Only One- new song by Kanye West, featuring Paul
-
After re-entering the Hot 100 chart last week at #68, it slips one position to #69 in the new chart, which reflects activity through Sunday night. So far this week it has been doing pretty well on iTunes, so it's likely that it will gain somewhat on next week's chart. Not sure if it can last much longer than that, though. The other song is grabbing all the attention.

Up to #21 on iTunes tonight, holding its own on Rythmic and Urban radio formats. My guess is it inches up at least a few notches next week.

An okay song, with more autotune in it and less Paul, compared to "FourFiveSeconds", which is more reminiscent of a McCartney style song. Not sure if I would have noticed the song if I didn't know about the collaboration and checked it out because of it. He's done so many guest appearances and collaborations through the years with a varity of artists and genres, I think the song with Rihanna on lead vocals is up there with his best. It's catchy and I've actually become a little hooked on it.
-
It's funny, I liked Only One far more than FourFive Seconds at first. But I haven't really wanted to listen to it since, whereas I look forward to catching the other on the radio. As others have said, I think the autotune turns me off. parlance
-
Both this song and Four Five Seconds sound like something he would do on a Fireman album. I can dig that.
-
Did Paul write the music and Kanye wrote the lyrics? to "Only One"
-
I liked the live Grammy version better, with less autotune and more flesh and blood.
-
Autotune when used as an effect like so many modern tunes may certainly date some songs. Time will tell. Kind of like electronic drums from the mid 80s, you know the ones! Those cheesy tom toms!!
-
Yeah, I've thought the same thing, I think studio production nowadays is somewhat reminiscent of the 80s, it is very synthetic, much SOUND. It's okay for doing something "New" perhaps.
-
I don't mind autotune as a vocal effect, as opposed to using it all the time. I don't like it when it's used to substitute for the real voice. They shouldn't have to do that.
-
Yes I agree, I guess making music is a bit like cooking, if too much salt... it's like too much autotune, it lacks balance or what to say, you listen and weigh the production back and forth instead of enjoying the music.
-
The Grammy performance certainly helped, because it jumps from 69 to 45 on Billboard this week. But he also did part of an even newer song ("Wolves"), though I don't know what the strategy is with that one. I prefer less Autotune if it's a tender subject like this; it's better if it's a high-energy dance track or something like that.
-
I think autotune is OK as an effect, much like reverb or chorus. But if you need it because you can't sing in tune, that is lame.

Great interview with Noel Gallager. But the one part that I can post here... (he swears a lot!) http://www.vulture.com/2015/02/noel-gallagher-on-his-new-album-and-beyonc.html "What do you think about Paul McCartney collaborating with Kanye West? Have you heard ?Only One?? I haven?t heard it. Somebody told me about it, and I asked if [McCartney] was singing, and they said no. I?m not interested if he?s not singing. It could be anyone ? he?s playing the piano, right? If he were singing, I?d have a listen. Do you think McCartney did this because he's worried about the kids who don?t know who he is? I?ve met him loads of times and he?s just a dude that likes to do shit. I think he?s inquisitive enough and brave just to do it. I don?t really think he gives a shit about being relevant. But maybe Kanye asked him. What are you gonna do? Say no? I mean, I would."

Makes sense.

So Noel would say no to McCartney? Or did he mean something else?

Yeah, Noel would say no, but he acknowledges that Paul is more open to this kind of thing. That's how I read it.
