I wish TCM would spotlight films of Sophia Loren and Paul Newman. I read biographies of them just recently. Loren seemed to make one cinematic bomb after another, with few big hits, but managed to become an all time major movie star great anyway. Reading the plots of those movies described as failures, I rather understood, they didn't seem interesting. I wish she had chosen more wisely. Yet one person's trash is another person's treasure...I might see one of those on TCM and feel it was a success and not a big dud, you never know The Newman bio by Lawrence J. Quirk got in one dig at Newman after another...he wasn't very bright, was selfish, feared being a pretty boy would make people think he was gay, his wife could be a "B" and so on. Was a boozer who couldn't show emotion and affection to his loved ones and was a mindless sports (racing) nut. According to that guy. I loved Newman's "sensitive" works--"Rachel, Rachel" "Man in the Moon Marigolds" and "The Glass Menagerie" and certain movie portrayals and don't think he was as "limited" as that biographer depicted. Especially remembering all his vast charity endeavors, which continue after his demise.

Last week when Drew Barrymore was co-hosting, they showed Stanley Kubrick's 1962 psychological drama Lolita, about a middle-aged college professor who becomes infatuated with a 14-year-old nymphet. He becomes so obsessed with the girl he marries her mother just to be near her. He starts to plot ways to kill the mother, when she is conveniently killed in a car accident. He then gets his wish to be just with Lolita. She knows he is obsessed with her, and she strings him along, teasing and torturing his mind. All the while, Lolita is having a relationship with another older man, Clare Quilty, played brilliantly by Peter Sellers. You don't find this out until very late in the film, and there are other twists and turns along the way. It's funny and erotic, and just sick all the way around. I had never seen it, and it was fantastic! Have to check out some Elvis films today!

I loved seeing "Summertime" again with Katharine Hepburn and Rosanno Brazzi. Venice has never looked more gorgeous, as it was filmed in this movie, and seeing a middle aged love affair was nice. Currently reading Kate's auto biography "Me." Have read it before. Read a long biography on Audrey Hepburn, too, recently and enjoyed it. I felt I knew her pretty well by the end. She's an alltime fave of mine.

Great to once again see Life with Father - delightfully sweet! Tonight 8 PM EDT The Razor's Edge Tyrone Power, Gene Tierney, Anne Baxter and Clifton Webb

Thoroughly enjoyed seeing Pride of the Yankees this evening! Always thought Gary Cooper's portrayal of Lou Gehrig was one of his finest performances earning him an Oscar nomination. Teresa Wright is delightful in her touching performance in this role, also earning her an Oscar nomination. Wonderful to see Babe Ruth as himself! Poignantly moving film - wonderful!

Movies like those are perfect for a nice, cold night under a warm blanket and a cupboard full o' cocoa. Don't think I could sleep after two Hitchcock films back-to-back, though. And isn't Niagara a thriller, too. Yikes!
