I hope Linda McCartney wasn't reading this. 9. He compares collaborating with Paul McCartney to a certain angsty musician "I might be a little bit more angst than Paul. And remember the last time when Paul had somebody really angst working with them, the type of music they made? Hey everyone, America, I'm not comparing myself to John Lennon, I'm just saying I'm angst a bit like John Lennon. And the tension creates a new magic. The pressure creates the diamond from the coal. And he came in with the best vibes ever, and I said, 'Four, five, seconds from wildin',' and he said, 'It's great everyone,' and we just had that. The only way this is in any way meaningful is by all of us falling for it. Many are overreacting to it, and the collaboration in general. To paraphrase Lennon: he "just said what he said, and it was wrong, or it was taken wrong...and now it's all this!" People are taking this far too seriously, even Kayne himself. Doesn't anybody get the irony? Even the hating on him and Kim. It's just like John and Yoko. Yeezus!

I think these comments by Julia Baird in Billboard yesterday do an excellent job of espousing why Paul is still active and why he continues to work with a wide range of artists across many disciplines of music. What do you think of Paul McCartney venturing out of rock and roll and taking more musical risks. He just did a single with Kanye West, for instance. And Rihanna! Could you have seen John ever branching out like that and doing something with Kanye West? I really don't know. Paul is the number one superstar on the planet. There is just no disputing it. He could sit in a chair and read a book or walk his dogs or play with grand children for the rest of his life. He doesn't have to do anything. He's a natural star performer. He'll always be on stage. And why not do everything he wants to do? He'll have great fun won't he? I think Paul is just having a lot of fun right now.
-
^^ Hopefully some of Paul's happy nature can rub off on Kanye. I have made an ass out of myself too many times. So I have no place to judge anyone. And yes. I can see John Lennon having branched out and collaborated with different genres. He loved reggae, the B-52's, etc... We will never know what John could have accomplished since he has been gone for 34 years. Love John Forever.

Both Paul and John were the ultimate music experimenters. No two Beatles songs could song alike - was their rule! John broke up The Beatles because he was bored with the gig. Paul broke up Wings because he got bored with the formula. Paul has tried different genres & partners since 1980. I'm not sure why all the fuss with collaborating with Kanye. Paul has been pushing boundaries his whole career!!

To be clear, Kanye said, "Hey, everyone, America, I'm not comparing myself to John Lennon." Someone else in the room suggested that Lennon was a comparison point, and Kanye only took it as far as saying that Paul tends toward the sweet and Kanye tends toward the bitter. You can't deny that this song does combine those elements, and it's because of their personalities. Of course, I wouldn't call it as good as Lennon-McCartney, or McCartney-Costello, but the result of the mixture of Paul and Kanye's sensibilities does make for a potent mix. And Kanye has apologized to Beck.
Well said. It sure seems like some folks on here are in a big hurry to jump to the worst possible interpretation of everything Kanye says or does. Yeah, he's a jerk sometimes (as are most of us), but try to have an open mind, people.
Really, how many of us have been at awards ceremony and went up on stage and disrupted the person winning the award and then dissed their accomplishment. Try that at a company award function at place you work and see if you still have a job the next day - lol.
-
While he's sometimes a jerk, those comments about John were not offensive. He just said that he has angst like John did. We know that Paul is known for his optimism. It is good to have a counter when creating.
-
Although I enjoy many of Paul's collaborations, Elvis Costello is probably the closest to John in lyrics and songwriting approach.

A group called Gentleman's Rule has already done a cover of the song.
I've seen these guys in concert, when they were opening for somebody else last year. Very talented! -

I appreciate your point. The difference being John never "orchestrated" it. And it was never anything he said to sell more records. They were beyond that. He was just making a point. He was being flippant, without a self-serving purpose.... all those beautiful years ago... and it didn't help their brand, if anything at the time it hurt it.... big time.... this wasn't reality TV days... but, geez, they sure found a way to rise above it and keep the beauty of their music and their imminent legacy on course.... And unlike others, he never called himself anything resembling a messiah. He was referring to the mayhem about it all, not himself or the other Beatles as individuals.... Mr. K.... who I struggle to give the benefit.... has been quite happy to draw more succinct parallels to the Divine and himself. Even now he is talking about the "voices in his head", which in some ways are symptomatic of the difficulties of being so-proclaimed as something "Godly" and "prophetic". ps. there will come a time I need to shut up and move on!

Yup, I reckon most workers would be called into the Human Resources office after that! Or as Dirty Harry might allude, straight into "Personnel... for A-holes." Not a good look for any normal worker.

Beatles were 5th on that list at 19yrs, 4th, 3 weeks (between Got To Get You Into My Life in 1976 and Free As A Bird 1996)
Why was Got to Get You Into My Life a hit in 1976?

That wasn't the bold font headline, so a lot of people will never see it.

Capitol released a double album in the U.S. called The Beatles Rock and Roll Music in '76. One of the singles taken from it was Got To Get You Into My Life. It became a sizeable hit.

John Lennon under the influence of anything still beats Kanye. In the days we live in where people are famous for Muzak and amateur porn movies, John was a real musician. John accomplished more by the time he was 24 years old than Kanye will ever accomplish. "I'm not comparing myself to John Lennon but..." KW

So Paul had hits with Wings and The Beatles at the same time? That's pretty cool.

Yeah, you're right, He wasn't comparing himself to John. Kanye is a real musician. He's a talented musician. He's also been a gamechanger not only to hip hop but pop music in general. You only need to do a little reading a Wikipedia to know this. He's a douche, but that's not the same as being talentless. John had his douchey moments too, but you don't write him off as talentless for it. Honestly, this tendency to write Kanye off without knowing anything about his actual musical career is extremely disturbing. I think Bruce M was right when he noted that people react with more venom when Paul works with Black artists. Which is ironic since the Beatles were open and enthusiastic about the influence Black musicians had on their music. And you can see a throughline through music like Kanye's and song like "Appreciate" on Paul's NEW. And I know people will freak out at the thought that race might be affecting their perceptions, but after 44 pages of this, this thread is enough to make someone lose faith in humanity. parlance
