He didn't work hard enough on POP but even so there's some good stuff, I think.
I think so too. The title track, Keep Under Cover, The Other Me, Through Our Love, So Bad..in fact it's quite good. Think I'll go listen now!
Yep, still some fine offerings on that album. And, as I've said before, I still rate the songs with Michael Jackson.... And I know I am in the minority, but I like Tug of Peace. His voice in form. Would've deleted a couple of tracks (Hey, Hey definitely), beefed it up with another four, and it could have been quite a very, very good album. Not as good as its predecessor, but a better follow-up. I love Through our Love and Keep Under Cover.
To me Through Our Love is a classic example of Paul taking a good song and running it off the rails with overproduction. It's a nice little song, but gets so grandiose and overblown after about 1:38 that it almost literally makes me gag. This is one that just screams out for a stripped-down, unpretentious version. The released version is such a stereotypical sticky-sweet Paul love song that it edges into self-parody.
Well, Bruce, I did feel compelled to listen to Through Our Love again and did check out the 1:38 mark... I still like it..... it's a relatively short song, doesn't get too far off stream. Mind you, I am sure that a lot of stripped down versions of songs at that time would be a lot better listening to now, without all the over-production of those times..... but, who in the early 80's was going to strip it down when it was all about layers of production and producers being "clever". .... the one song that, for me, which I feel is a little pretentious is "C'mon People".... I don't mind it, actually at times I like it, but it sits in the "try too hard" category for me. That's my equivalent of your issue with Through Our Love, I guess.
Yeah, both are similar in my book. For some reason, "C'mon People" doesn't bother me as much, I think because the whole song just feels a bit much to me. "Through Our Love" could have been beautiful and -- too me at least -- he killed it with overproduction.
-
I don't understand why people complain about Press to Play's "overproduction" either. It sounds decent to me. I just listened to Footprints about an hour ago. It didn't sound over anything.
-
Some tracks on "Press to Play" sounds pretty basic to me, "Stranglehold", "Good Times Coming/Feel the Sun", "Move Over Busker", "Angry", it's almost a live in the studio rock band vibe to them. There are three songs with characteristic 80s synth and programming; "Talk More talk", "Press", "Pretty Little Head". "Press" is a song I'm very fond of, so... "Footprints" are more less an acoustic number, "Only Love Remains" is a huge orchestrated song, more in the vein of George Martin than the 80s. "However Absurb" is quite psyhcedelic.
-
I'm not the biggest fan in the world of drum machines, but I like Press.
-
Yeah, I think "New" is an album that borders more on overproduction with four producers and fifty engineers or something. It's almost more studio technicians than musicians on it. It still manage to stay within what I find listenable, like most McCartney albums.
-
What bothers me most about New are the liner notes. I don't like that everything's in phone text now.
-
It lacks space when you read. There is no section only rows of text. A bit tiring maybe if you have problems with your eyes.
-
My eyes are great, but I can see where it might bother older people. I just like spaces and paragraphs. They were invented for a reason.
-
I have always been fond of liner notes. Especially with reissues. Historic notes and stuff like that. The early Beatles albums had liner notes. What I liked about "New" was that McCartney had written them.
-
I like liner notes. Those and the cover art are why I don't like to download songs. But I want to be able to read them.
-
Well, I have "Ring of Changes" by Barclay James Harvest on LP and everything on the cover is written in a ring of changes. It's hard to read but artistically it is visually conducted. So I may like it this way.
-
The liner notes inside John Lennon's Imagine were that way..As a kid when the LP came out , I had to turn the sleeve around in a circle to see who played on what song!!
-
Moving the text around in shapes is fine. It's good exercise. Putting everything together in one long block paragraph is bad for those of us born before 2003.
-
Run Devil Run is the only McCartney album I don't like.
-
I still can't think of a worst McCartney album. I have enjoyed them all. Maybe something like... "Give My Regards to Broad Street", if only because it's not much of a studio album, it's just the songs as they appear in a movie. It's still a pretty good soundtrack...

I like 'Give My Regards to Broad Street', 'The Long and Winding Road' with the sax is beautiful!

My daughter is getting married in June and we're dancing to the Broad Street version of The Long and Winding Road.

I quite like that version too. A good choice!

I'm getting to the stage I don't know whether there is a problem with my eyes or general grammar of the mass public. I read the newspaper (on line) and read the "peoples' comments. Am I missing something with my eyesight or the fact that more folks these days don't know how to spell or are too busy abbreviating? Either way, by the end of it I have a headache. I am not so sure it is my eyesight.
