"Tripping The Live Fantastic" finds the radio!
-
I know it's come up before in the past about how frequently (or quite the opposite) that Wings/solo recordings of Macca come up on commercial radio. I think the 5 post-Beatles Macca songs I hear the most on the radio are "Band On The Run", "Maybe I'm Amazed", "Jet", "Silly Love Songs", and "Live and Let Die". Once in a rare while I hear "With a Little Luck" or "Junior's Farm". The best one was stopping at a gas station in the middle of nowhere farmland earlier this year, at 3 o'clock in the morning, and hearing "1985" blasting through the station speakers. There've been one or two more I've heard on satellite. Anyway, I often listen to classic rock in Chicago (97.1fm). Got the awesome surprise last night when driving home and all of the sudden "Hey Jude" comes on unannounced from Tripping The Live Fantastic. It was awesome! Never heard a cut from that played before on commercial radio (though I'm sure it has been at some point somewhere). Still, it was awesome to hear that band lineup getting some airplay. Was wondering what other songs anybody's encountered out there before. Being a student of radio, I've always been fascinated by these kinds of details.

Heard The Loveliest Thing played on BBC radio one night, many years ago - the DJ, whose name I can't recall, called it a hidden gem which was wasted as an extra track on a Cd single. He was right. I also heard Press played on radio several weeks before release.

Nicky Campbell?

Just heard "Jet" playing the other day on the radio, can't remember where I was, maybe the supermarket. I'm lucky I guess, because I hear Wings, Beatles and even have heard Ringo playing here and there. Not too much of George or John tho.

The only live-album, McCartney track I've heard on the radio (outside of the WOA tracks) is "Kansas City" (Paul Is Live).
-
Hmm...Paul songs on the radio...I've heard a fair share of shockers...and expected ones... Maybe I'm Amazed (Classic Rock Radio really overplays this...) Another Day Too Many People Smile Away (in a restaurant, dropped my fork...) Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey My Love Live and Let Die (They overplay this one too...) Band on The Run (and this one...) Jet Bluebird 1985 Junior's Farm Listen To What The Man Said Silly Love Songs My Brave Face Fine Line I don't think I missed anything...isn't it amazing how our mind can contain memories of exact locations and scenarios in which we've heard a song? I love it!
-
@WixRocks!: What radio-format played "My Brave Face"? When?
-
i heard you want her too on the breeze fm in Wellington new Zealand, but the biggest shock was the fireman fluid in Israeli radio

I think "Smile Away" is by far the most surprising lol. I've heard 11 of those at least once on the radio. Was "Fine Line" when CACITBY came out?

Fine Line is played relatively frequently on the muzak they pipe through at the Jewel Osco on North Clark in Andersonville, Chicago. Come hang out by the orange juice under the speaker with me. It's a blast.

I once heard Listen to What the Man Said playing in Gatwick Airport..that was great..

My Brave Face AND Fine Line were both heard multiple times (but exclusively) in CVS!!! Again, Smile Away was in Bertucci's (italian chain restaurant) and as I said...totally floored!!! I'm sure other Classic Rock stations across the country do this too, but 100.7 The Bay (Baltimore's Classic Rock) did their annual Classic Rock 500 countdown, where listeners vote online for the best classic rock songs...number one is ALWAYS "Stairway To Heaven" but, here's Beatle representation on the list this year... 10. Hey Jude 20. While My Guitar Gently Weeps 23. Imagine- John Lennon 30. Band on The Run- Wings 40. Let it Be 57. Sgt. Pepper?s Reprise/ A Day in the Life 113. Live and Let Die- Wings 185. Back in the USSR 263. Come Together 284. Whatever Gets You Through The Night- John Lennon 323. Maybe I?m Amazed- Paul McCartney 339. Day Tripper 355. Got My Mind Set on You- George Harrison 359. Venus and Mars/ Rock Show- Wings 373. The Long and Winding Road 395. I Feel Fine 397. Jet- Wings 413. I Am The Walrus 465. Something 492. Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-DA

The most far out cut I've hear on the radio is See Your Sunshine! heard it in my car around 10pm I think on WXRT (I believe) in chicago, right around the time MAF came out. It was amazing. See at least one person (the DJ) agrees with me that that song is radio play quality! I've heard a ton of McCartney on the radio. I'vev heard Fine Line a bunch when Chaos came out. Heard Helen Wheels the other day in a McDonalds.

Awesome. XRT plays a lot of great music. They also have the Breakfast with the Beatles through Terri Hemmert, who emcees The Fest for Beatles Fans in Chicago. So I can always count on them for something obscure.

I've been in that Jewel once, I think. haha. I'll make a note of it next time I need a little Chaos and Creation fix.

When I got back to my hotel after the Memphis concert, I was setting the radio to wake me up the next day and ran across a station playing She's a Woman and then Coming Up! (Of course in honor of him appearing there)
-
I never hear any solo George or John. It's like radio has just forgotten them Occasionally, I hear BOTR, Maybe Im Amazed or uh... that's about it. Oh for the days when we used to hear solo Beatles ALL the time. One of them always had an album out and you could count on hearing whichever single in heavy rotation. I can remember hearing "With a Little Luck" and "I've Had Enough" every hour! Radio just sucks now
-
If you include Paul McCartney radio specials, then I've heard many so called 'off the cuff' Paul McCartney songs played on the radio...but as far as just arbitrarily(sp) played out of 'nowhere', I think the most shocking song I heard will probably have my British brethen shaking their collective heads in a 'what's the big deal with that?' manner - Mull Of Kintyre while up in Maine several years ago (we, here in the US, just don't get to hear that song - ever...unless you purchase a CD that has it) I must admit, however, I don't know what station I was listening to and as far as I know, it may have been a Canadian station - who probably would still play that song from time to time
-
I hear "My Sweet Lord" and "What Is Love?" on the oldies and sof-rock stations all the time.
-
I've only heard Jet, Maybe I'm Amazed, My Love (rarely), Band On The Run, With A Little Luck, and Silly Love Songs, on the radio before. I heard My Brave Face in a grocery store which was surprising. I did hear Silly Love Songs playing in a bar right after I saw Rockshow a few weeks back (it was in the same plaza/center), which was also unusual. There weren't many other people at the showing but I wonder if another fan was at said bar and requested the song through one of those electronic jukeboxes. The only John or George songs I ever hear on the radio are Imagine and My Sweet Lord.
-
Here in Detroit, The only song John ever sang was Imagine. George, My Sweet Lord. Ringo,It Don't Come Easy. (rare, now)And Paul...Maybe I'm Amazed...live version only and Band On The Run & once in a while Live & Let Die. SAD
