'Road' is the best track from the album 'New'

"Road" may have a great lyric, but music-wise it's just bland. I much prefer "Alligator". This way or another, "New" does not have any typical mega hit-songs Macca has spoilt us with in all the decades gone.
That's just nonsense. There's ageism in music for a start, lack of radio airplay etc etc. Let's say Paul released 'Get Back' as a new song now, or 'Let It Be' etc etc, it would have no bigger chance of being a major commercial success as the likes of 'I can bet' or 'Alligator'.

Road is my favorite on the album, too. A great way to end the record.
-
"Road" is a fairly lackluster song by all accounts. The real hit on this album is "I Can Bet," but I agree that it doesn't have the mega-hit type songs that can be found on "Band on the Run," "Venus and Mars," and "Wings at the Speed of Sound." Certainly the radio has changed dramatically since these days (for the worse, for sure!), but I think Macca still has a lot of mega-hit great tunes in him!

Apples-to-oranges. "Road" was not intended to be a "hit" -- just a killer track.

I see Road as an "album track". Not a chance to ever be a single, and a long way off being the best song off New, or any album. But fulfils its role as "something different" to break the vibe, and create a new tension.

Those aforementioned Beatles releases MAY not break the airwaves of today, but as much as I like "I Can Bet" and "Alligator", they shrink (in a "frightened turtle" way) to any comparison with Get Back and Let It Be. I know what you mean, though, but who is to say that if Paul's new album of 2013 threw off one of those songs - Get Back and/or Let it Be, as new and unheard releases - that it wouldn't have catapulted the album into a new stratosphere. That's how good those songs were. They break through any time barrier, in my opinion. And as much as I like and enjoy New, there is no parallel to those two songs on the album. If there was - a Get Back or Let it Be - there is no reason why it could not break through "ageism" and shoot the album and singles to number one.

I COMPLETELY disagree with you The bottom line is that if Macca wrote the best song he's ever written and released it as a single in 2014, the chances are it wouldn't be a big commercial hit, given his age, look, the fact that the industry is more image obsessed than ever and the way music playlist systems have changed since the 60's and 70's. Regarding 'Road', this is still my favourite track on the album, blows me away as far as production, vocals, arrangement, atmosphere etc . I didn't say it was necessarily the best 'song'. There is SO much more to a great track than lyrics.

I have to agree with you both...Road is full of atmosphere...

A good song is Road. Fulfils its role well on the album. Really well. But, without being inflammatory, I would not put it anywhere near McCartney's best 1o0 songs ever-written. Nowhere near it.
-
New, Queenie Eye and I can bet would easily be #1 on sixties or seventies. The world has changed, people are getting stupid enough to enjoy what is really good. The major worlwide hit last year was that shit gangman style. A great artist like Rufus Wainwright, for instance, on the pasr could be one if the biggest. Today he is only one more, but he has his public and that's great. You know what is a hit? Justin stupid Bieber. The radio is a shame. Paul can t be worried cause he is probaly the biggest artist even thwse days, but not on radio, get real. His public don't even buy records or listen to radio, mtv, vh1 or other stuff. But when the guy makes shows he get #1 again and beats everyone

Still a great song though. And it depends if you necessarily need a classic song to make a classic track? I say no.

Funny response. As I never saw you before, I wouldn't know. Nice pic though!

Totally OT but... LOL yes I did shave the beard off awhile ago. Lots of gray was coming in and I looked so much older. Plus my Jim Morrison LA Woman phase was over. Thanks for the compliments oobu and audi!
