I dunno... I have no need for a compilation like this so I'm not the intended audience. On the one hand, I see what people are saying about this being a somewhat incoherent collection of tracks. On the other hand, it might introduce some listeners to a number of great songs that the general public doesn't know, so I'm not going to complain. But like others, I'm not sure the point of bringing this out or why it's coming now. It would be great to see a few of the lesser-known tracks here to appear in the new tour's set list, but he hasn't done a lot of that with the album reissues, so I don't dare get my hopes up. As always, Macca's marketing is a bit of a puzzle.
What set the standard for non-chronological best-of compilations were multi-Platinum sellers like Prince's The Hits/The B-sides and Sade's The Best Of Sade. I prefer to listen to collections in an unexpected order. Unfortunately, though -- as for any setlist overhauls, my hopes have been dashed already: The thing doesn't even come out until mid-June, and Paul McCartney's latest leg of touring starts in less than two weeks.
Sadly agreed. If I were paying to see Paul a 3rd time the set would have to have some major changes. Otherwise the DVD is fine for me.

I've seen Paul three time already (and Ringo three times to) and would quite happily pay to see him again despite relatively small set list changes. I was hoping for a DVD release of the Tokyo 2013 show but think the time for that has now well passed.

EDIT It would be concert #6 for me. I'd love to experience a McCartney concert again but not if it means enduring "Let Me Roll It" ... again, "Long & Winding Road" ... again, "Let It Be" ... again, "Magical Mystery Tour" ... again, "All My Loving" ... again, "Back In The USSR" ... again, the same anecdotes ... again, "Blackbird" ... again, "Eleanor Rigby" ... again. Classic songs, indeed. But repeating the same essentials -- and in the same slots -- is what oldies acts do. I commend Macca for "Temporary Secretary." And I understand that "Hey Jude" and "Yesterday" are part of the ritual. But I'm pretty sure that torches and pitchforks won't come out if the other aforementioned songs were replaced.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

I think the cover looks great.

i don't get the hate for "Great Day" - i've always loved it, i loved that you can hear Linda so well, i love that they sang it for the kids, i plan to sing it to my own child (poor thing with my vocals!!), and i think it's a happy acoustic little song.
I think people not necessarily hate Great Day ( I don't hate Great day or Bip Bop, I think both are OK) , but Paul clearly has a lot better songs than that one, and is really a "filler track" which the great majority won't put in a Paul's? best of? compilation.
Great Day stands head and shoulders above most of the over-wrought ELO-style garbage on Flaming Pie.
Back in the day, my worst fear was that Flaming Pie would sound like a Wilburys record. To my surprise, it sounded very McCartney. I don't consider FP over-produced at all.
I happen to like Jeff Lynne's distinct production style. His latest CD is very Beatles-esque

Sounds like an interesting album. The title, "Pure McCartney" sounds like a good name for a Scotch Whisky.

So, no Girls School??? But Bip Bop is on this??? And Paul wonders why he has a hard time being taken seriously sometimes as a real rock n roller.

While we could argue all day of what should or should not been included. Bip Bop is the only track that really had me gobsmacked. If you wanted something from Wild Life surely the brilliant Some People Never Know or Dear Friend or even Tomorrow should of been included instead. This aside anyway I think the package as a whole is pretty good as a wide ranging cross section of Paul''s work.
-
I take it the absence of any flowers in the dirt stuff is due to it being the next reissue? Can't thing of any other reason for such a strong album being overlooked. Makes a " definitive" collection rather undefinitive...

I agree. I don't hate Bip Bop, just like other songs on the LP better.

In terms of quality I would agree with you. But the songs chosen for this compilation were selected because (according to Paul) they are 'fun' to listen to. Does 'Dear Friend' make for a fun listening experience?

I also really hope that FITD will be the next re-issue, as it was the album that really got me into paul's music. as wonderful as "pure mcCartney" is, I simply cannot understand why some of the most relevant songs from the late 80s/early 90s are missing - the time when my generation became aware of paul (I grew up in the 80s and 90s). when I was a teenager, I listened nonstop to "My Brave Face", "This One", "Put It There", "Hope of Deliverance", "C'Mon People", etc. These songs were also actually played on the radio! It would have been marvelous to have these songs on the compilation. it's weird - on the one hand, people are wondering why paul's ticket sales are rather poor in Germany; on the other hand he never promotes songs that were really huge sellers in this territory, such as "Hope of Deliverance". I would also go so far as to bet that this compilation won't sell enormously well in countries like Germany and Austria, because it doesn't contain "Hope of Deliverance" and "This One" (one of paul's biggest hits in Austria). I can also hardly understand the absence of songs from Run Devil Run or Driving Rain - two albums I really like. Songs like "From a Lover to a Friend", "Your Way", "Vanilla Sky", "No Other Baby" and "What It Is" would have been nice additions to "pure mccartney" too. sorry about complaining...but except for these omissions I think that it's nice to have a new compilation by paul.

That's the kind of decision John Lennon would have rightfully vetoed out of the gate. All Together Now may be more "fun" but is nowhere in the universe of being as good a song as Long And Winding Road, which, because it is such a great song, is more "fun" to listen to. Dear Friend is a real song. Bip Bop isn't. It's a McCartney doodle, which he seems to always take a bit of pride in, but critics and others just shake their heads at. And other Beatles too.

Paul's biggest problem is that his catalog is diverse. If he were Don McLean, he could release a compilation with American Pie, Vincent and Crying and everyone would be happy. But with 45 years of material, no matter what he does, large patches of his fans will be outraged. When he put out a Wings compilation, people wanted a solo compilation. When he puts out a solo compilation, people don't want those songs. I'd love to see a CD that everyone loves, but that's never going to happen. It's physically impossible. He could not even choose a dozen songs that his fans would approve. Name any Paul song. A third of his fans think it's the greatest song in the world. Another third think it's an embarrassment that should be set on fire. The other third would rather hear [insert absolutely any song]. When he's gone, most of his songs will suddenly be classics. People won't cringe and be embarrassed so much anymore. But for now, Paul has to accept the fact that his fans are going to be disappointed no matter what he does. In a lot of ways, that's high praise for his career.

_______________________________________________________ Excellent post Hailey. In my opinion, Paul could release another 67 song compilation that would be almost as good.

Paul's biggest problem is he's the worst judge of his own damn music. There are times when it's best to take a back seat and allow for some objectivity. I'd love to know what Mark Lewisohn's song choices would be.

Ausse, I absolutely love your tracklisting, that would definitely be an album that I would buy. Guys no way could McCartney please everyone, he just has too much music. I do agree and scratch my head at some of the choices though. What I really want is for McCartney to get his band in the studio and record a brand new album. To this day he hasn't recorded a full album with just his band? His band rocks and he should unleash them by recording some new music. Make sure he gets a producer that understands real rock and roll, no more touchy feely soft producers. Get someone that knows how to rock!
