Though I would like Paul to continue if he is able, I tend to view retirement as a positive event. I'd be happ for him if he decided to hang it up now. Nothing left to prove. Good timing IMHO.
I get where you're coming from, I just think Paul would go stir crazy if he truly "retired."

Yeah, he doesn't strike me as much of a "relaxer." Does he even play golf?

Pure McCartney is definitely a better and more complete compilation than Wingspan and Wings Greatest, but it has a big flaw. I think Paul the rocker, the amazing screamer, his aggressive side, is very underrepresented. If this collection is for ?casual fans?, Paul need to shake a bit his image of ?the acoustic balladeer and the light pop hit maker?, we all I know he is much more than. I know the hits are the hits, and you have to include them, and clearly Band on the Run, Jet, Live and Let die, Maybe I?m Amazed, Junior?s Farm, Hi Hi Hi, and many others, all are great material ( at least to these ears, and I?m sure for many fans and critics too). But that does mean, things like Silly Love Songs or Ebony and Evory are going to be included too. And yes, those songs are catchy and have their charms, but they are so undeniably a bit corny and oversweet, and an argument for those who see Paul only as a light pop entertainer. So you need more balance, and put some hard stuff to show his other side. And We All Stand Together, is a great children song, but people usually don?t take it in the right context, and has become something damaging for Paul's legacy, so I think he should have omitted that one in Pure McCartney (Mary had a little lamb was a hit too, a nice children song, but is far from his great material, and Paul wisely hasn?t included in any of his compilations, and I think he should do the same with WAST). In pure McCartney,I will also include some performances of his live albums (solo material, of course), to show McCartney evolution as a live showman, and especially because some live versions are better than studio originals ( We got Married and Let Me Roll It, for example) It?s cool that He wants to conquer his casual fans, but they won?t buy a 4 Cd compilation (Is a good idea for Spotify though, where people can hear it for free). His diehard fans, like me, will buy it, if he add a fifth disc (for the same price) with some unreleased stuff or rare material. I know, supposedly more archive remastered albums are coming, but when? The schedule is going slow. And I?m not entirely sure that Paul will give this treatment to Back to the Egg or Red Rose Speedway, for example. And don?t get me wrong, I love both albums, especially the former. He also could have created more interest to project, if he would have to let the fans choose, at leas,t 5 songs for this collection, using his website, Facebook , Twiitter accounts. He should have included something from Flowers on The Dirt and Driving Rain. And a couple rare b sides and rare good singles like Long Leather Coat and the great hard rocker Whole Life. For The 2 cds version, he should construct a solid testament for his solo legacy, so has to be more well curated and oriented to include his best stuff rather than his greatest hits. The Back seat of my car, for example, is a cooler song than Ebony and Evory. If you wanna to ?sell? McCartney (solo artist) like a complicated, amazing and versatile composer to the new generations, you need more than a cool album cover. I know everybody have different tastes, and their own favorites. Probably some people will hate some of my selections, and Paul and his team made their own. He created the music, so he has the right to choose whatever he wants. But I think few people will defend the inclusion of Bip Bop or Great Day, for example. When Paul dies, Pure McCartney will be the starting point for many future fans, so he needs to show his melodic and sweet side, but also his tougher, experimental and rockier material. This would be my tracklist for Pure McCartney: THE 5CDS VERSION DISC 1: 1. Maybe I'm Amazed 2. Oh Woman Oh Why 3. Jet 4. Beware My Love 5. Listen To What The Man Said 6. Dear Boy 7. Lonely Road 8. Always Be There (Driving Rain's unreleased song, Rusty said that it was his favorite song from the sessions, and it sounded like Beatles circa 1964), 5. Good time coming/ Feel the sun (long version). 17. 1882 (live Wings's version). Paul best unreleased song sounds like Pink Floyd?s Dark Side of the Moon stuff, every diehard fan of Macca should know this track. THE 2CDs Version DISC 1: 1. Maybe I'm Amazed 2. Oh Woman Oh Why 3. Jet 4. Beware my Love 5. New 6. Girl?s School 7. Little Lamb Dragonfly 8. Hope of Deliverance (live Paul is Live) 9. Uncle Albert / Admiral Halsey 10. Rinse the Raindrops (Twin Freaks Remix) 11. Sing The Changes 12. Jenny Wren 13. Save Us (live at Tokyo Dome) 14. Hi Hi Hi 15. Mull of Kintyre 16. Let ?Em In 17. Let Me Roll It (live Back in the Us) 18. Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five 19. The Back seat of my car DISC 2: 1. Band on the Run 2. Getting Closer 3. My Love 4. Live and Let Die 5. Jenny Wren 6. Nothing Too Much Just Out Sight 7. My Brave Face 8. Too Many People 9. The World Tonight 10. Venus and Mars/ Rock Show (complete medley version) 11. Lonely Road 12. Here Today 13. Wanderlust 14. Junior?s Farm 15. Coming Up (live at Glasgow) 16. No More Lonely Nights 17. Only Mama Knows 18. Young Boy 19. 1882 (live) 20. Junk
As comprehensive as this is, I actually think it takes away from the simple goal, which is to bring the general consumer's attention to his official releases. Bonus songs, alternate/extended mixes and live songs should be saved for something like a six- or eight-CD box set.

Well, then, I suppose if it's time for Paul to rest on his laurels, then putting out a compilation such as Pure McCartney is exactly what he should be doing. But no, I don't think he's about to slow down. Even though his voice is increasingly being supported by his band members' backing vocals, he still has tremendous energy and enthusiasm onstage, and he has bottomless curiosity for all things musical. People have been marveling at his ability to keep going at such an "advanced age" since at least 1986. I doubt that anyone then would have foreseen him doing stuff like "Save Us" in his seventies. Barring some sudden medical setback, I don't think he'll be stopping for quite some time. Even if he completely loses his voice, he'll keep making music as long as he's physically able to do it. He's likely to outlive this forum, I'll wager!
"sudden medical setback" These are the words that chill me. He is well and truly in the zone.

Yes, a very nice job, eusse, I think it's actually better than the official one. But it is what it is. Or it is not "What It Is," haha. I still think the official one will sell well, and remember, in these days, sales do not necessarily depend on people buying the CDs, or even the complete downloads. This collection will be prominent on iTunes and Spotify, because it will be the most recent one, and people will download or stream the tracks that interest them, and some people will be adventurous and pick songs that they don't know. But anyway, if a ton of people download or stream, say, "My Love" from this compilation, Billboard will count that as album sales, and it will propel Pure McCartney to a higher chart position. That's just the way they do it now, as strange as it may seem.- And "playlists" on the streaming services are popular, so if this collection is perceived as a playlist, it could get a lot of plays, and some of the songs could win new fans. Just a thought!
_____________________________________________________ Favorite Thing, You make an excellent point here regarding how the sales are tracked and how Pure McCartney will keep many of Paul's songs "out there to today's public". As a hard core fan, is not what I wanted but it can possibly serve a very good purpose. Now Paul can continue with the Archive Collection with albums that aren't represented (or very little) Pure McCartney. Besides the next one (Flowers in the Dirt) I'm thinking of: Back to the Egg London Town Red Rose Speedway Wildlife Off the Ground For anyone suggesting that Pure McCartney will be Paul's last compilation, I couldn't disagree more. 5 or 6 years from now assuming the above albums would get their "Archive Collection" treatment, many non-dupicating tracks are possible with as prolific as Paul has been. Pure McCartney only touches the surface of imaginative compilations that could be conjured up. If you look at Eusse's last list, look at all the tracks that are not duplicated on Pure McCartney. There are so many possible tracks available.

I still think Flaming Pie will be next after Flowers. He's especially proud of that one, I think. Then maybe move on to your first four there, and that is the most I think he'll do in the series.

I heard Paul say so many times in interviews, what's the point in retiring? - He'd still make music, so... It's probably what actually keeps so healthy. My dad worked till he was 75, and my mum is still working at 73. For Paul also, it's so much more than a job...

____________________________________________________ Eusse, As a hard core Macca fan, I have little to no excitement over the actual Pure McCartney after reviewing the 67 song compilation. With an artist as prolific and diverse as Paul is, where is the imagination and diversity to this compilation. For the most part, it is a paint-by-numbers selection process by looking at a Wikipedia Listing of McCartney post beatles Top 40 songs. And, if you have been buying the Archive Collection/Remastering Series (which I have) you already have close to 50% of the songs. As I have said on previous postings, I don't think Pure McCartney is going to do well sales wise. The package is strictly designed for the casual, Baby Boomer Beatles/Macca audience but on the whole, they don't seem to buy CD's anymore. Only a guess on my part but my gut tells me it won't be a successful product relative to sales. Your imagined 5 CD compilation on the other hand is a package I would buy in a "New York minute". It is very creative and imaginative with Lots of tracks I would love to have for my car or home CD player. And agreed, Paul the Rocker is often overlooked. I think Music critics who know Macca's strengths would love your compilation whereas most will unfortunately pan the actual Pure McCartney as being too much of a overdone "hits" package. I also think that a compilation like yours would sell well because it appeals to the "true" McCartney fans who are looking for great rare and overlooked tracks. Off the top of my head, there are a few tracks I would really love to add to your compilation, ...The Mess, On the Wings of a Nightingale, Give Ireland Back to the Irish, About You, and What It is. At the same time I would have dropped some of the hits on your list that are already on other compilations like Let 'Em In, My Love, Ebony and Ivory and Pipes of Peace. Overall Eusse...great job. If only Macca would hire us. I really believe We would do a better job!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yeah, B J Conleee, I'm sure we would do a better job. I think his team are probably good marketing guys, but no necessarily Paul McCartney?s experts. And I think the problem lies there. In Marketing, is very important to know your product (in this case, Paul McCartney?s music) like palm of your hand. I agree with you, it?s better to drop some, not all, of his overexposed soft hits like Pipes of Peace and Let ?em in (but no way masterpieces like Jet, Live and Let Die, Band on the Run?), and include other interesting songs. I originally thought include About You too, but that song is too much about Heather Mills, but let?s pretend Paul would be ok with it . Lonely Road and Rinse the Raindrops are more about Paul facing the death of Linda so I included them. I agree with you about include The Mess, Give Ireland Back to The Irish (one of the few examples of ?Political Paul?), On the Wings of a Nightingale ( for the unreleased disc), and What it Is ( a bit of more Run Devil Run is welcome). B J Conlee, I think we have a very similar taste in Paul?s music. This is my new version, without some of the overexposed soft hits, though I think my original list with all the hits included is very good option too: THE 5CDS VERSION DISC 1: 1. Maybe I'm Amazed 2. Oh Woman Oh Why 3. Jet 4. Beware My Love 5. Keep Under Cover (for some representation from The Pipes Of Peace album, because in this new list I let go the title track and Say Say Say) , replace Listen To What The Man Said 6. Dear Boy 7. Lonely Road 8. My Brave Face 9. Uncle Albert / Admiral Halsey 10. Alligator 11. Long Leather Coat 12. Another Day 13. Young Boy 14. Jenny Wren 15. Too Many People 16. Let Me Roll It (live, from the Back in The US) 17. New DISC 2: 1. Live and Let Die 2. Girl?s School 3. Mull of Kintyre (I keep it the 5 disc version, but not in the 2 disc version) 4. Save Us (live at Tokyo Dome) 5. Promise to your Girl replace My Love 6. Nothing Too Much Just Out Of Sight 7. The Mess replace Let ?Em in 8. Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five 9. Hope of Deliverance (Live from Paul is Live) 10. Hi, Hi, Hi 11. Helen Wheels (Watterfalls was uk hit, but Helen Wheels was worldwide hit and great rocker) 12. Band on the Run 13. Rinse the Raindrops (Twin Freaks Remix) 14. Sing The Changes 15. Getting Closer 16. Every Night 17. Junior?s Farm 18. The Pound is Sinking DISC 3 1. About You replace Say Say Say 2. My Valentine 3. Give Ireland Back to the Irish replace Pipes of Peace 4. The World Tonight 5. Run Devil Run 6. House of Wax 7. Put it There replace Ebony and Evory 8. Fine Line 9. Here Today 10. Stranglehold 11. Don?t Let it Bring You Down 10. The Back Seat Of My Car 11. No More Lonely Nights (I keep it the 5 disc version, but not in the 2 disc version, for representation of GMRTBRST album) 12. What it is replace Goodnight Tonight 13. Venus and Mars / Rock Show (Venus and Mars complete version no the single edit) 14. Temporary Secretary 15. Soily (live Wings Over America) 16. Junk Disc 5 1. ______________________________________________________ Eusse, I look at your latest revised, self constructed 5CD Compilation and I'm blown away. Any fair music critic of Paul McCartney (who actually knows Paul's Post Beatles career pretty well) would just say something to this effect...OMG, didn't know he had so many great songs. I believe that 5-10 years from now he will have some package like this and the reviews will be fantastic. Still, I agree with many here that Pure McCartney does serve an immediate purpose why he continues to put out more Archive Collection Remastered Albums. It does showcase many Solo songs not on previous Compilations and his Top 40 Charted songs (beyond the obvious ones) which there are many. The Pure McCartney Collection won't garner exceptional reviews from critics but that was probably not Paul's purpose. As Favorite Thing says, Pure McCartney will garner thousands of individual song downloads and keep McCartney's prodigious catalog in the limelight. After Paul fully digests his Archive Collection Series (after Flowers in the Dirt, I believe there will be at least 4 or 5 more0 , I am sure we will get some very interesting compilations similar to Eusse's with many rarities, live and unreleased gems. While personally, I'm not too excited about Pure McCartney because I buy all his new releases (including all the Archive Collection) he surely keeps all his fans excited about all the things he does. We never know what's coming next.

I am hopeful that we will hear the result of Paul's collaboration with Elvis Costello, which has apparently been on hold for a long, long time. The work is described in a recent New Yorker as 11 songs, recorded as acoustic masters, and possibly the best work Paul has done since the Beatles....that might be hyperbole, but I would expect nothing but solid material from those two. Paul, do you have plans to come back to this??

I'm not sure if these 3 tunes have already been mentioned but these should be included in any new Paul "rarity" CD: 1). "Goodbye" demo 2). "Wings of a Nightingale" demo 3). "Politics of Love" w/Peter Gabriel All 3 contain beautiful McCartney melodies, but most of the world havent heard them. A travesty!

Would love to hear all three...have heard Wings of a Nightengale and it's really quite lovely!

I was really hoping for one more "Fireman" album/CD especially after EA was so good !!

I'm not aware of Politics of Love ever having been circulated? I can vaguely remember a mention of a live rendition by Peter Gabriel maybe ? Yes that's it : http://maccaboard.paulmccartney.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=87118&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

Wondering what the Politics of Love sounded like. Off the subject, didn't Paul get together with Lady Gaga? Has anything come of that?

Good question. Was that for an animated project?

I don't remember, but thought it would probably be something good!
