Those Cringe-Inducing Lyrics
-
Love the song...Feet In the Clouds...but just cringe when I head But I find it very very very very very very hard Yes I find it very very very very very very hard
And then there is Press: Darling, I love you very, very, very, very much, And I really am relying on your touch.

There was a strange epidemic of weird "touch" lyrics that year. Rod Stewart had: Ooh, you're gonna get a, Ooh, you're gonna get a big love touch.

Quite a few of these songs mentioned are among my favorites! lol. Oh well...as a musician, I'm always listening more to the melody...then the words. So even if the lyrics aren't all that...I'm still usually into the music. I love "Press", "Back Seat of My Car", "However Absurd", "Driving Rain", "Biker Like an Icon", "Little Woman Love". I try not to think too much about it, I guess. I really get a kick out of "Soily". I don't cringe, exactly, as I just love hearing Paul vocals on it...even though I'm not paying too much attention to the words with 'the cat in satin trousers who said it's oily'...or the 'liar, cheater, jungle chief, saint, believer on relief, action painter, Hitler's son, and a commie with a tommy gun'.

"However Absurd" makes me think, "Why couldn't John have been around to write the lyrics for this?"

I love However Absurd

Most of these song I love too. But it is just that one line or two ("very, very, very, very" or "dustbin lid") that seems to come up once an album or so that just makes me cringe. Oh yeah, and I just can't take anymore mentions of rainbows.

I would have loved to hear that song get a Lennon/McCartney treatment. I think the lyrics have something to do with Paul taking a jab at critics, or something along those lines and his writing. I don't remember where I read it, but there was something where Paul explains the background of that song. I think with the melody as is, and a Lennon twist to the lyrics, it could've been something awesome, but I still love it...Press to Play is in my Top 5 McCartney albums.

The song is great in many ways. Maybe the vocal should have had more of a psychedelic effect (the Ursa Major effect? the "butter pie / kettle's on the boil" effect?) or been buried a little; then the utter randomness of the lyrics would have seemed cooler and more mysterious. I remember being very excited when Press to Play came out, since it was a return to what I saw as serious music making, after the steady slide from the peak of Tug of War down to "Spies Like Us."

Ebony & Ivory! The lyrics are beyond saccharine & trite, and the use of piano keyboards as a metaphor for racial harmony is absurd.
also.... how is ivory obtained? hmm? seems like a metaphor Paul should have avoided anyway.

Could have been "Black Plastic & White Plastic" and he'd be off the hook!

Years ago I remember Paul saying in an interview that the lyrics for Soily "must have been drug-induced."

I love his non sense lyrics, makes me crazy some times because English is not my language, but I enjoy wondering what means things like C Moon, Monkberry Moon Delight or Mumbo...

Big friendly polar bear? DON'T GO JUMPING WATERFALLS, PLEASE, KEEP TO THE LAKE. PEOPLE WHO JUMP WATERFALLS, SOMETIMES CAN MAKE MISTAKES. AND I NEED LOVE, YEAH, I NEED LOVE, LIKE A SECOND NEEDS AN HOUR, LIKE A RAINDROP NEEDS A SHOWER. YEAH, I NEED LOVE, EV'RY MINUTE OF THE DAY, AND IT WOULDN'T BE THE SAME IF YOU EVER SHOULD DECIDE TO GO AWAY. AND I NEED LOVE, YEAH, I NEED LOVE, LIKE A CASTLE NEEDS A TOWER, LIKE A GARDEN NEEDS A FLOWER. YEAH, I NEED LOVE EV'RY MINUTE OF THE DAY, AND IT WOULDN'T BE THE SAME IF YOU EVER SHOULD DECIDE TO GO AWAY DON'T GO CHASING POLAR BEARS IN THE GREAT UNKNOWN. SOME BIG FRIENDLY POLAR BEAR, MIGHT WANT TO TAKE YOU HOME. AND I NEED LOVE, YEAH, I NEED LOVE, LIKE A SECOND NEEDS AN HOUR, LIKE A RAINDROP NEEDS A SHOWER. YEAH, I NEED LOVE EV'RY MINUTE OF THE DAY, AND IT WOULDN'T BE THE SAME IF YOU EVER SHOULD DECIDE TO GO AWAY. DON'T RUN AFTER MOTOR CARS, PLEASE, STAY ON THE SIDE. SOMEONE'S GLOSSY MOTOR CAR MIGHT TAKE YOU FOR A RIDE. AND I NEED LOVE, YEAH, I NEED LOVE, LIKE A CASTLE NEEDS A TOWER, LIKE A GARDEN NEEDS A FLOWER. YEAH, I NEED LOVE, SAID, I NEED LOVE, LIKE A RAINDROP NEEDS A SHOWER, LIKE A SECOND NEEDS AN HOUR. EV'RY MINUTE OF THE DAY, AND IT WOULDN'T BE THE SAME IF YOU EVER SHOULD DECIDE TO GO AWAY DON'T GO JUMPING WATERFALLS, PLEASE. KEEP TO THE LAKE.

Big friendly polar bear?
It's a bit of irony. Obviously polar bears are not friendly. The whole song is about worrying over the risks that your children are going to take in their lives. The lyrics could have been sharper but I think the exaggerated lyrics are intentional, as parents tend to exaggerate the dangers in trying to keep their kids safe. Gorgeous song.

I have to confess that I don't have the slightest idea what many songs of Paul's are about! I recently read that Paul usually starts writing with the melody first, as opposed to John, who usually started with the words. A lot of the time, I think Paul just plays with words that happen to fit the tune. The songs seem to make sense, because he is such a fantastic melody writer, that it all sounds so right, I don't even wonder whether it really makes any sense. It just sounds so good!

I LOVE Paul, but c'mon now...... If you really love me, baby Better than stayin' in bed If you really love me, baby Nod your head If you really love me, baby "Till you fall down dead", she said If you ever wanna make it Nod your head Nod it up, nod it down Side to side, round and round If you ever wanna prove it Then you hang it on a thread If you ever wanna shake it Nod your head If you think the life you're leading Is better then the life you led If you like the life you're livin' Well, nod your head Well, nod it up, nod it down Side to side, round and round If you really love me, baby Better than stayin' in bed If you really love me, baby Nod your head
