What makes you smile?

@bruce-m YES! I am a former competitive gymnast and the flack she still gets from pulling out of the 2020 Olympics is terrible. Easy for "couch gymnasts" to say she should have toughed it out, but they just don't understand gymnasts can get terribly hurt if they are forced to push themselves when having the "twisties" especially at the elite level. They are real, trust me I know.
It's been wonderful to watch her compete the last several days. (and the rest of the gymnasts) especially today!

It's also a bit humbling to realize that I will never be nearly as good at anything as Simone Biles is in her chosen field. She has a couple more events to go and may still win more medals. Wait, did I say "may"??? WILL.

@bruce-m Same Bruce. While I got up super early last weekend to watch Gymnastics, I couldn't do it this morning, so I set the DVR to record the live coverage, so I'll watch that at some point today. I actually got into competing (I was already in gymnastics) because of Mary Lou Retton back in the day, so it's been fun to watch Simone light that spark again 40 years later!

Some of you here are old enough to remember the great Romanian gymnast, Nadia Comeneci. She defected to the U.S. in 1989 and she had some kind of elective surgery in our O.R. in the early â90s. She wasnât my patient, but I saw her in recovery. She is 62 years old now.

Nadia Comeneci
Yes, and she's married to Bart Connor who was another 1984 gymnastics gold medalists like Mary Lou. One of my gymnastics team coaches had trained with him way back when.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nadia_ComÄneciOMG, Nadia Comeneci is 62??? I still see her in my head as the 14 year old phenomenon. I also remember a hilarious SNL sketch (back when SNL was often funny, so clearly ancient days) about her and Olga Korbut, who had been the young gymnastics star 4 years earlier, and who lost to Komeneci at the 1976 Olympics.

You know what? I think I confused the two! It was Olga Korbut (who is 69 and born exactly 5 days after me) not Nadia Comeneci!
She lived in Georgia (U.S., not Russia) in the mid â90s!
From Wikipedia:In 1991, she and her family immigrated to the United States, because they were worried about the effects of fallout from the Chernobyl disaster on Belarus. They settled in New Jersey, where she taught gymnastics. They moved to Georgia two years later where she continued to coach.

@bruce-m P.S. Bruce, Nadia will be 63 in Nov. She was 15 during the 1976 Olympics, and Olga was 21. What makes me smile is that I saw Paul McCartney for the first time on May 18, 1976, a week after my 21st birthday!

Our recent trip to the British Isles and Amsterdam put many smiles on our faces. I was grinning like a little schoolboy in Liverpool when we visited some of the Beatle sites in the city.
