LetMeRollIt89:
Sir Paul is going to be speaking live on BBC6 at 9:30 London time this morning, which is in half an hour. (It's the middle of the night here in the states, but I'm staying up!) http://www.bbc.co.uk/6music/on-air

So "NEW", eh ? Reminds me of the "Press to Play" concept, hopefully the album will be better! Can't wait to hear the song now... ...ok, listened to it a couple of times...not really thrilled, from that similar style I preferred "Fine Line", the "horns" are a nice touch though. George and John's "granny" music, eh? The biggest problem of course is his voice, so hoarse, a tad painful to hear...odd they couldn't make it sound better in the studio? Well I guess they didn't cheat at least. PR says 12 new tracks so that means there are 2 bonus tracks in the Deluxe edition : https://itunes.apple.com/br/album/new-deluxe-edition/id695034665 ?

The song is okay but the production is awful (seems to be a drum machine and synth horns and strings). And his voice isn't good either. No doubt I'm in the minority. Does not bode well for the album in my opinion. Hopefully, I'm wrong.

A disappointment for me the song (and when you compare it to say My Valentine it cant hold a candle to it),over produced but undercooked if that makes sense, half a dozen listens in and still feel the same, hope the album is better than this.
-
Yeah, the song is ok and the production decent (not great), so on par with "Young Boy" I guess but not with "My Brave Face" or "Fine Line" for sure or even "Ever Present Past". One of the problems (other than the voice but it is what it is at this point) is the silly/uninspired title, brings back bad memories of "Press to Play"/"Press", you'd think he'd want to stay as far as away as possible from that fiasco (sales, Eric Stewart credits, etc...) !

This is a 'shuffle beat' song. Shuffle Beat songs are instantly catchy regardless of the tune. You could do 'Three Blind Mice' as a shuffle beat and it would be a hit/commercial. So it's kind of cheating in my opinion (an easy hit) - notice how many recent chart hits have been in the shuffle beat rhythm, it's a bit of a trend at the moment - they are usually assured at least airplay hit status if the artist is an established name. Having said all that, I really like 'New', and Macca hasn't done too many shuffle beat tracks over the years. Great composition by Paul and production by Ronson, and Paul nails the vocals. I ALWAYS miss Linda though on BVs, still can't get used to her missing from the mix!

Press to Play has some great tracks. Title track 'Press' is a pop classic He's 71, it's natural for the singing voice to deteriorate with age, his voice has a maturity which I like.

Oh i agree i like the sound of his voice,it is what it is and im sure there's enough electronic trickery going on in the song itself it wouldn't have been to hard to touch up Paul's vocals more than no doubt they have been. As i say even after numerous listens it does nothing for me,i can see why it was released first,it is i suppose catchy but its also shallow i just expected a bit more from the first song i suppose.

Well, after some listens here is what I think about New. The "good news" and the "bad news" Good news: It's pure Paul, he is not trying to be someone else or so, "Pizza and Fairy Tales" again. It is the kind of the song that only Paul can do (or so...). For me the best part is the "Oooohhh", pure genius, you can play it at the piano and think "Why did not anyone write that before?", because it's seems kind of a obvious and simple melody after you hear it. Bad news: I don't like the bridge much, I think I'm hearing some autotune or similar there (only in the bridge thought) and that doesn't help cause I don't like that, and it makes think there could be more in the album... IMO it's better than Fine Line, From A Lover To Friend and maybe than Dance Tonight. Too soon too know, cause now I'm influenced by the excitement that it is a new song. And Paul's voice sound strained in "aaaaalll my life" but for the rest is great. Maybe the strain there is deliberate.... it wouldn't be the first time Paul strains deliberately his voice, you know After all I'm happy cause I expected something worse than this. But I'm almost sure there will be several songs better than this on the album. I'm editing this post again, it seems I can't stop talking bout the song... It's one of those Paul songs that looks as if they were easy to sing but they're not cause of the melody going up and down all the time except for the bridge. As for being a hit, even if Paul had written something like Ode To Joy I wouldn't believe it could be a hit either.

After a few listens the jury's still out but can't see it being a hit. I don't think it is good as Paul's last 2 new songs My Valentine or Only Our Hearts especially the latter which is a favourite of mine. I thought after the KOTB album Paul's next release would be a bit more rockier than this "New"single. Maybe it will grow on me . People say it is Beatleesque well maybe but I doubt The Beatles would of thought it worthy of being a single. I hope the album will be truly great or at least as good as his releases since the new millenium.

Paul was on a British radio show earlier this morning and said that the album is really immensely varied and there's not another song on it that sounds like 'New' apparently. I guess that's why the title might seem to fit with the album. Everything is "new" in a sense. I don't know why but the song reminds me of Red Rose Speedway, in particular 'One More Kiss'. Not exactly sure why but I get that little feeling. Early Paul/Wings stuff. For that matter, I don't know why RRS cops so much flak. I quite like a lot of the songs off of it myself

I don't not like the new song. The few notes at the beginning remind me of the 1960's Beatle Cartoon intro (before the cartoons start). The fade-back-in at the end reminds me of The Frog Song. I saw someone post the lyrics before I heard the song, and though "Oh no, another Paul song that goes nowhere". Yes, the lyrics are pretty weak. Listening to the song, I like the production. Harpsichord sounding synth, handclaps, and even the tone of the song. What it lacks in lyrics, it makes up to me in style! Yup, it is nice! I like it! Podgie (two thumbs up from me!) Monkey

Listening again this morning and singing along; very catchy tune. Love it!

As with every song from Paul, I reject my initial impression and always go for multiple listens before I comment. First of all, it's great to have something new to listen to. We elect presidents more rapidly that we get new Paul music, so this is beyond a treat. Now to the song. I like it! That bouncy piano beat, that Paul is famous for is definitely the star of the show here. The melody also has just enough hook to grab you. Think it's well sung, but have some issues with the production. Love the reprise..... So, the only issue for me is in production. I'm hoping my "sneaky internet version" of this song is the culprit. Yes, I did pre buy on iTunes....Its making Nigel Godrich look ever so more like the polisher of the genius, and I can only wish for another collaboration between them.
-
I'm shocked how many of you hate the song! While I respect your opinions, I couldn't disagree more. I love it...it's catchy as hell and makes me feel happy. Pure Paul, but it is indeed something "new" and doesn't sound like a rewrite of anything from his past. To each their own
-
for me the new song is a slow grower..it reminds me a bit of MAF and the mixing from back then, but I like the song more and more after each listen..can't wait for the album! PS: this song will be a hit!

Wow. This is the Paul McCartney I grew up with in the late '60s. Very Beatlesque and a perfect first single, catchy and instantly memorable.
It's terrific and insanely catchy. Period. Whether it's a "hit" is beside the point. For goodness sake, 71-year-old men don't have hit singles anymore. Can we please just get beyond that? It's about the music, not the singles charts, which are for young artists, not old ones.

It may just be me but it reminds me of something off of Memory Almost Full with Swing; but I only heard it once this morning while getting ready for work. I'll work on listening to it more.
