2017 Setlist Speculation Thread

I'm probably in the minority, but I wouldn't mind if he brought back in an odd cover song or two, like 'Ain't That A Shame' and 'Twenty Flight Rock' in '89-'90, or 'Good Rockin' Tonight' in '93. If only, just for my ears to hear SOMETHING different... I know a cover would take up a precious setlist spot that could be instead used for a solo song, but whatever...
I loved those covers also during those tours. I have always said nobody does 50's rock covers better than McCartney. The RDR album was great and had some of his best vocals ever IMO. If he was going to do a cover from that album, I would pick "Brown Eyed Handsome Man". BTW - His original songs from that album were pretty darn good also.
(both posts!)

I would like, talking about cover, to hear something from Beatles stuff, like "A taste of Honey" or "Money", the last one have been sung by Paul some years ago for a special private gig (there are also some little brief of the performance). Also "Some other guy" would be cool! Like "Money" it was a song sung by John but Paul during a 1989 soundcheck have play it in Milan!

Now that he's coming to Mexico City I really hope they work through "The Back Seat of My Car" this time around. If not it'd be cool to get "Every Night" or "Hope of Deliverance" again since they got good reception last time.
No way in hell could he pull off "Back Seat of My Car" now. But there are great never- or rarely-done solo songs he could probably manage, e.g. The World Tonight, Friends to Go, Beautiful Night, Promise to You Girl, No Values.
Exactly and I would add "That Was Me", "Little Willow", "Early Days", "Take It Away", "I Can Bet", "My Brave Face" etc.
______________________________________________________ Couldn't agree more with Bruce and Yankeefan. After seeing Paul in 2002 (Philadelphia and Atlantic City shows) I thought that Paul was arguably the greatest performer on the planet. He was daring and his voice was still quite good. The part of the show where the Band left and with his acoustic guitar he played Blackbird, Here Today, and We Can Work it Out was just awesome. How many "stars" would have the guts to do that! He was the consummate "live" musician in 2002.. Remember what Howard Stern said on his radio show at the time. After that tour however he became way too "safe" in my opinion. He never took the time to evaluate what he was playing at his live shows relative to his overall music career. Instead of going through his Post Wings' albums with each subsequent tour and analyzing what really good songs he had never (or rarely) performed, he just continued to play it safe and easy doing many of the same songs. Unfortunately he became, in my opinion, the world's greatest "oldies" act playing the hits with a rare exception or two. Great for the first timers and casual fans but not good for his legacy in my opinion. As we all know, at 75 Paul is never going to play the songs you listed above. I'm 68 and I know how I feel when I wake up each morning. Unfortunately those are the type of songs that should have been played back in 2002 and onward. He still could (and should) have played the 12 signature Beatle/Wings songs for the first timers but there was plenty of room for a half dozen great Solo songs like you mention on each tour. I will be shocked if we get any changes in Miami. Maybe a Beatles song (e.g. Penny Lane) but that will be it. Hope I'm wrong!
I loved his acoustic part of the set back in 2002, would have loved him to have added "Little Willow". Even now, he should add "Early Days" which would be great song in acoustic part of a show. We don't have to worry about his voice on that one because it is song recorded with an old man voice. IMO there was no reason he had to play it safe. He is Paul McCartney and if the 25 Beatle/Wings hits are not enough for the first timers he should have said screw them (lol) and played whatever he wanted the other 10 songs in the show. He might have had fun doing different songs from his solo career and I bet the band would have loved it also. I guess what also irritates me about his set list is that when he does add something different it is usually something I really dislike. (exp. Temporary Secretary). Like you have mentioned, he adds a song like "Benefit For Mr. Kite" from "Sgt. Pepper" instead of "Penny Lane" for example. Years back he would play something like "C Moon" which is very ordinary at best and we both can name better B side songs. Also, he would play this B side but not "Take It Away" which reached the top 10 in the US - SMH. I will be shocked also if there are any real changes to Tokyo set list. Most of the cities on this tour he has not played (except NY area) in a long time or has never played there. This means the same old thing regarding songs and stories.
_________________________________________________________ I agree with everything Yankeefan says above. Unfortunately, over the years he's "given into" many critics who have said his best years were over after 1976. Beginning in 1989, his tours would only do Solo Songs concurrent with the new album he was promoting at the time. Analyzing 2 of his best Solo albums (Post 1980) Tug of War and Flaming Pie, here's what we got in all of his live shows and tours up to 2017: "Tug of War Album" Ebony and Ivory Here Today (mainly because it is a great, great tribute song for John) "Flaming Pie Album" Flaming Pie Calico Skies Just think of the songs from those 2 Solo albums alone that he has never played. Compare Paul to his contemporaries like Billy Joel, Elton John, Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan. Yes, they play their hits but they always play their songs that they consider to be great songs that were not hits. They are non only playing for the fans but they are playing for their overall Catalog and terrific songs that were "missed" by radio. In 1976, when he hit the road for Wings Over America, Paul was daring. He wanted to "prove" to the world and the critics that he was still writing great Post Beatle songs. And he did it only playing 5 Beatle songs. He started the show with Venus & Mars/Rock show (not a real hit) and ended the show with Soily (a rocker that 90% of the audience didn't even know but he had them rocking. Talk about daring and courageous. Too bad that Paul didn't have that same drive on all his tours after Linda died. You would think he would again want to prove that he had written some great songs after Wings. Not doing songs like Take It Away, Tug of War (the song), Wanderlust, Pound is Sinking, Little Willow, The World Tonight, Beautiful Night, Young Boy and Souvenir is a real shame in my opinion. He could have spread a lot of those great songs over all his tours/shows beginning in 2002 and still do plenty of the Beatle/Wings signature songs that as Paul always says...the average audience wants to hear. Unfortunately, very few people know these songs and that to me is the real crime.
-
I totally agree with you, but he did play Great Day live at an Adopt-A-Minefield gala, and he did play/lipsync to Young Boy at the Oprah show.
-
also, did I dream this, or did he once play a snippet of Dress Me Up As A Robber at some strange event?

Yep, 2002 tour was the key. As I said before, he had not toured in 9 years and had a brand new touring band (Wix was the only holdover). This was the perfect time for him to do anything he wanted, crowd was not expecting a Beatle show and everybody was excited to see him after almost a decade of not touring. He played a bunch from DR but he could have done a few of those songs you mentioned and still given people plenty of hits - oh well. Also, once again look at the songs McCartney picked off those two great albums. I understand "Flaming Pie" was the title song but it is one of my least favorite songs off that album and notice he would not do the same with the song "Tug Of War". "Ebony and Ivory" was done one tour but that type of song never works when it is a duet with famous artist and that artist is not there. "Here Today" as you said was done because it is a tribute song. "Calico Skies" is wonderful song and glad he did that one at the very least. The one thing I will give McCartney credit for especially in comparison to Billy Joel is that he is creating new music (Joel gave that up in 1993) and plays it live when it is his most current album

Now that we're a week out, here's my realistic wishlist. This would be THE most I think he would do, and it all hinges on him doing one thing that he very VERY scarcely does, and that's acknowledge releases/anniversaries... 1. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band 2. Getting Better 3. Got To Get You Into My Life 4. My Brave Face 5. Drive My Car 6. Let Me Roll It 7. Paperback Writer 8. My Valentine 9. 1985 10. Maybe I'm Amazed 11. Every Night 12. Put it There 13. Hope of Deliverance 14. Love Me Do 15. And I Love Her 16. Blackbird 17. Here Today 18. Queenie Eye 19. New 20. The Fool on The Hill 21. Fixing a Hole 22. Lady Madonna 23. Eleanor Rigby 24. Lovely Rita 25. Being For The Benefit of Mr. Kite! 26. Something 27. Penny Lane 28. Band on The Run 29. Back in The USSR 30. Let it Be 31. Live and Let Die 32. Hey Jude ENCORE 33. Yesterday 34. Get Back 35. Sgt. Pepper's Reprise 36. A Day in The Life 37. Give Peace a Chance I would be absolutely over the moon with this. It includes eight songs I've never heard live before, and it's still super Beatle heavy which we all know is key forever. Thoughts?

Brown Eyed Handsome Man is my favorite Paul cover by far. He could spin it as a tribute to Chuck Berry

The Miami show takes place on Ringo's birthday so I expect 'Birthday' to be in the set for at least this show.

____________________________________________________________ WixRocks All of us could quibble over a few of the songs above but you are right...it is a realistic setlist that Paul could do and it does cover the latest reissues/anniversaries both Beatles and Solo. A setlist like this and I would buy a ticket for the Tampa show no question. I still like the job that Paul and the Band do on "Hard Day's Night" so I would keep that as an opener and maybe do the full Sgt. Pepper treatment later (e.g. the 1st song after the acoustic set). And you are right...you have to be realistic. I personally would love if he dumped "Let Me Roll It" (he's played it to death and struggles to sing it) and Maybe I'm Amazed (he absolutely can't sing it anymore). That being said, I would buy a ticket in a heartbeat for some of the additions on your list. I would be wild about hearing songs like My Brave Face, Every Night, Put It There, Hope of Deliverance, Getting Better and Penny Lane. In a perfect world (and the more "daring" Paul that we had in 1976) I would be in favor of dropping the 2 New album songs in favor of a couple of other Solo songs for a true refreshment. I also think you are a little too heavy on Sgt. Pepper songs. In my opinion, changing out Mr. Kite and Fixing a Hole in favor of a couple of Wings or Solo songs would be even better. Unfortunately, we know that Paul isn't going to make even those minor changes on your realistic proposal. I had to laugh at one of the interviews in Japan where someone asked about doing a few songs from FITD. His response initially was somewhat positive and then his second thought (and real answer!) just killed it for me relative to attending a Tampa and/or NJ-NYC show. He said...but then we would have to pull things off the setlist. Are you kidding me? I laughed at that remark considering he has songs like 4-5 Seconds, Temporary Secretary and I wanna Be Your Man that no one would call signature songs. As I said, it is unfortunate. I would bet that we will get all 3 of those songs in Miami.

It is realistic and I am glad you like it but it really does nothing for me. The few songs I have never heard him do live have songs I really don't care about hearing. (exp. Benefit For Mr. Kite, My Valentine, Give Peace A Chance). Like BJ said, we all could nitpick each others set list with personal favorites but it is like banging your head against the wall actually thinking they would ever be done live.

_______________________________________________ Good point and I would bet that you'll be right. Obviously, Birthday is a song that everyone knows so the overwhelming % of 1st timers will love it. Not even close to one of my favorite Paul Beatle songs...just ok for me. If I was picking my top 30 Paul/Beatles songs, Birthday would not be on it. And it would not be a make it or break it song for me relative to attending the Tampa Show. But to each his/her own. I realize that some people really like it.

'Birthday' is not particularly one of my favorites either. But I'll be fine with it in Miami, as he's somehow never played it at any of my previous 8 shows I've seen spanning the last 27 years. (Plus July 7 actually is my birthday too.)

________________________________________________________ WixRocks, You bring up a very interesting possibility with your A Day in the Life/Give Peace a Chance proposal. If I was a Paul advisor (and his voice has truly deteriorated over the last 5 years as he now sounds) I would probably recommend to Paul that he adds these 2 songs just like he did on the Up and Coming tour (back in 2010). I wouldn't be shocked at all if that is one of the big surprises in Miami. There are a couple of reasons that this could actually happen. First of all, "A Day in the Life" is probably the most "signature" song on Sgt. Pepper (compared to Fixing a Hole and Mr. Kite) and Give Peace a Chance is so easy and still has a great universal message. Secondly, the former song is not as hard as others on your list to sing and the latter song becomes a total sing-along where the crowd just takes over. More than ever, Paul now needs even more "sing-along" type songs (e.g. Hey Jude, Love Me Do). I remember going to both Philadelphia shows (8/14 and 8/15 in 2010) and I thought "A Day in the Live and Give Peace a Chance" went over really well in an Arena Setting. Speaking of those 2010 Up and Coming Shows, I clearly remember the Setlist being very intisive for a big time Paul fan like me. While I still hoped for more Solo songs, he still had a lot of Beatle/Wing songs that were "New" for me. Compared to his recent Tokyo setlist, the setlist in those 2010 shows were much better for the serious Paul fan. Here are my examples: Venus & Mars/Rock Show - opener and since I missed the 1976 show, it was my 1st time Letting Go - again 1st time for me and it was awesome Highway - while not a big favorite, it was a new entry and gave a new Solo song 1985 - 1st time and it was awesome I've Just Seen a Face - 1st time for me and one of favorite Paul Beatle songs I'm Looking Through You - ditto and one of my favorite Paul Beatle songs And I Love Her - ditto and one of my favorite Paul Beatle songs Two of Us - ditto and one of my favorite Paul Beatle songs Dance Tonight - 1st time for me and it was a fun song Mrs. Vanderbilt - 1st time for me and another fun song Ram On - great surprise and again a 1st time for me Sing the Changes - loved this new Solo Song Ob-La-Di - 1st time and the crowd loved it I've Got a Feeling - 1st time and sounded great (Paul could sing a lot better then) Paperback Writer - again 1st time for me A Day in the Life/Give Peace a Chance - 1st time and it was very good Day Tripper - again 1st time Get Back - I think it was the 1st time and was fantastic As you can see, there was a lot of reasons for me to shell out the money. I was excited. One hook for me to go to both shows was that I've Just Seen a Face, And I Love her, I'm Looking Through You, and 2 of Us were the rotation songs. By attending the 2nd night I heard 2 more great Paul songs I had never heard. Plus since there was so many new "Beatle and Wings" songs I had never heard that there was never a doubt in my mind. In my opinion, the 2010 concerts were my last great Paul shows. The Setlist could have been "absolutely perfect" by substituting several songs that I had already heard multiple times from the earlier concerts (1990, 1993, 2002, 2005) for a few MORE SOLO Songs (so many to choose from). I would have loved great Solo Songs over tracks like Jet, Drive My Car, Got to Get You into My Life, Let Me Roll It, Let 'em In, My Love any day of the week just from the standpoint of variety. But looking at the list above, the incentives were surely there. I do understand that I'm just one person so to get "the perfect concert" is obviously unrealistic. I was a very happy person walking out of the arena on both nights. Conversely the setlist from Tokyo just doesn't seem to compare. Even the additions from "One on One" doesn't do it nearly as much like the "Up and Coming" tour. Songs like 4-5 Seconds, Temporary Secretary, I Wanna By Your Man, Mr. Kite, and My Valentine just can't compare to what I was getting in 2010. And I'm so tired of Let Me Roll It! I feel exactly like Yankeefan with the Tokyo setlist in general in this regard. As I have said before, for the 1st timers and more casual fans, they will love the show. For them, they will hear so many "signature songs" that they will have one of their best nights ever. I'm happy for them. For me and some of the serious fans here, it is another matter.

And actually, a lot of these songs were already introduced during the 'Out There' tour, and were carried over into 'One On One'. My biggest "issue" with One On One, is that it's too similar to Out There. My last shows were in May 2013. Let's say the upcoming Miami show is identical to the recent Tokyo shows, the only songs I've yet to hear live are: A Hard Day's Night, Temporary Secretary, FourFive Seconds, Love Me Do, Save Us, Queenie Eye, New. (When I saw the 'Out There' tour in 2013, it was the 1st leg, and the "New" album wasn't out yet, so he hadn't yet put those songs in the show.) Whatever.... 1st world problems!

Thoughts?
I last saw him in 2010 (Charlotte NC) and was not going to go because my wife and I saw him the previous year at Citifield. My daughters wanted to see him so how could I say no to sharing the experience of seeing him with my daughters. It was cool hearing "Venus And Mars/Rock Show" again (saw WOA tour) but was sad that he abbreviated it. Enjoyed that set list because I liked the "Fireman" songs for example although I would have love it if he included "Dance Til We're High". Anyway, his show is still wonderful for the first timers or you have seen him once before IMO. For me it is not worth a couple of hundred dollars a ticket for his current set list and I would probably roll my eyes during some of his repeated stories. Once again, I will sadly state it is a shame that he did not truly refresh his set list with wonderful songs of his almost 40 year solo career. I know I will never see him live again but still have many great memories and some pretty darn good pictures I took the last few times I saw him . Finally, I hope everybody has a great time at the shows but for me I am really looking forward to the new album.

_________________________________________ Yankeefan, If I have my facts correct, were you at the Citi Field show with Billy Joel joining Paul for "I Saw Her Standing There"? Looking at the Tour Archives on this Site in 2009, I forgot that I went to the Fed Ex Field Show outside of Washington DC that same summer. The setlist was basically the same that you got except we got "Michelle" at Fed Ex Field since Michelle Obama was the new First Lady. I have to say that I liked the 2010 Setlist in Philadelphia better since he did the Wings songs I had never heard like V&M/Rock Show, Letting Go, 1985 plus those mid-tempo Beatle songs he rotated in 2010 that were new for me. Loved all those songs. I had forgotten that I actually heard the last 4-5 last Beatle songs on my above list in 2009. At that point however they still sounded fresh so I liked the 2010 Setlist quite a bit. Just think if Paul would have put That Was Me and House of Wax on the 2009-2010 setlist liked he had done at the Paris show a little earlier. Again, I never understood why he didn't play great Solo songs like those and yet continued playing Let Me Roll It and a few others at every show. Like you, I have many great memories of the 9-10 shows I have seen. I also took my Daughter to the 2002 show and we had a fantastic time. She is also a fan (not as crazy as me thank God). Just a shame that Paul doesn't know a few of us here. He would certainly know that we love many of his Solo songs.

So many valid and accurate comments! Lots of good reading! I keep forgetting about Miami since I'm all systems go for Tampa! Miami will probably get "Birthday" AND "Yellow Submarine" he did both when I saw him on Ringo's birthday in Pittsburgh 2014. It's a strange situation. Sometimes it seems like lately, Paul just does the exact opposite of what he should. He ditches the songs he can sing, puts in the ones that he can't...and when a spot does open up...what does he throw in? Bottom of the barrel material like "I Wanna Be Your Man"! I hope we see things turn around soon. I think I'll stay off of here between Miami and Tampa and let myself hopefully be surprised by something...anything...at the show!
