The Professionals by Owen Laukkanen. EDIT: Finished this book and it was really good. Here's the summary: Four friends, recent college graduates, caught in a terrible job market, joke about turning to kidnapping to survive. And then, suddenly, it's no joke. For two years, the strategy they devise-quick, efficient, low risk-works like a charm. Until they kidnap the wrong man. Now two groups they've very much wanted to avoid are after them-the law, in the form of veteran state investigator Kirk Stevens and hotshot young FBI agent Carla Windermere, and an organized-crime outfit looking for payback. As they all crisscross the country in deadly pursuit and a series of increasingly explosive confrontations, each of them is ultimately forced to recognize the truth: The true professionals, cop or criminal, are those who are willing to sacrifice . . . everything. A finger-burning page-turner, filled with twists, surprises, and memorably complex characters, The Professionals marks the arrival of a remarkable new writer.

"Dearie" by Bob Spitz, who penned a very long comprehensive, absorbing Beatles bio and is now tackling Julia Child. (His Beatles book is much more exciting!) Enjoyed "Julie and Julia" movie with Meryl Streep and Amy Adams. I guess that's why I checked this out. It's another really long read from Spitz. I might just jump around perusing this one Talk about a lightweight read--"Pioneer Woman" account of her personal love story with her cattle rancher. I Sort of like her cooking show, although her culinary fare is too fat-filled and hearty and sugary. She's a likable redheaded gal whose writing zips right along and pokes fun at herself, and can be amusingly humorous. It's escapist reading she admits she modeled after romance novels albeit hers is non-fiction. Recently re-read A. Alvaraz's book about suicide. That's probably why I've resorted to much less harrowing non-challenging subjects lately.
