New in the Charts Thread

Joao Carlos:
...but in UK he´s not doing well in many many years. And I don´t know why. He´s hated there? bulls**t!
What with his obsession to kid the world that's he's still a teenager, marrying women young enough to be his daughter, his inabily to utter two sentances without mentioning 'Beatles' or 'John and I' and basically thinking that the general public would ever fall for his sham 'public image' (Paul is the total opposite of how he appears), is it any wonder that he lacks any kind of integrity as far as the general public is concerned? But he's not hated, its just that to many people Paul's just not worth taking seriously. And that's a great shame because Paul is still producing really good enjoyable albums. But for many many album buyers, they wouldn't consider buying a Paul McCartney album no more than I would consider buying a Cliff Richard album.

New is still on amazon and global charts, japan, norway, brazil etc etc Linkin Park sold 39.000 on his second week. Paul on his second sold 70.000. And Linkin Park is for youngers. New is doing great because is not being promoted like it should and stills lives, with no tv shows, no radio airplay, no shows (jus on japan and there he´s doing great), no interviews, nothing to promote. Just mouth to mouth. Waiting for a new top 1 world tour and New will gain sales again. Just wait and see that selling cds is not that important anymore. People just don´t care, because is free and easier to download. But when it comes to concert, to see a guy play live, McCartney beats them all, even Gaga, Perry, Bieber...

Kestrel wrote who outside of Paul fans would want to hear "On My Way to Work"--true music lovers, not just Paul fans...if they heard this excellent folksy song many would love and appreciate it...and his fellow musicians, the ones who are really talented and with great ears for music. You can imagine "Mumford and Sons" and their ilk, for example, virtually drooling over it. Swooning. Paul is the complete opposite of his public image? (Kestrel wrote.) So in private, he's not friendly, caring, and outgoing at all? Is that what you're insinuating? A shame so many Brits hold this sour ungracious view of the legendary music icon. Their own countryman. Yes he'll be "on" in that showy jovial show biz way when he's on t.v. and such, but that doesn't mean he's a complete phony !

The success of NEW in Japan might have a lot to do with the CD being released, then just a few weeks later Paul touring Japan. There is a lesson there: If Paul wants hotter sales of NEW, he needs to tour behind it. Curious no more concert dates have been announced, a month after NEW's release.
-
Maybe he´s not worried about the sales. We are, but not him because he knows hou important he was and still is in music. I saw the guy playin live. People go crazy. Cd sales is not that big deal. People buy lots of money on his shows but not on his cds. Touring he can get a porcentage of people who can listen to the new music on the shows and buy the record. He has to be touring, because his tours are always a big hit.

Macca should have streamed the album free for 2 to 3 weeks prior to its release (on Amazon or Rolling Stone). That would have generated at least some interest among the non hardcore Paul fans, that eventually would have turned into sales. Bowie did this & it worked for him. Lets face it. The whole release - from its poor timing, to no touring, to lack of mass reach through TV & other media - has been a disaster. I hope Paul is not paying much to his "marketing" guys, as he should get his $$ back.

Not sure how charting #3 for NEW is a disaster. It shows how strong a fan base he has. He's never going to appeal to the younger record buyer. If it happens it?s because a parent or grandparent has played his music to him/her. If it had come in at #96 then I could understand, but not #3. If I remember correctly Paul's manager anticipated releasing the CD in the first quarter of 2013. Hence the tour name Out There. Then we heard rumors that Paul wasn't happy with the vocals and that delayed the release of New. Glad he chose to fix whatever was wrong. It's a fantastic record. As for promotions: He played: iHeartRadio Festival Live Twitter Q&A Jimmel Kimmel Free gig in Times Square & Covent Garden & Jimmy Kimmel London CD signing event BBC Maida Vale and he is on the cover of Rolling Stone It seems he covered all the bases. If it had been released in March or even April as originally planned it would have perfect timing for the South American and US/Canadian dates in the summer. Will the Japanese concerts translate into sales for NEW in Japan? It will be interesting to see if it bumps up in December for the Christmas sales. Just enjoy NEW

Paul Down to 96 in its 5th week in the UK....someone from Britain please explain ?
Well, non-Paul McCartney fans are not showing any interest in it basically. And its got nothing to do with radio plays, marketing or the time of year the album has been released. Paul's popularity as a recording artist has been dwindling away for the last thirty odd years although he does remain very popular as a performing artist. Naturally there will always be people who want to go and gawp at an 'ex-Beatle' whilst the opportunity is still there.....and to revisit the soundtrack of their youth by the 'original artist'. In all honesty, who would want to listen to (for example) 'On My Way To Work' other than a paul McCartney fan?
Harrison , my 9 year old son says its his favourite song on the album ....

I wouldn't call it a disaster either. When there were only three major TV networks and music on cable TV was pretty much just MTV and everyone read the newspaper in their town, you could have a marketing campaign that would target a much larger percentage of music fans. Now there are so many channels, plus YouTube, plus music blogs and on and on (and illegal downloading), and there just isn't an easy answer to getting that kind of coverage anymore, unless you do something outrageous and potentially embarrassing. There are way too many distractions. Plus, it should be said that even the Paul fans can't agree which songs are the best for singles, because his music is so diverse and can't be categorized. Some fans think "Appreciate" is an abomination, some think "New" is too old-fashioned, etc. I think his diversity is great, and I like the vast majority of it, but it is kind of a nightmare to sell to a public that seems to want an album to be more or less one "flavor" of music. Your recap of how the album release and tour ended up the way they did is right on target, I think.

Regarding singles, I don't think either Paul or his label has the faintest idea how to get past radio programmers' resistance to Paul as a current artist and get more than niche-level airplay. "New" did about as well on U.S. radio as any McCartney single in the last dozen years or so -- i.e. not too well, but meaningful play in a couple formats for a couple months Even if I liked "Looking at Her," I can't picture it fitting into any current radio format terribly well. If I had to guess a tune that might, it would be either "Everybody Out There" (which I like) or "Appreciate" (which doesn't do that much for me). Without radio support, the only way to keep sales going is to tour or keep showing up on TV. Without either, it's going to keep slipping down the charts.

"Queenie Eye" is still getting a couple of plays a day at my Triple A, WXPN. I also heard it in a restaurant up in Vermont a few days ago! It wasn't a conventional radio station, but something without commercials or announcers, possibly a Muzak-type service? Anyway, it sounded great! And according to HitsDailyDouble, the album "New" will be about #50, which isn't a bad drop-off from #40, so maybe it will level out a little into the holiday season. And it could help sales a bit if critics mention it in their year-end best lists.

i was born in Portugal but live with my parents 14 years in Venezuela, my dad work there for the period 1975 -1989 in 1990 we came back to our homeland Portugal and i can see how Paul is loved in Latin America and hated in Portugal (country that follow english tastes!) for example "We all stand together" didn´t came in America but was a number 2 hit in Portugal! (the best that the song did , in England was number 3) for people in Portugal Paul is the frog chorus man because is the biggest hit there, in Latin America he is a rocker genius! you see i heard a radio program in the net from Argentina is exclusive about Paul , an hour long Calico Skies is the name and in Argentina even Pipes of Peace is a great great record! The truth yes, the truth is that Paul was hated until his bones in England and if the Argentina people see Paul as a Rocker genius why England not!!!!!????they see what he talk and is not only Beatles and John and I i have hundred interviews with Paul in my home in magazynes, from tv and only that british people see that!!!!! they don´t know nothing only about his Cliiffy Richards his Rod Steward, His Queenie if they don´t know about Paul why hated him???? i can´t understand!!!???

Mull of Kintyre is the best selling UK single of all time. Band on the run sold more than 1.5 million UK alone (the charts are out to date but it was noticed on journal), he is in top 10 single sellers of all time there and people of britain voted Paul McCartney the millenium composer. His glastonbury was voted the best glastonbury concert ever etc etc Hated? Don´t know about that. These days his solo records don´t sell too much there, but there´s something about bad promotion. MAF sold more than 100k and the starbucks selling didn´t count. After brit awards later that year his sales (maf sales) raised 600%. Just wait to see his tour to help.

Still have friends who were more than willing to shell out 250 or more for multiple concerts that haven't bought the New cd yet. Some are hoping to get it as a holiday gift, but the majority just don't buy cd's anymore. They can hear it online if they want to, or at least enough of it, and that's where the interest ends. I also know people who are younger and do the same with their favorite artists. Cd buying and albums in general just don't generate the interest they once did. It seems that the only people who still buy them in bulk are very young kids and that's probably because they can't access the computer as readily as those older can.

I just don't have the time or desire anymore to listen to a whole album or CD or whatever they are called anymore. I will listen to the best two or three songs. And as already pointed out above, it is just easier to find it on youtube and listen than go into the living room and put in a CD and listen.

Did I tell you...I bought my versions at FYE in New Mexico! I was traveling through & found Albuquerque had a FYE.

I meant to say this on this thread, and placed it on the wrong one: in reply to R Martinez, I can and will listen to an entire CD, especially "New," I might skip a couple songs like "On My Way To Work" sometimes and "Scared" sometimes, on "New." It's strange-- you can listen through headphones, fall asleep a little while, awaken and be on another song realizing you missed a few and didn't hear them at all, even though they were playing in your head and through the headphones while you dozed off. I like to listen to "New" late at night in bed. Macca music makes a zippy tantalizing end to the evening

As of Tues., Queenie Eye is #31 on the Triple A chart and slowly picking up spins: http://www.fmqb.com/Article.asp?id=255603 But so far, just a handful of stations seem to be playing it with any frequency. It's better than nothing, but not enough to sustain an album's sales.

Where is the album itself right now on the charts in the U.S.?
