FourFiveSeconds- new collab. with Rihanna, Kanye and Paul
-
How many times have people jumped all over me for noting the song's chart performance? This thread is about the song, and the song is officially credited to Paul McCartney, as well as the others. If he hadn't picked up a guitar and started strumming those chords, the song never would have existed. Paul promotes it as his song, Billboard lists it as his song, so it's his song. So yes, let's please talk about the song.

What is the topic again? I thought it was, "Let's all call Kanye a talentless douche," because that's what 75% of people's posts have been so far, not about the song. I think it's undeniable there's a racist element out there. That photo that probably everyone has seen, that shows a mug-shot-like picture of Kanye, calling him Kim Kardashian's ass? It looks designed to make him look like a scary black man, a criminal, and people act like he threatened physical harm to Taylor Swift and Beck. He's just a blowhard, and they're over it. Paul has not said a single negative word about him or expressed even a note of unease about being seen with him. He's dealt with difficult people throughout his career. This is nothing.
West portrays himself that way. That is the brand he is selling. Don't make it sound like he puts forth a positive image and every racist out there is making him out to look like a criminal. HE does that. On purpose.
He doesn't portray himself as a criminal, he portrays himself as some kind of master of the universe. There's a difference.
True. I'll give you that.

Lordy. Was "Bruce M." the ONLY person who concurred my assessment that nearly every douchey thing that Kanye West does is pu-bli-ci-ty??? Kanye West is not a douche; he ACTS like a douche -- because newspapers cover it, and the masses talk about it at the water-coolers.

Acting like a douche equals being a douche I'd say^^

The actual topic keeps getting dismissed because people need to reply to your comments. I have NEVER said he was talentlees ...just an idiot. I said way in the beginning he did things for publicity. Like that asking Paul about 60s sex. : I for one have never seem the pic you are talking about. I don't do Facebook. It has not been pictured here has it? He was just an ass to Taylor & Beck. They are gracious enough to BE over it in public...but don't tell me that it is not bothersome.

It would be more concerning if people wouldn't react to what West did in that way because it is wrong what he did (acting or not). Imagine everyone would behave like him.

I think the point that parlance is trying to make about Lady Gaga is that no one is worrying about a Paul collaboration with her. Notice that many folks immediately expressed their displeasure about Paul collaborating with Kanye because he's a rap/hip-hop artist. There hasn't been any displeasure expressed about a potential Lady Gaga collaboration.
Oh, don't worry, there are a lot of people worrying about that collaboration as well. (me included ) The thing is, I don't usually like "popular music". When it comes to popular music, I believe the "music" is often forgotten because of artists behaving like Kanye, for instance (as we can see in this thread). It's all about being popular (putting on some great circus show) which is quiet exhausting. For years I've been to small clubs/pubs listening to musicians who are relatively unknown and the focus on MUSIC when you go there is wonderful. It's like I'm experiencing some kind of culture shock here. Maybe I should go back to my unpopular musicians until Paul decides to make some music on his own again, so we can all focus a bit more on music.

Excellent points. Putting aside whether one supports or does not like these collaborations, the fact is West's antics with Beck overshadowed his collaborating with Paul at the Grammy's. West should have respected that. Instead, he made a call, maybe for him it was the right one, to upstage Beck to get publicity for himself, instead of pushing the new musical relationship he seems to have with McCartney.

Of course I concur. I've said it many times.

I actually totally get what Kanye is saying, and who cares if he is comparing his effect with Paul to the one he observed with Lennon. He's not saying he's better, only that he could envision the same effect, of angst + Paul. Makes sense and worked on FourFiveSeconds, I love that tune.

No Audi. Not just you or Bruce m that sees it. The actions of Kanye are comparable to John Lyndon aka Johnny rotten, meant to stir publicity. Especially the Johnny rotten of say 1977 to 1987 with the pistols and PIL. Now back on topic. Enjoyable song.

Oops! I meant you, as well, old friend.

So if you want publicity you act like a jerk and ruin other peoples moment of glory. Let's see his reaction if somebody did the same thing if Beyonce won award. What the heck, it is OK because they are seeking publicity. IMO - there are other ways to get publicity besides ruining other peoples moment in the sun !!

Actually, he got plenty of publicity that night! He got to sing a solo song written by McCartney, then sing a duet while McCartney backed him up on guitar! How much damn publicity does this guy need???

What I'm suggesting is that they are ALL in on the joke.

Just like Andy Kaufman and Jerry Lawler on Letterman back in the '80s.

Has anyone heard this song on the radio? I have SiriusXM and have yet to hear it. In addition, I have been tuning into my local "Hits" station in OKC, and I have yet to hear it there as well. I don't understand how a song could crack the top 10 on the Billboard chart and not be spun twice an hour like all of the other so-called "hits."
-
I listen to the indie-station in my city mainly, but when I switch to the Top 40 "hits" station, it is next to impossible to avoid the song.

I wouldn't go quite that far. Here's how I see it: Beck wins Album Of The Year, and Kanye is near the stage, so he does that little fake-out like he's going to jump onstage again, but then jumps off smiling, obviously joking. But then backstage, he's bombarded by press saying, "What the hell were you thinking?" So his egotistical instincts kick in, and he feels he has to justify it with his rant, just because it's his persona to be like that. The media amplify the "controversy" out of all proportion, as they always do, and here we are. Could I be wrong? Maybe, but it seems like the simplest explanation to me.

I heard it twice today on my 20 minute ride home. Once on hit station, once on R&B station. Didn't hear it yesterday, but also heard it twice on way home on Wed. Both on hit music stations.
