We finally got around to the bonus DVD with the Canadian interview (I hadn't seen it on YouTube). Actually pretty nice, I think. I had been under the impression that it only dealt with the Canadian tour, but there are sections on Brazil (the grasshoppers!) and Verona too, in particular. Nice to see the band's comments as well. I must say, Paul seems quite charmed by the interviewer, and he even lets her play the psychedelic piano!
And...he wanted her sparklley jacket. Reminiscent of his 76 tour jacket.
Haha, yes!

Here are some random NEW thoughts - It is a really, really, good album. - The songs are so consistently strong. - I do not think many people have mentioned how funny "Looking at Her" is. The music is so delicate when describing ?her,? and then becomes loud and dissonant when describing the effect she has on ?him.? Then "she" returns again and again. It is just so funny. - "Appreciate" is the best and most radio-friendly track. - I do not expect hear much of NEW on the radio, though. There simply is no precedent for pop radio to play 71-year-old artists. Plus, NEW does not sound like a ?pop? album to me. It sounds much more like an ?indie? album. And indie station ain?t gonna play Paul. - "Turned Out"should have been a regular album track. - "Road" is a really cool closing track. - The guitar and bass work throughout NEW is just awesome. - I am shocked by Britain?s distain for Paul. Reading him described as ?an uncle that everyone just wished would go away? is pretty ludicrous. He is so appreciated by the rest of the world. - Flaming Pie, Chaos, Electric Arguments, Memory, and NEW are so good. I wish Paul would forbear other endeavors and concentrate on making more rock/pop albums.

I think its credit to NEW that it actually demands relistens. I mean there are several tracks (the psychedelic-flavored Hosana for instance) that I thought "OK" and moved on but spinning the album to/from work...they really grow and organically produced/sequenced well for that album's narrative. "The Road" is a great album closer in the tradition of "1985". I disagree with the local meme that the 1990s flavored "Appreciate" (another that's grown on me) should've been a single. Good song? Yes. But it wouldn't work for radio if you ask me. Of course I would argue instead that "Save Us" and maybe even "I Can Bet" could be singles. (Even if the latter really is a terrific ZZ Top knock-off.) Taking KOTB aside (which was Paul goofing off on a semi-vanity/pet project), NEW continues his artistic winning streak for me since FLAMING PIE. I'm just pleasantly impressed that tackling some of those new sounds Paul isn't doing PRESS TO PLAY in trying to be hip with the kids again, or necessarily just recycling his greatest Beatle-ty/Wings-y beats. He's trying new toys and they pretty much work. Or in short, nice to know that one's faith in him as an artist is redeemed with albums like NEW.

Pretty much agree with all of this. I finally am warming up to "Looking At Her." I think both that song and "On My Way To Work" threw me off at first with their dissonant bursts of energy, but now I see in both cases that they really make sense!

If I was on a desert island and could only have 2 albums of Paul's from his solo works, I would chose New and Flaming Pie!
I'm with you on that one or two

I love Paul and his music as much as anyone but I have to say his new album is rubbish. It has one OK song which is the title track. His singing is atrocious as well. His songwriting has been mostly poor since Tug Of War so I think it's time for Paul to retire disgracefully, I'm sure one and a half billion pounds will last him. Yesterday all his troubles seemed so far away.
Man I respectfully disagree, I think this album is amazing.
Man, what planet are you on? Do you seriously not like this music?

I love this album. I feel like it sort of picks up where "Electronic Arguments" left off, which is cool, because I love that album too. I am glad Paul continues to experiment and be current; it's part of what makes him so incredible. Too many older rock stars are just stuck in the past, like dinosaurs in a tar pit. Not Paul! My favorites on the album are Alligator, Appreciate and Out There but there is not a track I don't like. At first I didn't like Early Days, because Paul sounded so frail and it made me sad. But it is genius, only Paul has a right to sing that song and it feels very personal.
Did you see the video that a fan put together for Early Days? SO COOL!
I agree "Early Days" is brilliant. He mades his point, slightly tongue in cheek, that the four of them are the only ones who know what happened during this time period in their collective lives. Very light hearted rendition of this theme, yet strikes home some very strong points. A lesser man would have had some bitterness leaking through about all the untrue things that have been written and said about them for so many years, but he has none. The older voice in this song is perfect. I love it all the way through. Kudos, well done Sir Paul. Love the fan video, too.

Written about "them" and mainly about him. All I kept thinking of is how people opr magazine reviews always pit the 2 of them against eachother. Oh he was the experimental one, or he was this & he was that. Sir Paul was there & he knows what happened & is too much of a gentleman to say much. He even forgave Yoko. hahahaha...just joking!!!

Nice! lol.....when the title did come out that was the first thing to come in mind was the American album "Something NeW" Finally after two weeks I get to pick up the Japanese deluxe version from my post office; would have had it yesterday but a signature was needed and now I need to pick it up in person.

FAMILIAR PAST IS "NEW" AGAIN So I was watching the making of "Beautiful Night" from the Flaming Pie dvd. I found some familiar instruments and inspirations for the NEW album. Queenie Eye - The Rickenbacker Bass: Beautiful Night - The Rickenbacker Bass: NEW album cover: Last shot in Beautiful Night - Hog Hill Mill Studio Lighting:

I finally got to the Starbucks and Walmart, and they had "New" but not the deluxe version--they might have ordered the pink covers just because they thought it's prettier than the blue cover, not realizing you get extra songs with the blue one. But at least I've got the pink "New." Sort of gorgeous cd cover. Haven't gotten to listen yet, but going over the lyrics I'm struck by some of them not seeming like Paul's writing, they're different. " Road" is imbued with existential angst, almost as if Paul channeled Jean Paul Sartre. The word "Road" seems a metaphor for life. Life's journey. His love songs read more sophisticated and less overtly sentimental on this album, just as " Road" reads more sophisticated. Several lyrics such as "On My Way to Work," "Queenie Eye" (to an extent with Queenie) and "Early Days" read quite strikingly autobiographical. Very nice he included lengthy liner notes, makes it more personal. Makes you realize anew that he could write his autobiography as a book, not only in song lyrics. Pen his memoirs in book form, himself, quite nicely. "Literary Paul." He's always been more literary and cerebral than given credit for being.

You should have ordered the deluxe version from them--I'm sure they would have gotten it for you!

Susy, Glad you were able to pick up "NEW". I think you will love it...the 1st 10 tracks i.m.o. are off the tracks. Even though our Macca is very diverse in music styles, certain tracks on NEW took multiple listens to grow with me because they sounded so different from what you expect from Paul. Those tracks included Appreciate, Hosanna and Road. I now love the 1st 2 and Road is still growing. While it would be nice to have the bonus tracks, I think the version you have is actually the most pure. In my opinion, the Hidden track "Scared" should come after the proper album's closer (Road) like your version. For the CD with the Bonus Tracks, I would have preferred the bonus tracks after the Hidden track. I just don't think the Bonus tracks were originally intended for the album and they just added them to give certain big retailers an exclusive type of thing. Please Let us know how you like "NEW" after a few days. thanks
