And now the time is near....

There is no comparing Paul to Dylan. I saw Dylan probably 30 years ago and was bored to tears. Never saw him again. Didn't understand a lyric he sang. I always leave Paul concerts on a high but I have attended some shows where Paul was definitely not at his best in the past 8 or 9 years. Paul is the only artist who gives me that high. I don't think any other artist ever will. I want Paul to enjoy live, enjoy his marriage, enjoy his children and grandchildren. He could keep busy archiving all of his stuff since he's such a keeper of everything he's ever done. He could find the picture Linda took of me! I don't want him going out with a reputation as a Las Vegas lounge performer.
-
There is little danger of the likes of Paul McCartney ever being regarded as just a "Las Vegas lounge singer" and yes, he is enjoying himself vastly, as he deserves. Obviously has bestowed enormous delight on gazillions of concert goers, and continues to do so. It makes sense that some out of all these throngs were led to explore his later solo works, having loved his concert so much. And then their pleasure in his music grew and grew, greatly blessing their lives They have a wondrous vast catalogue to explore. One feels confident he will add to that "songbook" of his with many more fantastic original songs.

I do think that Paul didn't sound as bad as many made him out to be during this latest performance. I don't think he was at his best but it was better then X-factor and the first song in SNL (which may not have been Paul's fault). I do think that the fear of Paul doing the same at the Olympics is very real. but then I remember the Superbowl and he sounded great there (though there is a rumor the sound wasn't live as evidenced by hearing Paul count off a song when he wasn't at the mic...but that's just a rumor). I do think he needs to stop with the slow songs at these short televised appearances. they seem to be the hardest for him.

Well, just seconds ago I read from a poster at the main site that Paul's Diamond Jubilee "Let it Be" sounded "very sexy" to her. Reminds me again that art appreciation is subjective. I liked his singing that too, it provided a sensitive soulful introspective moment to the concert.

Paul is a big boy and longtime music industry vet, and doesn't need "protecting." .
I think he needs "advising." Unfortunately I don't believe he's the type to take any, and moreover, I don't think any of the sycophants around him will offer any...

I went to a meeting that went over and I ended up missing the concert. I know Paul is getting Older. I somehow cannot see him up there with a walker dancing around with a nurse and such love doris

Paul has dug a big whole for himself by becoming as a person commented on another website, "Mr.Beatle". Of course that has made people only think about what he acheived 43-50 years ago and not in the years since. This is not helped by four out of the five songs he performed at the jubilee being Beatles songs! Now I have to admit his work in the Beatles is my favourite out of his career, but this makes it look like he has done absolutely nothing and lets haters say stupid comments like "He's nothing compared to Lennon" or "Never wrote a decent song in his life!". These kind of performances just give those types of people further ammo to throw at McCartney fans, as well as make people who aren't familiar with him to say he's past it.
-
A big part of the live appearances problem lies in the fact that aged 70 (in a week or so ), he is trying to be in looks & vocally "Beatle Paul" & he succeeds in neither these days. If he waltzed on stage with un-dyed hair, cut shorter ( to stop looking like Ken Dodd ) & sang some stuff off C&CITBY etc. in smaller venues in a vocal range he could sustain, I think he could retrieve some later career credibility amongst old & new fans alike.........yeah I know i'm dreaming !! Far to unlikely...he will play it safe now till the end i'm afraid.

yes you keep dreaming maccamad. this thread is like banging your head against a brick wall. although it is more than annoying to be called some kind of'non fan', 'merchant of doom and gloom' or 'naysayer' by people who dont even come close to me as a mccartney fan. certain posters despite their own advanced years need to grow up a little bit and learn how to state their opinion [however wrong] in a better way. this board should be for educated debate between mccartney fans of all types sharing many different types of opinion.

Couldn't agree more Lazy mate, I am a fan, with the exception of Kisses & the classical stuff, my house is full of albums, singles Cd's, books etc, etc......but i'm obviously not a fan 'cos I dare say that live most days he just doesn't cut the mustard anymore, as he once did. At last though it does seem that many more on this board are beginning to see these issues, there are still those who refuse to see ( or hear ) the obvious. When he gets round to releasing his new batch of songs, I will be there on day one to buy it & no doubt love it.....but live shows....keep em. How the hell anyone can say he looks or sounds as good as he once did is beyond me, I never thought I'd see the day when I could honestly say that Cliff ,Tom & Elton looked & sounded better than my musical Idol.....sad times.

great point 'maccamad' and it is very sad. as the great kenny rodgers once said youve gotta Know when to walk away Know when to run on a live stage context mccartney should have quit whilst he was ahead. he is now officially doing his reputation more harm than good. hope the family are all good 'maccamad'...ours are just fine. thats me off to work again.speak you soon

Which "official" or "official body" makes this assertion then? I love evidence based debate ..... Martin

It could be said Paul has become a parody of himself, The Beatles, the hair, the collarless jackets all hark back to a bygone era which Paul remembers with great enthusiasm, this is a common trait in people as they get older, this could go some way to explaining the over-bloated Beatles set-list and Paul's over exuberance in everything Beatles. With that said Paul will continue to tour, maybe not as much as some fans expect, but someone needs to have the guts to tell him when something isn't working, Paul is surrounded with a family who love him, surely one of them should be stepping up to the mark by telling him certain songs don't work any more or as someone suggested, he should be encouraged to visit a vocal coach, the latter I can't see happening as Paul is a strong minded individual who never followed trends, he was the one who set them which many continue to follow to this day.

I agree with this post entirely. I don't think he needs to give up the televised performances just work with songs that are better on his voice. He did great on All My Loving and on ObLaDi is sounded more like he was trying to sort of improvise at first or something rather then just having a hard time. but his not-so-great performances on these televised shows is becoming common. Then, the grammies...they were nearly perfect, weren't they?

the bottom line is he wasn't the worst on the night, a whole host of the younger "ahem" superstars sounded as if rats crawled up their arses and got stuck in their windpipes!!

I didn't say anyone wasn't a "fan" on this thread. I do find it bizarre that at this site of all places you can't praise Macca wholeheartedly without being pounced on and his so-called shortcomings pointed out. Many people don't think he sounds all that bad "live" on t.v. But God help you if you dare to say that. Even here. Martin by the way has always backed up what he states with a plethora of facts and statistics, or almost always, seems to almost have the mind of a lawyer or such. He asked where's the "official" proof and statements that Macca is going downhill real bad, and the poster was unable to come up with anything "official." But sneered at Martin anyway. Elton John must have known his voice wasn't up to par but that didn't stop him from singing at the Diamond Jubilee concert. He sounded the worst of anyone I heard that night. I still liked seeing him there. Most people have the sense not to expect rock stars or anyone to look and sound as they did starting out many decades ago. They have empathy and understanding.

Elton had to cancel some concert here I think it was in Vegas a few weeks ago & was hospitalized. So he actually *did* have an excuse.
