Pittsburgh Pirates Rumors Pirates Release Ramon Vazquez By Tim Dierkes [April 8, 2010 at 12:53pm CST] The Pirates unconditionally released infielder Ramon Vazquez, according to a team press release. Vazquez had been designated for assignment four days ago. The Pirates will assume Vazquez's $2MM salary, less the league minimum if another team signs him. MLBTR's Luke Adams looked at Vazquez's situation earlier this week, noting that he should have value to a few clubs at the league minimum salary. The 33-year-old hit .230/.335/.279 last year in 239 plate appearances, playing second base, shortstop, and third base and dealing with a knee injury. GM Neal Huntington's plan when signing Vazquez in December of '08 may have been to find a credible back-up middle infielder in case the team traded Freddy Sanchez and/or Jack Wilson. But you have to question his $4MM commitment to Vazquez, a journeyman platoon player who still didn't hit lefties in his career year '08 season. Veteran in-fielder 67-year-old Paul McCartney will replace Vazquez until next year's draft produces another viable candidate at Shortstop.

I had the oldies radio station (the Pickle) on at work this morning and right after they played a Beatle song they talked about Paul being out on the road and said he just did a few dates in the states for now.. and that after his European dates he's supposed to do more dates.. they said "hmm.. waiting to hear if he's coming around this way!" I really think they were speculating on doing more dates after Europe.. but it still pumped me up!
What is "The Pickle"? I thought 3WS was the oldies station in Pgh?
3WS is the Pittsburgh station.. The Pickle (WPKL) is from outside of Pittsburgh I believe.. but I manage to pick it up on my radio every now and then. I think it comes in around 92.1, depending on how far from the city you are.

Rush announced they are playing the new arena September 16th, I really hope that isn't the big band they have planned. Nothing against Rush or their fans.
I don't think so...this concert is still after the Lady Gaga concert (September 5th)..so obviously Rush isn't the opening act either.
whew, if they wold be the opening act, I'd be ticked! As a matter of fact, if it's anyone but Paul, I'll be ticked!

There's always room for another left-hander in the lineup.

Big news coming Monday afternoon about another Consol Energy Center concert. Could it be? I'll be on pins and needles until then. Source: http://twitter.com/ConsolEnergyCtr

Well, it does not use the word "big" but one would assume it must be to announce that you are going to announce it, and there is nothing bigger than Paul!

Might be Paul, but Roger Waters is announcing his tour on Monday, and he is playing the entire Wall album, so it might be Roger Waters.

ahhhhh... Roger Waters is certainly a big name. Now I'm kind of worried that he may be the opening event. He's good but there's no way he could put on the show Paul and his band put on. This whole thing is making me so nervous!!

I read that Lady Gaga sold out in 2 minutes today.. 2 MINUTES.. If she old out that quickly, imagine a Paul McCartney concert, especially if it is the first event in this arena.

Doubt that he is opening the arena, probably just another concert for September or so. Just like Gaga and Rush.

People on Consol Energy Center's facebook page are saying they heard Bruce Springsteen is in the rumormill.. I guess WDVE (Pittsburgh Classic Rock station) was saying that... This is getting to be so frustrating. Bruce comes to Pittsburgh all the time, so he wouldn't be THAT big of a deal. We need a fresh face to the Pittsburgh concert scene.. like Paul!!

Won't be Bruce, you can guarantee that one. He was asked to be the first artist to open up the new Giants/Jets stadium, which is in New Jersey and he turned it down saying he isn't on tour and didn't want to do it. If he turns down his own hometown offer, then there is just no way he will be special to Pittsburgh. Now Pearl Jam is a good suggestion as someone said because they announced a mini tour and skipped Pittsburgh again and they never skip Pittsburgh, but I think this show being announced on Monday isn't the opener of the new arena. I think if it was they would say something along the lines "big huge announcement on concert opening the new arena".

Good points Matt. After thinking about what you said, I can see the promotors throwing out a lot of shows in September to put Pittsburgh on the concert map to possibly attract that big opening event they are looking for. It's also a great way to keep everyone's suspense.. then they will probably announce the huge opening event after the hype has settled a bit. Any of these names are pretty big anyway. Rush, Waters, Pearl Jam.. Good variety and major talent. I'm starting to think we won't hear anything about the opening event for a while. If it is Paul, he tends to wait for the last minute anyway. And if they are still trying to lock a deal with Paul, getting these other big names in here is a great way to lure him in and show him where the hot concert spot of the moment is at!

Monday's announcement is looking like another Lady Gaga show because it sold out in 2 minutes. Someone told me her schedule is open for another Pittsburgh show.

Yep.. I checked on her site and Sept 6th was left open in her tour itinerary. Now.. if we get Paul here.. I'm certain there would be 2 dates. Last time he was at the Civic Arena in 1990 he did 2 shows here also!
