2017 Setlist Speculation Thread
-
I think this is different since he shook stuff up around Desert Trip, adding- Junior's Farm I've Just Seen A Face Got to Get You Into My Life A Day In The Life/Give Peace A Chance I Wanna Be Your Man Day Tripper Also, You Won't See Me, Temporary Secretary, Save Us, etc were dropped for the Desert Trip shows. Quite a bit to speculate about. Sure, most of these are standard songs, but still... I'd like to see Drive My Car and Things We Said Today come back, but I know he usually saves them for soundcheck

But that was a separated one-off (two-off...) special event. The regular gigs in the same period were a new leg, just like the upcoming April gigs will be, and the set was indeed One On One - I now understand the tour name - as half a year before that. With one exception, 'Junior's Farm' being brought back one night instead of 'Letting Go', which was already a "going in circles" addition anyway. Maybe late this year 'Listen To What The Man Said' as fresh addition at that spot lol...

I'd love to see Letting Go in the encore, but not if it means Hi Hi Hi is dropped. If the Save Us spot was switched with Junior's Farm or Jet it would be nice. Junior's Farm is one of my favorite Wings tracks and is a blast to hear live. I'd also love to see him open a show with Back in the USSR. It would be a perfect opener and is far better than the Hard day's Night/Eight Days A Week he's used for the last few years

The best opening he's done that I've seen was Venus & Mars/Rockshow! Even if most of the song was cut out. Magical Mystery Tour worked really well live and while 8 Days a Week was fun, I don't think it quite works as the opening track though

Hello Goodbye was great in 2002, but nothing will ever beat 1976 Venus and Mars/Rockshow! God, he was in his prime and freaking fantastic!! And I was there! *THUD* http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/wings/1976/the-omni-atlanta-ga-33d7a029.html P.S. I did not write the F word! I wrote f r e a k i n g and it censored it to look like I had!

Venus & Mars was FANTASTIC! It was such a surprise! I had tears in my eyes. BUT I wish he did the entire song.

It's time to hear finally "From me to you"!
-
I have been campaigning for What You're Doing for years, but he probably couldn't hit the high notes now.
-
I think he could still pull off My Brave Face...

Agreed!

My Flowers choice is for a "Distraction" rendition!!

I'm gonna make a bold prediction here and say that it's within the realm of possibility that he'll surprise us all and open with My Brave Face at the Budokan (or at least play it). It's unlikely, I know, but stranger things have happened. Also, seeing that the reissue is out and he's coincided new/refreshed additions with reissues before (notable 1985 and Bluebird in 2010, Maybe I'm Amazed in 2011 and Ram On in 2012. I might count Listen to What The Man Said in 2013 as well, since he was already working on that reissue by then). The only thing is that there was nothing for TOW/POP. It also seems to me that he pulled out all the stops with this one and made it the biggest reissue since RAM. That may mean he's been inspired playing back the songs (similar to how Temporary Secretary ended up in the show) and decided to play one. Out of them, My Brave Face and Put it There are the only two I could see him doing. My Brave Face is well known enough for him to open a specialty gig with like Budokan and then tuck it later in the show for the rest of the shows. (purely speculation based on the past reissues)

I agree with what you said. But I don't think we should compare the past reissues with this one. The "Flowers In The Dirt" reissue is too big for him not to play any songs from it. The other reissues were a little bit different since this is the first reissue with the new label, and the tons of promotion they are giving "Flowers In The Dirt." So I could see the 2017 setlist having Flowers songs on it, unlike the past reissue/tour dates that followed it which didn't include some reissued songs. With that being said, this is my speculation: He will take out "Save Us" and replace it with "My Brave Face." It's a perfect fit! The second song live is usually a solo song. I can totally hear the band going right into "My Brave Face" after the opener. He could also play "Put It There" and/or "This One" towards the end of the beginning or the middle and discuss a bit of his collaboration with Elvis Costello and the reissue.

I personally don't see how this is more majorly promoted than the 'Ram' and 'Wings Over America' reissues. Colour my surprised if he adds a single song in his setlist. And I'm afraid 'My Brave Face' is completely out of his range. The fast phrasing on each pre-chorus is becoming too hard, as we can hear on 'Save Us' live. And he's hitting a few B5's on 'My Brave Face', which on a best day are sounding like this these days, last note of the bridge:
It's harder than 'Looking For Changes', and we know how that sounded 20 years later: -
Maybe Figure of Eight. It's a pretty easy song

It's easy but it's in a weird part of his range for the whole song. That said, he sang it horribly flat on the record, so why not live too?
-
"The day is done" is another song that would be fine for his actual voice range.

Cool that he was willing to dust that one off (far from my favorite song, but nice that he still remembers some of those exist). That performance wouldn't make an official release, but it's no worse than anything else in the set. Is there a reason he couldn't take a lower harmony in the pre chorus of My Brave Face (well -in everything except the verses, actually) and let Abe sing the melody? That would probably sound fine.

The casual fan which probably makes up 90% of his concert audience is probably clueless about the reissue and the majority of them probably never heard of FITD - lol. Maybe the reissue stuff will make him actually revisit the album and try to play something from it live which would be nice but I am not counting on it. Hope I am wrong.

We are not going to hear a single one of the these songs live. The ONLY way, would be if some circumstance occurs for Elvis Costello to join Paul on stage. That could probably make it happen.
