Paul McCartney 2013 Rumours

I can appreciate the iron willed optimism of some of you, but facts are facts. For McCartney to do the major overhaul of his show you all want, he will need more than a week of rehearsals with the band, which is what he has been doing for a few years now, then performing GREAT shows, but essentially the same show. If you can reach back into your memory, McCartney usually rehearses a new show in a big venue somewhere in London, so not only can new songs be practiced, but new staging and lighting. If all the rumors about Paul doing shows in South America in April are true, well guess what? This Friday is the beginning of March, and there has been NO WORD of the band rehearsing or anything like that. There may be stealth practices going on, I don't know. But all indications are the South American shows will be pretty much what we have seen and heard already. Or maybe not.
It was confirmed by Brian Ray that the November gigs were the last bunch of 'On The Run' shows. At the announcement he stated through Twitter this were the final US On The Run gigs, while on tour he posted "last On the Run show tonight". Now it is true there isn't any logic behind that. McCartney went through 4 tour names 2009-2012 with the exact same main set. McCartney can easily rehearse at his usual London space, the Music Bank in London - the one you see in those rehearsal videos on his YouTube-channel - in complete anonymity for weeks without any of us knowing anything. Those things aren't getting reported. Hell, they even rehearsed for the second leg of the Up & Coming Tour in 2010 at Hog Hill Mill Studios. When McCartney is not on tour we know nothing about his whereabouts. Sometimes he's at a gala in LA, and then you read a few days later that he was spotted at a Stella McCartney show in Paris, and the same week dining in New York... Only at the moment they are putting together the whole package - the rehearsed songs, the corresponding light show, video animations and the likes - they are hiring something like the O2 Arena, and it isn't until then people are giving reports about McCartney being spotted over here. You aren't using that location and all that crew trying to nail the vocal harmonies on the bridge of 'Silly Love Songs' in rehearsals. Besides that, both Rusty Anderson and Brian Ray stated in the past they would often rehearse new songs ('Come And Get It', 'Back Seat Of My Car', 'Junior's Farm', 'Lovely Rita', 'The Night Before') for about a week, after which McCartney only comes in after that period and picks out what he believes what works best ('Drive My Car', 'Get Back', 'Back In The USSR', 'I Saw Her Standing There'). The inside source who last December brought us the big news about McCartney putting together "a major tour [..] starting in April" - which is turning out to be the truth - stated the band would rehearse new material in January.
Well, ok then! I mean, I am not basing my life or future on this, it is a concert tour by a pop star. That's all. Frankly, I hope you are right. I have nothing to gain or lose, and I already said in my post Paul and Co. may be rehearsing without us knowing. Cool! So let's go with what you are saying, and Audi too. You are both saying Paul McCartney will unveil a completely new and "minty fresh" world tour in April. New set list and new staging. Ok. Let's see what happens!

Actually, I don't think the new show will surface until Bonnaroo. If he plays South America prior to that. it could could be a toss-up.

I got it. Made me chuckle.

I am not being negative, just commenting on what has happened in the recent past and what can be observed. I am aware of Brian and others saying the On The Run Tour is over, but that was said about the Up And Coming Tour, and we all know what happened. There are actual rumors for shows in South America and Poland and Sweden. And a real show announced for the USA in June. This is good! That Paul will do more shows in 2013 there is no doubt. Also, concerning the "debate" over whether it will be a "new" show or more of the same, what actually defines a new show? The stage set up will likely remain the same. So will the lights. New graphics can be expected. The set list is really the driving point. If Paul plays five songs he has never played live, or at least from before, say, 2002, is that a new show? Or will ten songs do it? Half the set? 75% of the set? Any ideas?

I'm bankin' on 75%. "Bout time. Look at the stark difference between Wings' '75/'76 setlist and their '79 setlist. That's what needs to happen in 2013.

No, same here. Don't get me wrong, like said, I'm not trying to argue about it. To be fair, my expectations at this point in his career are probably the same as yours. He's going to follow the same path as the last 3-4 years: announcing a few gigs at a time, build around what's convenient - for example randomly Antwerp, Rotterdam and Zurich just to justify the hassle for the Royal Albert Hall gig last year - mostly in regions he hasn't played for a long time, so no need for a major shake-up of the at that time current setlist, with the same 'set-up' (no grand intro movie or support act). Probably a few one-off smaller gigs when the album drops. But he's also now at the point that he can't go back to London for a O2 Arena gig and play the same basic set. Anyway, you get the point.

I wouldn't count on more than 5 new songs on the set. Of course I'd love lots of surprises, but I'm not that optimist.

It does happens a bit like that though
. All recent 'surprising' additions are songs who go as far back as repetitions from 2002-2005 - all named in interviews - and which Brian/Rusty/Abe Jr. really had to push and push for to finally see them being include in the regular set. (And then saw them go after 5 gigs). At this point the only song they kept on mentioning through the years which haven't saw the day of light yet is 'Back Seat Of My Car', as far as I remember. edit: Oh wait, and the earlier mentioned 'Lovely Rita' of course. But that's a bit scraping the barrel of the bottom now... He's really steadily giving every single of his Beatles-compositions airtime since 2002. No need to push for 'What's Your Doing' or 'Another Girl', that time will come. He could've done it in 2011, but then we were saying the same for 'The Night Before' or something now.

Also this. Depends on where he's playing though. I really can't see him playing the exact same songs (not counting the 10 warhorses) again in those countries. He never did that. Frankly, each time when he didn't at least changed 50% of the set there was something to say for. He simply didn't have to. "Haven't played that city/country for 5 years", "last time he played he had a different opener", "this is a one-off special show", etc. This time it could be different. And again, he did it before. 2002/2003 of course, but that was the start of something new. Again in 2004 for Europe, 2005 for the US. Then the one-offs in 2007/2008 slowly but surely shaped into the 2009 setlist, which was completely different compared to the one in 2004/2005. Then 2010, based on the same recipe from 2009, but in different regions. Brand new set for a lot of cities. Etc. And hell yes McCartney is aware of which setlist choices to make, that's no coincide. The Netherlands 2009? 'Magical Mystery Tour' opener. The Netherlands 2012? 'Hello, Goodbye'. Antwerp - 50 miles south - 4 days later? 'Venus And Mars'. And the latter had 'Drive My Car' in the encore (!), with 'Let 'Em In' added.
-
The setlist will never be complete until "Tropic Island Hum" is added.
-
Here is the set list I think McCartney should do, in no particular order: Teddy Boy Junk The Mess Dear Boy Back Seat Of My Car Tomorrow Wild Life Some People Never Know Big Barn Bed Little Lamb Dragonfly Helen Wheels Hi Hi Hi Love In Song Listen To What The Man Said Warm and Beautiful Silly Love Songs Café On The Left Bank Girls School London Town With A Little Luck Getting Closer Old Siam Sir Take It Away No More Lonely Nights What You?re Doing Lovely Rita Oh Darling Your Mother Should Know For No One Two Of Us

Some great choices, but unfortunately it's never gonna happen.

Good point, but thinking about this and Paul's so called rehearsal time will he actually make changes or at this current stage think I can't be bothered especially when I'm pushing 71. As I said in an earlier post the fans who have followed him since the year dot deserve something without a doubt.

Do you mean JUST these songs in the set? Because honestly, I would not be too pleased if that was the whole show. BUT, there are tons of great songs in there that would have a very comfy home in a realistically structured setlist.
-
I'll add that -- to me -- the ideal McCartney setlist must make it clear that the man is still a contemporary, current, relevant recording artist. At least 30% of his setlists should include relatively newer music.
-
How on earth could I include songs off his new CD without knowing what they are??? Yeah, add five new songs to the list.
-
I wish I'd never ever read Brian use the term, "minty fresh" with regards to a McCartney setlist...

Was it Brian or wasn't it used for the first time after the Horsens cancellation? Or is my mind fluffy?
