Pure McCartney

Hey, look, I'm a big booster of Paul, but #43 is just not a good showing on the charts. That's #43 for the deluxe (4-CD) version, #80 for the regular 2-CD version. To put this in perspective: the "Wingspan" collection debuted at #2. And also, this week, while "Pure..." is at #43, the Beatles' "1" collection jumps up from #117 to #41--higher than McCartney's new set. I see what he was trying to do: Let's have a career-spanning collection, but let's mix it up, because if we put it in chronological order, no one will listen to Disc 3 and 4 (sadly). And, since the new mixes of "Flowers In The Dirt" aren't quite ready, maybe no one will notice that we've completely ignored that album, since the tracks are all mixed up, Make no mistake: I think this collection is highly listenable, but the concept was way too vague to appeal to the casual buyer. And the facial hair was a roll of the dice that won't do him any favors over the long haul.

Really pleased and a bit surprised that this made it to #3 in the UK album chart. A follow up would be good - call it Impure McCartney! And if its true that it was an MPL office worker who was the inspiration behind this compilation, perhaps she could put together a setlist too!
While I think that is a totally stupid title, I agree a Vol. II with more b-sides and deep tracks would be welcome. ops:
Just to clarify - I wasn't being serious in suggesting that a follow up be called Impure McCartney; just my attempt at humour.

Next time use a instead of a to indicate you're jk. I just love emojis!

This was bound to be just like his concerts. People on the board are going to complain. Sheesh! This is 4 CD's or LP's of brilliance! Rolling Eyes Smile

Pure McCartney enter US charts at #43. Not too impressive. Too many great songs left off.
Getting very mediocre reviews on U.S. Amazon. Biggest complaints are: 1). Song selection. Any casual Paul fan pointing out nothing on Flowers, hits missing, etc. and yet Bip Bop and other questionable picks are on the 4 CDs. 2). Room for more songs. Paul could have fit a LOT more songs on the CDs. Someone figured out another roughly 60 minutes of music across the 4 CDs could have fit. C'mon Paul, in this case more IS better! 3). Few "rarities" to add value for Paul fans. 4). No structure to the song list. All over the place. Again, just a simple chronological order would have been more attractive.

More IS better!

Me too, and I think he did it so people would hear the newer stuff, and not just stop after "Coming Up."

You'd love my office then - I've got stuff all over the place in there!

In his week's UK album charts Pure McCartney has slipped from 3 to 12.

OK, this is weird: Several days ago, when I looked at Billboard's chart, the above was what I found: the 4-CD version debuting at #43, and the 2-CD version at #80. Now, they've gone back and apparently revised the chart, apparently adding up all sales for the two together, and it shows just one entry of Pure McCartney (still in its first week) debuting at #15! (The Beatles' 1 still shows at #41.) I have never seen this happen before, with a Billboard chart being revised midweek (unlike iTunes or Amazon, which are revised constantly, every day or more). Later this morning, we should be seeing the chart for the new week (Pure's second week). I'm sure it will have dropped, but at least this debut looks better for Paul. I wonder if Paul's team asked for the change? Or maybe Billboard has changed its rules on this type of reissue? I know I've seen multiple listings before when a reissue has different configurations, but maybe that doesn't apply if it's a "new" title, as opposed to an already existing album being re-released? That could be it. Just geeking out, don't mind me. (And by the way, Pure debuts at #9 on the Top Album Sales chart (which doesn't include streaming data, as the Billboard 200 does), and it's #6 on the Top Vinyl Albums chart.)

That is Good News ...I thought those numbers were kind of strange :

Just received the Japanese 4-CD set. Nice package, I like the extra booklet with lyrics to the songs. According to that booklet, all tracks are in stereo, except for Bip Bop. I wonder why it was included in mono on this set?

That is odd. Of course, that mono version has been released on the deluxe Ram set, but kind of surprising to have it here. Very cool about the lyric booklet!

I still need to get my copy but it may have to wait until my birthday. I gotta get all of Paul's CDs back too since I lost them when I moved. I have no problems with the list of songs on Pure McCartney. Whatever Paul comes out with I love it anyway.

But to have the "Band On The Run" (reprise)" tagged onto the end of "Nineteen Hundred Eighty Five" BEFORE the full "Band On The Run" title cut later on the same disc...is just sloppy and idiotic, as is having the first few bars of "Smile Away" tacked onto "Uncle Albert....." They couldn't have used the single version of the song?? Who in the hell put this jumbled mess together with so little common sense? If Paul was in full control, he screwed up in many ways. And that's not counting the songs he left off. "Winedark Open Sea" from "Off The Ground" and not "Hope Of Deliverance"????? And he could have put a few songs from "Flowers In The Dirt" on this RETROSPECTIVE, CAREER SPANNING COLLECTION, even if he plans on that album being his next reissue. (My Brave Face, This One, Put It There) I''ll just have to wait for that album to put together a collection which I believe will be much better than Paul's. : : He's totally the worst judge of his own work.

I find it interesting that all three editions (4 disc CD, 2 disc CD, and 4 LP Box) begin with Maybe I'm Amazed and end with Junk from the first solo album McCartney. That pretty much says it for me. Nothing he does is ever just thrown together. There was a lot of thought put into this album.

A lot of dumb thought, yes. I note the album has already dropped to 27 in the UK, and will be out of the charts altogether in a couple of weeks. So, as predicted, once all the hard-core, must-have collectors snapped it up, there was a collective yawn from the wider public about a baffling, illogical, under-promoted and badly presented collection, and it is already heading for obscurity. A huge missed opportunity to promote Paul's solo catalogue to a new audience. What a pity. Can we have the Flowers in the Dirt remaster now please?

When I saw there was no songs from FITD and he included the awful "Bip Bop" I wondered what the heck they were thinking putting this together. This type of thing should have included B sides, songs never released, maybe a song or two from sound checks and how about a brand new song.
