I've had this on my player for a while now, and it's grown on me a lot. I must admit it would be near the bottom of my list if I had to rank his solo efforts, but I still think it's a strong album. I actually prefer it to Tug of War and Driving Rain, and possibly Chaos and Creation. The weakest tracks are probably those with Michael Jackson, and I know a lot of people don't like Average Person, but I thought it was a good sing-a-long tune (even if the lyrics are a bit sloppy); I like the meh meh meh meh bit. I've done all his solo albums now and 3 by Wings (WL, V&M, BOTR: loved them all), so just 4 to go, Red Rose Speedway being the next if I can get a copy for a reasonable price.

My thoughts are that it contains two of his most beautiful ballads: "So Bad" and "Through Our Love". Aside from those two songs, I never thought all that much about it. For me, it was a come down from "Tug of War". Wouldn't rank it with that one or with "Chaos..." Maybe I need a fresh listen. I did think "RAM" was better than I remembered it once it was remastered and re-released. I sort of loved it. Never imagined that happening.

It's actually gotten better with age. With more & more contemporary artists (including Macca) borrowing synthesizers & other 80s production techniques, its doesnt feel dated as it did in the early 90s for example. Lots of great melodies on the album, although the album still suffers from some poor songwriting. I dont think I'll ever like Average Person or Tug of Peace, regardless of the decade But, Side 1 is pure ear candy in terms of melody.

I have to say it's by far my least favourite of his studio albums although I do like a couple of the songs.

Average Person is one of the stand out tracks for me.

In my opinion, certainly one of the weakest in his catalog. To be mentioned with Tug Of War, Driving Rain, and Chaos, I would rate those as at least 4 star albums, and only give Pipes of Peace 2 stars.

Those are pretty much my thoughts, though I love "Keep Under Cover," silly as it is. "The Man" always makes me think of "Sesame Street" for some reason. But I can listen to the album and enjoy it as just a fun confection.

The title tune is pretty good, a couple other tracks are okay, and about 2/3 of the album is unlistenable dreck. Very possibly the all-time low point of Paul's career, and a complete embarrassment after the brilliant Tug of War. Every 2 or 3 years I pull it out and try very hard to like it and just can't.

Overall I think it's just ok. The Other Me is my favorite song, nearly ruined by the famously cringeworthy "dustbin lid."

Valid points all. I admit that Driving Rain and Chaos and Creation have more depth to them musically, but I really don't mind the silliness on Pipes of Peace. I even think the dustbin lid bit is ok (I read somewhere that it's rhyming slang for 'kid'). Tug of War is a great album too, and for me has a couple of tracks which outshine the Pipes album, but overall I enjoy the Pipes sound better. It's just quibbling really though. All his albums are good!

Personally, "The Other Me" is my least favourite track. I would actually have replaced it on the album with the "Say Say Say" flip-side "Ode To A Koala Bear", relegating "Other Me" to a B-side. My own version of PIPES OF PEACE is as follows: [Side One] 1. Pipes Of Peace 2. Say Say Say 3. Ode To A Koala Bear 4. Sweetest Little Show 5. Average Person [Side Two] 6. The Man 7. Keep Under Cover 8. So Bad 9. Hey Hey 10. Tug Of Peace 11. Through Our Love

I haven't heard Ode to a Koala Bear, I will look it up on youtube. I quite like The Other Me. I find it catchy and tuneful.

I will maintain a soft spot for the album. Good memories. Through Our Love and Keep Under Cover still my favourites. Both great. Also like So Bad. Say Say Say an undeniable hit. I must be one of the few to like The Man. And like Tug of Peace. His voice in great form. Album needed to strike off Hey Hey and add three more bona fide songs and it'd be far more appreciated. As it is, at 11 songs - although really 10 if one excludes Hey Hey - it suffers from lack of content. But I enjoy the trip every time I listen to it.

Love the album cover with the nod to van Gogh... I'm going to go with the remastered album, I like the remasters because of the bonus songs. My favorite song is probably So Bad, it's so very beautiful and a definite nod to Linda. I love the Paul and Linda video for that..

nice to see Ringo in there! As Ringo says, that's magic! Keep Under Cover is also a fav. Say Say Say is very commercial however it brings me good memories. Pipes of Peace is great and really the idea of the album is about Peace isn't it? Sweetest Little Show, well that says it all in a very sweet song, Of the bonus songs... I've always loved We all Stand Together and ties in with the theme of Peace. Wish they played that in schools for children. and I also like Simple as That. Average Person is one of 3 Paul songs I really don't like... Ode to a Koala Bear isn't on mine... All and all it's definitely got some gems in there.

Joy to the World - Peace on Earth - We are all ONE

Ode To A Koala Bear is not on the album. It is the b-side of the 45 "Say Say Say."

A few half-decent songs but its that sterile production owing to typical early 80's technology that makes the album so lame. 'Press To Play' suffered as well from the same problem.

It was always going to be hard to follow the great Tug of War. The original vinyl album can be summed up as Side 1. is the A side with some excellent tracks like So Bad, Say Say Say, Pipes Of Peace & The Other Me and Side 2. is the B- side with one great track Through Our Love and Average Person is pretty good but the rest is not much.

Listen to the song they sing,
                                        Awakening

I mentioned this in another post, but the original cassette version of Press to Play did not suffer from this production problem. I know there is a CD version out there somewhere as I have a ripped copy from many years ago, and its great. Probably my favourite McCartney album. Tug of War has some very strong stracks but I think some of the ballads are quite weak, including Here Today. Nothing bad, just preference for a certain type of song I suppose. I wonder what Paul thinks of Pipes these days?

A cassette version with great production?? I gotta hear that. The advent of the cassette must be up there with Beta.... that being said, Beta was superior to VHS.... but cassettes were a strange introduction to the music scene.... never that good when it came to quality sound.
