. I've seen the pair interviewed. Tony has total trust in his son. He knows his son really loves him and will always look out for his best interest. I heard Tony say that when it comes to his Son and his career, his son has the final say. If Tony was Paul's age, I doubt he would allowed him to sing MIA knowing the situation and if it was one of Tony's most difficult songs to sing. And you can't blame Paul's band. It is very hard to tell the boss what he should do. The worse part for me is that MIA is one of my favorite songs (out of so many). I love the original studio version. It is so hard for me and other true fans to see Paul struggling so much compared to his vocals from even 5-10 years ago. I know in his far more controlled concert settings he occasionally can nail it, but more times than not, he really struggles. I hate to hear people who never appreciated Paul's full talents and especially those who obviously hate Paul, revel in seeing Paul in embarrassing situations. Just a bad song choice for Paul to have made. I don't believe in any way however, that this is going to ruin Paul's career. Paul is too much of a fighter and worker in his craft. He will forge ahead and continue to write new songs. My hope is that he stays off the road and spend more time in the studio for the rest of 2015. I know he has the make up shows in Japan and South Korea but I hope it is a very abbreviated tour. For the people of Australia, I certainly could see him playing a couple of dates (if he is up to it) but on the whole I hope he spends much more musical time in the studio. Hopefully we will get a new album and the next Remasters (Tug of War and Pipes of Peace) over the next year or two. By that time, people (hard core and casual fans) will long forget his SNL debacle. __________________________________________________________
Excellent post and I agree. Mr. McCartney may not have a manager he trusts but I would hope maybe he would listen to his wife and children who obviously can tell that he did not perform that song well and maybe it is time to remove it. Maybe some "tough" love would be good for him and he would accept it from his loved ones. IMO - Mr. McCartney is one of the greatest live acts ever, very few even close to him. He has nothing to prove and I understand he still enjoys it but I don't want him ending up a laughing stock in his later years. I am like you, hope he forges ahead in the studio and makes new music.
My concern is that there are far too many people in his camp getting rich milking the Beatle-angle. As long as Macca keeps putting asses in the seats, they're gonna stay-the-course, I'm afraid.

He's not gonna go out like Elvis, he's gonna go on like Chuck Berry. And that thought sickens me.

____________________________________________________________ After writing the previous post, I decided to see the videos from the concert the previous night. I was particularly interested in his vocals. As others have said, his vocals were on the whole quite good compared to the last 2 years of touring. A couple of tracks really stood out to me and obviously would have been much better than MIA. To my surprise, I thought "Save Us" was one of the best performances of the night. Ever since V&M / Speed of Sound came out, I've put NEW (the album) on the shelf. In fact, the new Remasters motivated me to be playing the older Remasters. Anyway, "Save Us" sounded great to me after not hearing it in quite a while. More importantly, his vocals were terrific and the band seemed really charged up playing it. The harmonies with Paul were also spot on. The crowd also seemed to really into it. I'm not a singer, but the key in "Save Us" really seems to be in Macca's wheel house. A much, much easier song for Paul to sing the following night. The other song I really liked was "One After 909". Again an easier song for Macca to sing with strong harmonies from the Band. Thought that would have gone down well the next night and it has the "history" thing going (one of the first Paul and John collaborations). I still think back at Paul's comments about his Setlist when he basically says he tries to play what he thinks the audience wants to hear (i.e. the big hits). Yes I understand he has to do the 12 or so signature songs. The only exception to this is when he no longer can sing them well and MIA is certainly hit that point. And then to do it in the national TV spotlight! This is where he needs the "tough love" as Yankeefan points out. As far as the U-tube video referred to above, it is not the 20,000 hits that is the point here. Obviously that is a relatively low number on Tube. But the SNL viewership was huge (18 million I believe). Just think about the huge number of casual Beatle/Paul fans who saw it. The overwhelming opinion on this performance would be something like this....too bad, the man just can't sing anymore. The fact of the matter is that Paul can still sing most of his songs pretty well especially for his age. If he sang a different, easier song, the results would have been far different. Most people would say... For his age, he can still sing pretty well. That's a big difference. That is why he needs his family to really tell him the truth.
-
Why the Chuck Berry dissing? ("That would sicken me" for Paul to "go on" like Chuck Berry.") Chuck Berry's faring well for his age (88 !)--I'd love for Paul to "go on" and on and on, like Berry, still digging his music, into his music
-
Leonard Cohen is 80. Tony Bennett is 88. They sound just fine and still loves to perform. McCartney's voice is perhaps a bit more ravaged by years of rockshows but "come as you are" Nirvana sings, it's only rock 'n' roll (but I like it).

He could try it in a lower key, as Billy Joel does with a lot of his songs live, or perhaps he just wasn't warmed up properly for SNL. I suppose we'll see what happens in Japan and South Korea, if he even performs it there.

Being a McCartney fan for nearly 45 years has been amazing. One great journey. I have played his music from South Korea (teaching English to Korean soldiers) to Maine. My daughter still remembers me singing "She's My Baby" to her when she was my baby. Last month, during my retirement speech, I read lyrics from "Maybe I'm Amazed" to my wife, thanking her for, well, everything. Last week I spoke to over 150 teens and asked them if they knew the old guy singing with Rhianna and Kanye. Surprisingly they DID!!! So yes, everyone needs to take a breath.

Last week I spoke to over 150 teens and asked them if they knew the old guy singing with Rhianna and Kanye. Surprisingly they DID!!! So yes, everyone needs to take a breath.
____________________________________________________________ Congratulations on your retirement. I retired 2 years ago (at 64) and I know how emotional that can be. I had a stressful career in Sales (the last company was 27 years alone) so I was ready. It's been a little over 2 years now and I must say that I don't miss work at all. I miss the good people but not work. Hope you enjoy your retirement. I know some of us regulars may come on as too critical of our guy, but I think as a whole it is really our deep love for the man. We want to see him do well and represent his entire career. For example, it is comforting for me to see so many of my fellow fans love Paul's Solo Catalog so much. We believe he is one of the greatest composer's, musician's and singers of all time not just for his Beatle days but for his entire career. I think most of us are just saying he needs someone of high influence to be honest with him. MIA was just a poor choice given the conditions. The outcome was, in my opinion, very predictable. At the same time, I pointed out that the MIA debacle will hardly ruin his career. One thing we know about Paul is that he will keep charging ahead.

Being a McCartney fan for nearly 45 years has been amazing. One great journey. I have played his music from South Korea (teaching English to Korean soldiers) to Maine. Why the Chuck Berry dissing? ("That would sicken me" for Paul to "go on" like Chuck Berry.") Chuck Berry's faring well for his age (88 !)--I'd love for Paul to "go on" and on and on, like Berry, still digging his music, into his music
Chuck Berry still being on stage and embarrassing himself is TRAGIC. Add to that the fact he and/or his manager and promoters are RIPPING PEOPLE OFF is CRIMINAL. Put simply, he cannot perform, sing or play anymore. At times on stage he is plainly incoherent.

I find it kind of amazing that anyone would pay to see him.

edit to add this from quite awhile agoBut of course Paul gave us a clue in "One Hand Clapping" in the '70s, after dismissing quitting at 25, 35, or 45, saying, "There's no reason why I couldn't go on till I drop!"
