Pure McCartney

The "old" me would buy this. For "completion". The "new" me, who tires of "rehash" and "same ol' same ol'" is more reticent. I want a new album. I will shy away from buying a compilation that I could compile myself from every album already in my keep. The only song not in my keep is that Hope for the Future song. Never bothered with that. The old me would've bought it. The new me consigns it the same bin reserved for Mr. K But if the album cover is to be believed, I do love the hirsute version. I've always liked the bold non-safe side.
-
But, that being said, this release is possibly not about me. Or those with every song on the list already in their collection. Gonna have to give me something new and exciting to entice me to buy this.

Pure McCartney is definitely a better and more complete compilation than Wingspan and Wings Greatest, but it has a big flaw. I think Paul the rocker, the amazing screamer, his aggressive side, is very underrepresented. If this collection is for ?casual fans?, Paul need to shake a bit his image of ?the acoustic balladeer and the light pop hit maker?, we all I know he is much more than. I know the hits are the hits, and you have to include them, and clearly Band on the Run, Jet, Live and Let die, Maybe I?m Amazed, Junior?s Farm, Hi Hi Hi, and many others, all are great material ( at least to these ears, and I?m sure for many fans and critics too). But that does mean, things like Silly Love Songs or Ebony and Evory are going to be included too. And yes, those songs are catchy and have their charms, but they are so undeniably a bit corny and oversweet, and an argument for those who see Paul only as a light pop entertainer. So you need more balance, and put some hard stuff to show his other side. And We All Stand Together, is a great children song, but people usually don?t take it in the right context, and has become something damaging for Paul's legacy, so I think he should have omitted that one in Pure McCartney (Mary had a little lamb was a hit too, a nice children song, but is far from his great material, and Paul wisely hasn?t included in any of his compilations, and I think he should do the same with WAST). In pure McCartney,I will also include some performances of his live albums (solo material, of course), to show McCartney evolution as a live showman, and especially because some live versions are better than studio originals ( We got Married and Let Me Roll It, for example) It?s cool that He wants to conquer his casual fans, but they won?t buy a 4 Cd compilation (Is a good idea for Spotify though, where people can hear it for free). His diehard fans, like me, will buy it, if he add a fifth disc (for the same price) with some unreleased stuff or rare material. I know, supposedly more archive remastered albums are coming, but when? The schedule is going slow. And I?m not entirely sure that Paul will give this treatment to Back to the Egg or Red Rose Speedway, for example. And don?t get me wrong, I love both albums, especially the former. He also could have created more interest to project, if he would have to let the fans choose, at leas,t 5 songs for this collection, using his website, Facebook , Twiitter accounts. He should have included something from Flowers on The Dirt and Driving Rain. And a couple rare b sides and rare good singles like Long Leather Coat and the great hard rocker Whole Life. For The 2 cds version, he should construct a solid testament for his solo legacy, so has to be more well curated and oriented to include his best stuff rather than his greatest hits. The Back seat of my car, for example, is a cooler song than Ebony and Evory. If you wanna to ?sell? McCartney (solo artist) like a complicated, amazing and versatile composer to the new generations, you need more than a cool album cover. I know everybody have different tastes, and their own favorites. Probably some people will hate some of my selections, and Paul and his team made their own. He created the music, so he has the right to choose whatever he wants. But I think few people will defend the inclusion of Bip Bop or Great Day, for example. When Paul dies, Pure McCartney will be the starting point for many future fans, so he needs to show his melodic and sweet side, but also his tougher, experimental and rockier material. This would be my tracklist for Pure McCartney: THE 5CDS VERSION DISC 1: 1. Maybe I'm Amazed 2. Oh Woman Oh Why 3. Jet 4. Beware My Love 5. Listen To What The Man Said 6. Dear Boy 7. Lonely Road 8. i don't get the hate for "Great Day" - i've always loved it, i loved that you can hear Linda so well, i love that they sang it for the kids, i plan to sing it to my own child (poor thing with my vocals!!), and i think it's a happy acoustic little song.

First off, this upcoming Pure McCartney compilation is a welcomed addition to the canon. I like the fact there are some b-sides, highlights from random projects, and strong recent material to update the money shot presentation. Basically, an updated Wingspan with more recent solo material to boot. A lot of this material deserves to get some additional spotlights. Great, fine, we'll take it. However, I agree with the post above. I would really like a Cold Cuts project to be served up. (the reported scrapped project of unreleased material) There is certainly enough unreleased quality material, and I would think a market and interest to support it. I get it for now, it's a way for folk to buy the archive releases, a few sprinkled rare and known gems, an additional disc. I like the cohesive time period presentation of these archive releases. Perhaps after another archive release or two, the powers at be can devote some efforts to a rare and unreleased box set? Anything already in the works? Bob Dylan has the Bootleg Series, and hardcore fans have known or traded for decades a lot of outtakes and unreleased , that are some of the true gems from the sessions,. Better -honest production, lyrics, perhaps the same melody was used in favor of another song, or one great song just did not fit the vibe for the package or too long in length. Certainly the Macca vaults have enough for a few strong and stellar servings. I hope the wealth of the best unreleased material will come out,. Waterspout, C.A.G.E., robber's ball, Mama's little girl, live versions, alternative takes, etc Either way, I'm glad to see this release, but for those of us that already have the material, would be nice to have something new from the archive (anticipating) as well.

The Rolling Stones released a similar collection in 2012 ("Grrr!"). Four years later, they are still touring and reportedly recording a new album. Bob Dylan also released a similar collection in 2007 ("Dylan"). Nine years later, he remains on his "Never Ending Tour" and, in the meantime, has recorded five more studio albums. I don't think that we should read anything into this new release other than that MPL thinks that there is money to be made from it...or that it might win Paul some new fans.

I guess it could inadvertently end up being a farewell tour if Paul's circumstances (e.g., health) change significantly within the next 3 years. But if Paul had already decided that this would be his last tour, then surely that wouldn't be kept secret? After all, it would give a huge boost to ticket sales if people knew that this was officially their last chance to see him (especially in countries and regions that Paul has played repeatedly in the past decade or so, where there are probably some people thinking "maybe next time").

I think people not necessarily hate Great Day ( I don't hate Great day or Bip Bop, I think both are OK) , but Paul clearly has a lot better songs than that one, and is really a "filler track" which the great majority won't put in a Paul's? best of? compilation.

Maybe it's all just a giant head fake meant to surprise us with a new album
-
It seems that everyone says every album and tour is his farewell album/tour for forever now!! Hasn't he said he will always make music... Then he comes out with a new musical surprise... Electric Argments...New... I just think to myself... I can't wait for the next album/tour !!! Perhaps these songs are just some of Paul's favorites... Who could begrudge and tear apart someone's favorites then. Or what if this is the new setlist?! Who would complain then? Everyone has been asking for more of Paul's solo stuff... oh why do we all complain so much?! Love Great Day and Bip Bop which makes me think of the video of Linda, Mary and Heather... I would be curious for everyone's 4 disk compilation though. It was interesting to read eusse's list!
-
I don't see this as a farewell album. I will buy for completion (the album cover is cool). The missed opportunities are: *either including unreleased material (like cold cuts but emphasizing that these tracks are not part of the archive series) *putting new material on this collection For example the two cd version could have had 4 new songs of material and the 4 cd /4 lp could have had 8 new songs of material. That would be 2 new songs per disc and they could have been inserted between the other tracks.

Bruce M.:
I dunno... I have no need for a compilation like this so I'm not the intended audience. On the one hand, I see what people are saying about this being a somewhat incoherent collection of tracks. On the other hand, it might introduce some listeners to a number of great songs that the general public doesn't know, so I'm not going to complain. But like others, I'm not sure the point of bringing this out or why it's coming now. It would be great to see a few of the lesser-known tracks here to appear in the new tour's set list, but he hasn't done a lot of that with the album reissues, so I don't dare get my hopes up. As always, Macca's marketing is a bit of a puzzle.
What set the standard for non-chronological best-of compilations were multi-Platinum sellers like Prince's The Hits/The B-sides and Sade's The Best Of Sade. I prefer to listen to collections in an unexpected order. Unfortunately, though -- as for any setlist overhauls, my hopes have been dashed already: The thing doesn't even come out until mid-June, and Paul McCartney's latest leg of touring starts in less than two weeks.

Back in the day, my worst fear was that Flaming Pie would sound like a Wilburys record. To my surprise, it sounded very McCartney. I don't consider FP over-produced at all.
