2017 Setlist Speculation Thread

5th-beatle:
A few interesting questions were asked at Paul's latest live Q&A. The first one was about the song "ode to a koala bear" slipping into the setlist in Australia. Paul looked intrigued by the suggestion and replied that he hadn't thought about that. Perhaps he will think about it now?
That was my question! Was really stocked to have Paul answer it but was pretty underwhelmed by Tim. I found his ramblings really pretentious and he kept interrupting Paul. Thought I'd ask for "Ode" so that it would be a bit left field so I'm glad I took him by surprise Poor Paul, his favourite thing about Australia (wildlife) is so depleted compared to the 60's, 70's and 90's. Doubt he would see many roadside Roo's and 'koala type bears' in the major cities

Hope not. Music aside, the song is garbage.
-
Is better to hear Koala Beer instead the boring "Let me roll it" for the millionth time

Congratulations on getting your question answered, it was one the most interesting questions asked. Fingers crossed that you'll get the song!

He's probably already forgotten the conversation. That would be about as useless an addition as "Temporary Secretary".
Which means he will probably add it to the set list - lol !!

Probably thinks if only that song was added "Pure McCartney" would have soared up the charts - lol I can see the Australian tour now. McCartney adds this song and introduces it by saying "I bet you all did not know John loved koala bears and throws in some PETA reference to ensure good applause - ha ha

______________________________________________________ I needed a good laugh this morning. At least we would have a couple of new stories. A Michael Jackson story could be included since it was the b-side to Say Say Say.

I find it so ironic that the last few days going on the PM Website (announcing the Columbia and Australia additions to the One on One Tour) you are hearing "Souvenir" being played. Another great hidden Gem that Paul never played live. Don't think he could do it today however.

Does make you wonder that all these good songs are on his web site but never played live and I think you are right and he could not do that song vocally anymore.

While I'm all about Paul adding new Songs (especially Solo) I personally wouldn't mind "Letting Go" on the upcoming US leg Setlist. While he has been playing it, he hasn't overplayed it like "Let Me Roll it" that has been played on every tour since 1976. Paul has just played the latter to death and I'm at the point where I don't want to hear it. And I loved the song on the 2002 show in Philadelphia. Last night, Rock Show was on my MTV channel and I have to say that "Letting Go" might have been my favorite song during the concert. Watching Paul effortlessly playing that bass with the live horns is still a great moment as a fan. Relatively speaking, Paul can still sing it fairly well in 2017 and it is a great song (one of the most underrated during that explosive mid Wings period). It also at least balances the Setlist towards Post Beatles songs. I just don't think that 4-5 Seconds and Temporary Secretary hold a candle to "Letting Go" as "song". I do wish that Paul would have a live horn section like he had in 1976 but at this late time in the overall tour, we know that it won't happen. Something like that would/should have happened at the beginning of the "One on One" tour.

Yep, "Letting Go" is excellent song. The song from that album I wish he would have done when he could still sing it was "Beware My Love". Yep, loved it when he had live horn section. Would be nice now, it is not like he can't afford it- ha ha

Now that he's coming to Mexico City I really hope they work through "The Back Seat of My Car" this time around. If not it'd be cool to get "Every Night" or "Hope of Deliverance" again since they got good reception last time.

No way in hell could he pull off "Back Seat of My Car" now. But there are great never- or rarely-done solo songs he could probably manage, e.g. The World Tonight, Friends to Go, Beautiful Night, Promise to You Girl, No Values.

Exactly and I would add "That Was Me", "Little Willow", "Early Days", "Take It Away", "I Can Bet", "My Brave Face" etc.

______________________________________________________ Couldn't agree more with Bruce and Yankeefan. After seeing Paul in 2002 (Philadelphia and Atlantic City shows) I thought that Paul was arguably the greatest performer on the planet. He was daring and his voice was still quite good. The part of the show where the Band left and with his acoustic guitar he played Blackbird, Here Today, and We Can Work it Out was just awesome. How many "stars" would have the guts to do that! He was the consummate "live" musician in 2002.. Remember what Howard Stern said on his radio show at the time. After that tour however he became way too "safe" in my opinion. He never took the time to evaluate what he was playing at his live shows relative to his overall music career. Instead of going through his Post Wings' albums with each subsequent tour and analyzing what really good songs he had never (or rarely) performed, he just continued to play it safe and easy doing many of the same songs. Unfortunately he became, in my opinion, the world's greatest "oldies" act playing the hits with a rare exception or two. Great for the first timers and casual fans but not good for his legacy in my opinion. As we all know, at 75 Paul is never going to play the songs you listed above. I'm 68 and I know how I feel when I wake up each morning. Unfortunately those are the type of songs that should have been played back in 2002 and onward. He still could (and should) have played the 12 signature Beatle/Wings songs for the first timers but there was plenty of room for a half dozen great Solo songs like you mention on each tour. I will be shocked if we get any changes in Miami. Maybe a Beatles song (e.g. Penny Lane) but that will be it. Hope I'm wrong!

I loved his acoustic part of the set back in 2002, would have loved him to have added "Little Willow". Even now, he should add "Early Days" which would be great song in acoustic part of a show. We don't have to worry about his voice on that one because it is song recorded with an old man voice. IMO there was no reason he had to play it safe. He is Paul McCartney and if the 25 Beatle/Wings hits are not enough for the first timers he should have said screw them (lol) and played whatever he wanted the other 10 songs in the show. He might have had fun doing different songs from his solo career and I bet the band would have loved it also. I guess what also irritates me about his set list is that when he does add something different it is usually something I really dislike. (exp. Temporary Secretary). Like you have mentioned, he adds a song like "Benefit For Mr. Kite" from "Sgt. Pepper" instead of "Penny Lane" for example. Years back he would play something like "C Moon" which is very ordinary at best and we both can name better B side songs. Also, he would play this B side but not "Take It Away" which reached the top 10 in the US - SMH. I will be shocked also if there are any real changes to Tokyo set list. Most of the cities on this tour he has not played (except NY area) in a long time or has never played there. This means the same old thing regarding songs and stories.

I'm probably in the minority, but I wouldn't mind if he brought back in an odd cover song or two, like 'Ain't That A Shame' and 'Twenty Flight Rock' in '89-'90, or 'Good Rockin' Tonight' in '93. If only, just for my ears to hear SOMETHING different... I know a cover would take up a precious setlist spot that could be instead used for a solo song, but whatever...

I loved those covers also during those tours. I have always said nobody does 50's rock covers better than McCartney. The RDR album was great and had some of his best vocals ever IMO. If he was going to do a cover from that album, I would pick "Brown Eyed Handsome Man". BTW - His original songs from that album were pretty darn good also.
