This is the point where my head explodes. This internet opinion piece is talking about who should have closed the Olympics opening ceremonies: Paul or One Direction. Seriously. http://celebs.gather.com/viewArticle.action?articleId=281474981517407
Seriously do we think Olympic stadium would have broken out in a One Direction song yesterday? It seems ridiculous that any of this stuff is taken seriously.
from where i was watching the whole olympic stadium only gave a luke warm response to 'hey jude' anyway.....part of the problem was that macca came on way too late at the end of a long night after athletes paraded around a track for 2 hours....forgetting what anyone thinks of maccas performance [lets not go there again ] i thought the scheduling was bizzarr and wrong......'one diection' im not even sure who there are,but im sure they are a modern band ,so YES they should have been on instead of macca...time for the old brigade to move on ...this is not their time anymore
The scheduling was indeed bizarre. Wasn't the ceremony over 3 hours long? That's a lot of time to sit in a stadium, or at home, and get tired. There's not much that I can do for over 3 hours and maintain the same level of excitement and energy the whole time... I'm tutoring 3 graders right now, and one of them is a huge One Direction fan. I think they're a boy singing group, not a real band, so I'm happy that they weren't anywhere near to ceremony.

One direction are a JOKE to music.

still alot of youth throughout the world would have appreciated the IN young band or performers being on.....like i said the old guard need to move on...its great to hear their songs, its great that the likes of macca still keeps people happy with his 'oldies nostalga act' but seriously this isnt his time...wether he is better than these bands is irrelevant....its not mccartneys time anymore and it showed. infact the little singalong in the cycle stadium the other day with paul doing a wave is all that was required for the opening ceremony if it was written in stone that 'hey jude' had to be the closing act..a huge video screen with 1968 paul singing this wonderfull song would have done just fine and no less dramatic..infact it would have spared us the 'embarrasing uncle' at a wedding ending

Most of today's youth don't know what to appreciate, so they just cling to what looks like them. I had a few friends on facebook tell me how much they loved the olympics and watched Paul because they saw him at The Grammy's. Also, I think the term "old nostalga" is irrelevant, and incorrectly spelled. It wasn't done for nostalgia, it was done because it was one of the best ways to close the ceremony. A video screen would've been horrid. Do you know how many people already think all the beatles are dead?! Seeing him on a screen instead of in person would only verify their false beliefs!

Their big hit, I don't know the name...is a pretty decent piece of pop writing. Is the performance good? No. Is the accompaniment good? No, it is beyond abnoxious. But if a good pop-rock group did it, I think it would be fairly enjoyable.

My 14 year old daughter loves Paul, loves the Beatles, and loves One Direction. One Direction would have been wrong to close the Olympics because that stadium wasn't filled with 14 year old girls.

Man, we are a lot of people who are sick and tired of that kind of music. One direction doesn't make music, they are 5 pretty faces that sing to teenagers and those teenagers are not even 50% of the people who watched the ceremony. The beatles and Macca never have had that number of haters that One Direction and Bieber have and for that reason a lot of young people are starting to listen to old music like beatles, rolling stones, pink floyd, led zeppelin, etc. We (young people) really love when they appear. You enjoyed their music for a long time, but we haven't. For us it's like real music let the new trash music win.

You're not sure who they are and that's why you're saying they should have been on instead of Macca. I hate their music and I know a LOT of people that turn off the telly when they appear. The old brigade haven't moved on because musicians like One Direction are trash. People from latinoamerica are still laughing for the "One Erection" video (one person making fun of their fans). One Direction (for me) is like a band with 5 biebers.
I love hearing new bands if I enjoy their music of course, but the spot Macca had at the end of the opening of the Olympics should be earned not awarded based on the criteria if a band is new or old.

Paul McCartney is like Bing Crosby to a lot of youths these days. FYI I like Bing as well and i'm 18. One Direction emerged from the X Factor, that tells you all you need to know about their credibility!

My son who is 16 and his friends love a lot of my "old" music (Macca, Beatles Zep, Floyd,Aerosmith, Bad Company, Stones, Purple etc. etc.) along with some more recent bands. That's why I started taking them to Macca and other "old" bands concerts over the years. They seem to enjoy it as much as I do.

One Direction keeps the little girls happy.....that is their job. They will come and go just like all the other boy bands did. Let them enjoy it while they can.

wix im pretty sure my spelling is bad..no need to point it out,it makes you look like a a knitpicker'...and that word has extra meaning on here.... 'one direction' im sure i have no clue who they are,im pretty sure i would hate their music however im pretty sure they speak to the worlds youth far more than 70 year old passed his best mccartney....im sorry folks but i stand by my point...time for macca and his fellow baby boomer legends to move along...for such events.....who knows this boy band 'one direction' might evolve and shock you all.after all 'the beatles' too where nothing more than a pop music 'boy band' of their day..of course they evolved ,but hey they where given the chance to evolve..........

"The old guard" is a topic I often got a mind, those born in the UK at the 1940s. There are 2 problems: 1 They're getting old, retire, unactive... 2 They're not really replaced with a new guard that can be compared to the old The problem with 2 is that music industry is dead, so it hardly can come out with a replacement, it's much easier to promote the old guard that to introduce a new guard... Sort of like is easier to promote Batman 7 or "Spiderman is back again" than a whole new movie. When asked to "retire and making way for the young kids" , Paul in the last Rolling Stone interview Twenty years ago, when Paul McCartney turned 50, he remembers his then-manager pushing the idea of retirement. "It's only right," he was told. "You really don't want to go beyond 50, it's going to get embarrassing." In June, McCartney will be 70 ("I'm never going to believe I'm 70, I don't care what you say," he says. "There's a little cell in my brain that's never going to believe that"), and he still has no plans to stop touring or recording. "You get the argument 'Make way for the young kids,' " he says. "And you think, 'Fuck that, let them make way for themselves. If they're better than me, they'll beat me.' Read more: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/cover-story-excerpt-paul-mccartney-20120215#ixzz22gzWDRrk I personally thank that, at least, we have the old guard left. Though they're meant to decline, all things must pass away.

I'm sure the songs will go like "I'll never let you go/I can't live without you" and kinds of emotional abuse stuff as usual. :

That's the one the little girl I'm tutoring likes! I can't tell them apart, so I was asking her which one Harry is: Me: "Which one is he? The one whose hair goes like this...[me pantomiming spiky hair], or like this...[me pantomiming Beatle hair], or the one who's extra hairy? Hairy Harry! " Her: " : How old ARE you? "
