Lindiana from Return to Pepperland
-
Like many of you, I have been a massive Macca fan for a long time. I was 15 when I first saw the Fabs on the Ed Sullivan Show. Mainly for the music, I was especially drawn to Paul although I liked them all. The only period I sort of left Macca was during the mid 80's (after Tug of War and Piples of Peace). The main reason I left was more personal (divorce and career change) than lack of interest. I have to admit, I was disappointed after Tug of War (such a great album). Pipes of Peace and Press to Play didn't seem to measure up compared to what I liked so much about Macca albums. Still, it was more the personal things going on that caused me to drift away however. Once I got straightened out and Paul came out with Flowers in the Dirt, I got right back to following our favorite guy. My question is about this so called aborted album called Return to Pepperland from the mid-80's. I have seen a little on the Internet but I know some of you can give me more specific information. What triggered my interest was downloading Macca Solo/wings songs from an "App" available on my Tablet I recently bought (App is MP3 Player Pro). They have a deep collecction of Macca Post Beatles songs. One song I downloaded is "Lindiana" that they say is from Return to Pepperland. My questions deal with this unreleased album...Return to Pepperland. First however, I must say that I love Lindiana. Having Lindiana on my Tablet library, I have been able to now hear it multiple times. While the song has confusing lyrics, the melody is simply gorgeous and contageous. At first I thought is was too long (5 plus minutes) but after several listens I now think it is great. The production seems very good and I love the horns as the song is fading out. It is classic Macca melody. It is just the lyrics that are baffling. Who/what is Lindiana? Did Paul just put it in there because it sounded good. Maybe that is why Paul never released Lindiana. Otherwise, it could be, in my opinion, a lost McCartney classic. Here are some of my questions: *what's the background on Lindiana and why wasn't it never released: *what's the background on the aborted album...Return to Pepperland *what are some of the other tracks that were supposed to be on this mystery album. I did hear the title track on U-tube once but I don't remember if that song had the kind of potential as Lindiana. Anyway, I love to uncover Macca songs I've never heard before. Through Utube I have heard quite a few of them and I just can't believe that they are still unreleased... Yvette is another one I remember that I think is great that he cowrote with Eric Stewart. How couldn't he put Yvette on Press to Play? Please can some of you Macca pundits fill me in. thanks

I think you mean, "Yvonne".

IMO, Return To Pepperland is an album that he made just for fan, not for conviction. The production doesn't give the songs what they need, is just like a good sound but empty. Imagine if RTP became real. That means we lost the Flaming Pie's version of Beautiful Night, totally better than this. About other songs, I think the best after Lindiana is Same Love. Well, I just think it has an amazing beginning and nothing more.

I'm just guessing as I've never heard the song, but does Lindiana have to do with Linda?

Sgt. Pepper, You are absolutely correct...it is Yvonne. It is one of my favorite unreleased Macca songs along with Wings on a Nightengal. Now I am adding Lindiana to that list.

Nancy, That is what I thought too. I think I remember that Paul would sometimes call Linda by Lin, Linny or Lindy. That's probably the origin for calling the song Lindiana. Getting back to the song itself, it is just a daft name for a song title. If he changed it to just Indiana it could work as "their" State Song or the University of Indiana's football fight song. More serious, I think that Paul should consider doing the same thing he did with Beautiful Night. As you might recall, Paul came back to the song, rewrote the lyrics and put it on Flaming Pie (one of my all time favorite Paul Solo songs). Lindiana, I believe, has that same potential. Paul would need to alter the lyrics especially the song title itself. After hearing it a few times, the melody just keeps coming back to me. It is so beautiful. Don't know if you have a tablet (or even on your smart phone) but the app "MP3 Player Pro" does have Lindiana in its Macca Library. I think you will love the song once you hear it.

For those that have not heard it...
I don't know any background about the song or the album. But I too LOVE Yvonne's the one. Yvonne -

I noticed that U-Tube also has "On the Wings of a Nightingale" listed as well. What a fantastic song...another great bird song in Macca's library. He has so many terrific unreleased songs that he should do a new CD based on many of these.

There are many on youtube..unreleased & B sides Bside to seaside
Here's a compilation of Rarities Broomstick -
Just listened to Lindiana. Great song! Maybe he's saying to Linda "don't give up on your photography (your dream)" because "it's important to us (the family)" Who knows?

I love "Lindiana"--sounds so smooth and sweet, not one of his very best compositions but certainly not just a throw away either. Very mellow, pleasing sound.
-
I like Lindiana. But, sad to say, I am actually glad that Return to Pepperland was shelved. The late 80's was a bleak time for music. Return to Pepperland tracks sound, on the whole, relatively cold and lifeless. Having said that, I'd love to see it released now...for fans.

Lindiana sounds a little too much like some of Pipes of Peace for me to really like it, but it's better than most of POP.

Here's an excellent overview (Vigotone linear notes?) about the 84/88 period : http://lifeofthebeatles.blogspot.fr/2009/01/paul-mccartney-pizza-and-fairy-tales.html As for the "lost album", there was definitely something planned in the fall of 1987 as "Beatles Magazine" reported in some detail (I remember scanning that article and can go looking for it if there's any interest) about Paul's "flurry" of activity that included : - New album - Hot Hits Cold Cuts - All The Best, with Waterspout In the end only "All The Best" (minus Waterspout) came out but it's likely the "new album" is somewhere in the MPL archives and at a much more advanced stage than "Return to Pepperland", hopefully we'll hear it someday!
