what do you think of Dogs

I am a dog person and I have had three dogs in my life. They are great pets and they become part of the family. The last dog I had died several years ago at the age of 16, I was very suprised he lived that long since "Sonny" was a big dog Australian Shepard/Bernese Mountain mix. We got him from my oldest daughters 6th grade teacher who was moving from Charlotte NC to Rhode Island and asked the class if anybody wanted to watch/take care of "Sonny" for 6 months until their house was built. My daughter asked my wife if we could have him and she said it is up to your Father -lol. Of course, I said yes but warned everyone that we would probably get attached to him and it would be tough when he had to go back to his owner. "Sonny" was a gentle giant (great with children), great watchdog and we just loved him to death, he was quite a handsome dog also. When we got him, there was a two page list of commands that he would respond to when told, he was trained very well when we got him. Yes, we all loved him and then that dreaded day came when my daughter's teacher called us about "Sonny". He said to my wife if you have grown attached to him you can keep him, if not he would pick him up in a few weeks. We screamed with delight and said we would love to keep him !! Neat thing was the Sonny's original family came and visted him a couple of times which was very cool.
When he got old, my wife would tell "Sonny" that she could never "put him down" and wanted him to make the decision. Sadly one evening we came back from dinner and found that "Sonny" had died. Even in death, he honored my wife's request . I am not a man who cries often but have no problem saying I shed tears that night, I loved my big "puppy" so much. I said then that I would never have another dog because "Sonny" IMO was perfection.
So on a happier note, I love it when I see dogs and ask owners if I can pet them. I think they are great animals!!!
What a touching story! I'm not a dog person, maybe because when I was 10 I got bit on the thigh by my friend's German Shepherd (a dog I had been around before!) and the only time I had a dog was when my 2nd husband brought home a stray gorgeous female English Setter. This was taken when she was much older. She ended up with a tumor and we euthanized her when she was about 12.

I'm a dog person. Only had two in my life but they brought me great joy, and the main reason I haven't had another is that their deaths were so traumatic. The first was a German shephard my family got when I was about 11. If I was home sick from school he would just park by my bedroom door and keep an eye on me all day. Less fun was the night he came trotting into the house holding a live (and very unhappy) skunk he'd found in our back yard...

I doubt that I'll ever be without a dog. They give you so much love. I've had a few pretty rough years & my dog has made me smile every day with his antics. I adopted him 8 years ago from Carolina Coonhound Rescue in South Carolina & had him transported to Illinois. He was already 2 years old. I will always get adult dogs since everyone wants the young pups. There are sooo many dogs in shelters that need help.

Nancy - Love the picture of your dog. If I could figure out how to post pictures on this site, I would include a couple of good ones of "Sonny".

Thanks! We had her from the late '80s until about 2001. All the other photos I have were from old film cameras!

I've been looking for man with that same dog like personality, that would be perfect LOL Now how can I carefully word that on my dating page...

"Sonny" loved the rare time it snowed in Charlotte and I love this picture of him.

When we went away we used to have "Sonny" boarded at a great place for dogs which he really liked. After you had your dog boarded there a certain amount of days, they took picture of your dog and put it on wall in the "Dog Hall Of Fame" -lol.

Here's my guy. Not quite as hairy as yours. Adopted bluetick coonhound.

OOBU24 - Love the picture of your dog !! To be honest, I never heard of that type of dog before. BTW - I just did a free trial of "Photobucket" so I could show the things that mean the most to me in life, my family and my dog -lol. If you want , check out pictures of my daughters on the "Grandkids,Kids" thread. I may be adding shots of Paul I took at some concerts years ago in the near future.

^ I'm surprised that you never heard of a coonhound. They use them for hunting up & down the east coast & in the south. My guy is from South Carolina...Carolina Coonhound Rescue. Hunters just let them go (if they're lucky) if they don't hunt. They are used for racoons, bears, cougars, wild pigs. Glad mine was gun shy!

I guess it is even funnier since I have lived in Charlotte NC for 32 years. I guess my knowledge of dog breeds is pretty basic, never heard of Bernese Mountain Dog until we got Sonny many years ago.

I;m on my 2nd coonhound. I love the breed & there are so many in shelters.

That's a great shot!

As a breed, we love mini-schnauzers. We have two retired mothers. Four litters each. They are both smart but in different ways. Opposite personalities. They are best friends.
My Photo Bucket account got hacked years ago, so I can't post photos of them.
